DEVS - Universally saveable desktops and macros

Hello Devs,

With the advent of ever larger harddrive capacity, it would be really nice to see an option of saving macros and desktop layout to the server and then you can opt to download it at any time to the computer you're on when logging on a specific character.

This would save the layout of icons, skill icons, gumps and all macros set up for both EC and 2D client per character.

This would allow each player to set up their character perfectly just once, instead of having to set up every machine separately and copying over manually, which would then have to be updated back and forth every time you make a change to one UO installation.

Would also be very handy when you're for instance playing at another place than normal (a friends installation for instance), your harddrive crashed and you have to reinstall UO or you just reinstall your OS for other reasons and didn't get to save your desktop directory.

Simply make a button ingame that says "Save desktop layout and macros" and once you click that it saves it all, and then have another button that says "Restore desktop layout and macros" and it downloads the copy you have saved on the server.

Please consider this, it would be a great change for the game for both clients.

OK lets say you have upgraded to the 7th char slot and there is 30 shards(7) + SP(1) + Mugen(1) + TC(7) so you want EA to save 219 settings for CC and 219 settings for EC. 438 per account and lets say 50K accounts would be 21,900,000 different settings to be saved. NAH

Buy a Flash drive and backup your own settings at your house. They are cheap enough and guess what, you can take it to your friends house too.

Thats provided that every account has characters that actually save their desktops and macros on every server out there, thats highly unlikely. And even more unlikely that they'd have settings for both 2D and EC. In all likelihood you'd only have a small number of saved information.

While it would require some storage, its certainly doable with todays hardware.

While this could be done on a flash drive in a very roundabout way, having to spend 20+ dollars per player on flash drives = over ½ to a million dollars is silly. Its also very inconvenient (you have to manually copy your settings every time you make changes) and most players don't even know where the settings are.

Do other games do this? or do they all, as UO does, expect the player to take responsibility for saving his own personal settings?
At current time my desktop is backed up on my hubby's pc and his desktop is backed up on mine.

All the MMOs I played saves your desktop layout on the server, not the client. Heck, when I go to a friends version of the MMO and play my characters, it uses my layout.

Heck, many players don't even know where its saved and it becomes a huge hassle when you're switching machines a lot. I move between 10 different UO installations during a week and having to copy back and forth every time I make a change would be a huge annoyance. Plus bad if you forget to do it.

It also means that if you for instance play with someone far away (like in another country), then you're basically screwed unless you email your settings back and forth if you want to use common settings.

Not to mention you're lost if you forgot your USB drive and you're in another place.

This would be a somewhat easy feature to implement that would help a lot of players and make the game so much more enjoyable.

I played wow for some years and it was very nice that hotbars etc. was saved on the server... addons however you still needed to manage on each different pc so its not like its total hassle free to switch pcs in other mmos.

I find it funny how you come up with your scenarios thou... 1 day you have 8 accounts you can affort upgrading to SA and the next day you fly arround the world playing UO with ppl in other countries.... hehe

At least a usefull and relevant topic! :thumbup1:

Eh, what the hell? The 8 account was someone else.

I personally have 10 accounts (shared between me, my wife and sometimes my gf), out of those 3 of them are upgraded to SA. Its been no secret and I've had those accounts for many many years. (some of them from birth of UO, the rest are from the AOS expansion)

My wife is currently in the states and as such cannot use any changes I make to any of our characters and visa versa. The problem becomes even more complex when both of us play on multiple different machines in different locations.

This would NEVER work for me - I play on a desktop PC and a laptop, and the two screen resolutions would never allow it.

In fact, there have been times where I've had one set of data corrupted, and if I have to move the desktop settings over to the laptop, it moves most of the icons off-screen. so far that I can't recover them, and have to replace them manually. And, it's almost as bad with the EC trying to get it straightened out if you copy the desktop over.

Another reason for sticking to CC ... I play that at 1024x768 (yes I alter the screen resolution each time), but desktop settings transfer very nicely between systems.

I like the idea of server-side saves, but really would prefer it to be "backup" ... let the user be responsible for their stuff.

Other MMO's I've played saved the settings to their server. UO is the only one I've played that does not. I really wish UO would save to the server too. And I do keep backups of my own (painfully learned from UOAssist issues way back when).

And many players, especially new players aren't told this. So the day they lose their settings, they have to redo everything from the bottom.

They really should add this.

Its easy to post when you have access to internet and a browser anywhere and at any time. And I spend a lot of time in OT:NHB, which does tend to give one huge post counts.

My total post count is nearing 50.000 posts soon.
