downloading/updating uo on a computer

my laptop fried last night, but i have an older version which on this computer, so I am trying to update with patches...and it is taking forrrrrrrrrever

is this what would happen if i went to a new computer with no prior version

anyone have any advice, or am i stuck using 20th century technology?
