4/26/2018 – After arriving at the Rangers Guild Hall, Shamino sent the rangers to Jhelom to speak to Rufus, the elusive master of the Hand of Death, a fighting school in Jhelom. The reason, Shamino explained, was the Hand of Death banner found in the mountain fortress that the rangers had assaulted in their search for the Assassin of Vesper. The Assassin seemed to be associated with the Hand of Death and Shamino wished to learn more.

Upon arriving at the Hand of Death hall they were greeted by a rude student named Skinner. The rangers attempted to learn the whereabouts of Rufus from Skinner but the student was reluctant to say. He did suggest that if they took care of a small problem he would be willing to give them some information. The task was to find a lowlife named Conway that had been badmouthing the Hand of Death during his drunken rants, and wanted the group to teach him a lesson. The rangers agreed to check out the situation and traveled to the Horse’s Head tavern.

At the tavern, they found Conway stooped over the bar mid-drink, but as soon as they brought up his issues with the Hand of Death he smashed a bottle on the head of one of the men at the bar and started a rowdy bar fight. Despite the chaos the rangers were able to subdue the drunk. He desperately begged them to spare him, and said if they would just return to Skinner and lie about beating him up, he would leave Jhelom forever and promised not to say anything about the Hand of Death again. Seeing an opportunity to avoid needless violence, the rangers agreed. Upon returning to Skinner with an apology written by the hand of Conway, he expressed satisfaction with the result and told them that Rufus was meeting with a group of pirates in an attempt to make some kind of deal. The meeting, Skinner said, was occurring on the nearby peninsula on the mainland.

The rangers found themselves among a group of sketchy-looking pirates in no time, and confronted by the second-in-command, First Mate Skelly. Not seeing Rufus, the rangers demanded to know where he was, and Skelly claimed that Rufus and the Captain had went somewhere private to meet. He then ordered his pirates to take down the intruders, igniting the tension and causing the bloodthirsty crew to descend upon the rangers. When the sand had settled First Mate Skelly had fled and only a single pirate remained who came running out of the tent claiming to be a friend.

The pirate, who called himself Keith, said he not a real pirate but an agent for the Brothers in Arms, a rival school in Jhelom. They went back to Jhelom and to the Brothers in Arms hall where Keith explained that he was attempting to figure out what Rufus was up to, as lately the Hand of Death had been involved in fixing fights with a group of pirates that had been taken down, and now Rufus was looking for a new band of pirates to do some of his dirty work. Keith had wanted to watch the deal go down but was thwarted when Rufus and the pirate captain decided to head to a private area to do their negotiation.

Keith advised the rangers to return home, and that he would be on the lookout for Rufus’ ship. As soon as he would see it, he said, he would send word to the Rangers Guild and then work out a plan to intercept the elusive guild master.
