Oh wow! Draconi! Hi.Off.
The main reasons are:
* Short and repetitive tracks
* Broken sound system in 2D client messes up playback times (turning on/off/transitioning)
* LBR expansion replaced many beautiful tracks with crud
* Loss of the original themes to U9 themes
* Generic music (SE, ML)
About the only tracks I really like are the original ones and the various interpretations from Michael Gluck.
It's really a pity that no one's taken the original UO themes in MIDI and given them the full treatment. Not orchestral - that wouldn't be very Ultima, but some good, compelling pieces derived from the originals with good instrument samples.
I'm with you on the Michael Gluck tracks. I think all four (?) of them are beautiful; I wish they'd get him to do more stuff. Also, harpsichord.
If they ever do a classic shard - I'm one of the skeptics, but I won't completely discount it - it would be nice if they had all the pre-LBR stuff redone with real instrumental samples. (Like the Walking track, with the lute (?) rendition of Stones at the end. It's one of my favourite pieces still remaining in the game.) I came in at AOS and would never have known about the old tracks if it hadn't been for the remix archive linked a little way downthread.
What would be especially awesome would be if they used only the instruments available for the time period! That would be the coolest thing ever. All flutes and lutes and harps and harpsichords. I mean, I have nothing against pianos and violins, but. Harpsichords. Whoa.
A bunch of UO players ought to get together and do a complete musical re-interpretation of all the old tracks! With real instruments! I'd totally do it. Or the dev team should have a competition to see who can make the most polished reworkings of the old songs to put into the game; that would be hilarious.
Sorry, I'm still talking like you're a developer. I can't help it, you were always one of my favourites. Forgive me.
