Devs: Bring back sparing!!

Hello,

I havent trained a fighting skill in many years. I just recently upgraded to a 7th char and decided to remake a fencer. I know I can go beat on a golem and gain skills easy. But I would like to see sparring come back. It would be nice to interact with other players with gaining a skill. In the past I made many good friends while sparring, many I am still friends with today, after many years. Please bring guild sparring back, let us interact with training again. To many things these days are done alone.

Thanks Tom.

I had a lot of good times on Sonoma, training at the YMCA.
I second the motion. Bring back sparing.

There is nothing preventing you from sparring. Except the actual work involved when you do it. Healing, repairing armor, not being AFK, etc.

Aside form the fact you don't gain sparring.... And if you do its not consistant enough to train a melee skill up.

Sparring was a lot of fun back in the day when you could actually GM a skill doing it. Only problem is that there are people that will abuse it by afk macroing. But really whats the diff? People abuse every aspect of the game they can now anyway. Save for the remaining few that still do things legit just for the satisfaction of the accomplishment and knowing they are not a lazy ass cheater.

So i agree... Bring back sparring.

Are you sure about that? Keeping in mind that your opponent needs to be within 20 skill above or below for you to gain.

I think it's sad that most players seem to think training equals golems, shadow eles, satyrs and so on. And that the devs have all but encouraged them to do so, rather than look at why folks use those methods and address the deficiencies in the skill gain system.

Sparring was a lot of fun, I also do dungeon crawling for gains too. I haven't owned a golem in my UO life and don't plan to. But I think folks like you are rarer every day in UO, now the golem has become such a fixture. I don't think it's helped the community in our game, but I realise that few players would really know what they were missing in that respect.

The problem with sparring was that people were sparring AFK for skill gains. So they nerfed that and gave us golems instead. That obviously hasn't deterred AFK macroing.

Bring back sparring, and turn off the golems for skill gain.

Well said Wenchy! I never sparred AFK, but always enjoyed the conversation with my sparring mates. And if you had a few groups going it was nothing but good times. The "Opps missed that Band-Aid..." joke was always funny. I would much rather spar, gain and get to know other living people then use a golem or the other "easy" ways of gaining. People have always and will always look for the loopholes in the system and frankly I don't care. I am a little tired of the majority having to suffer for the actions of the few.

(My opinion of course.)

I agree with Tom_Builder - bring sparring back!

I'm sure. I just tried it with a friend. We both started new chars with the same skills; 50 healing and 50 poison. Got to 25 fencing and stopped dead there. We tried it in the courtyard of my fel castle, just incase it didnt work in tram.

If anything golems increased AFK macroing, just go to Luna and try to talk to one of the people there. Then again maybe they just dont like me!

And you know why that is??

Because theres nothing to engage them while training!!!No people to talk to, no nuthing. If 2chars where there the chances are they wouldnt be afk.

So give you what you want and take away what the other guy likes.

I'm not so sure that's not greedy on your part.

No wait, it is.
I dont care if golems stay. It might be easier for people to use them if they cant find a friend or guildmate to train with. Or even during off hours, when not as many people play. But let us have the option to train with a friend if we want. I think sitting there and beating up a golem is one of the most boring things in the game. Almost as bad as training taming. With a live person, you can interact, learn who the people are who play beside you. Make friends who you can trust and enjoy this wonderful world of UO with.

Devs; please consider this.

Yeah they were some of the best I remember. I spent hours there with Kron, Thumper, Sparkles, and all the other N*B guild. I think Kron invented the "opps I miss joke". Funny thing is I dont think I was AFK for even one minute during all those hours. I miss Minoc being packed too. Damn, so much has changed over the years. Makes me sad.

Back in the old days, you didn't need to be within 20 skill points of each other to gain.

In fact you could passively gain a skill by doing nothing other than standing next to someone.

I don't like other people (If you can't tell.) and treat other players as really annoying NPCs.

I like my "Not having to interact with others" options available to me.

That was one packed Minoc bank area I can honestly say. Be tough to even find a place to lean on next to the bank back then. Grass be packed, people all over, sure were fun times & like you said. You got to talk to your fellow players & learn, many if not all, were not that bad once you got to chatting. Here you be talking to a person you thought was a kid & it would be a 40 yr old Pk'ng maniac :hahaha:. If the Dev's want to leave in the golems in, thats fine. Some times it is tough to find one to spar with, BUT give us that option to spar with each other. It was a ball :sword:.

I guess the greedy part is that I want to make this a better game so players don't want or have to macro AFK. I am sorry if this spoils your play style.

If anything golems increased AFK macroing, just go to Luna and try to talk to one of the people there. Then again maybe they just dont like me!
That's my point exactly! Golems were nerfed so badly that they couldn't be used for anything else but macroing skill gains.

If you don't want to interact with other players, there's nothing stopping you from training on monsters or NPC fighters.

That is true. But the same is true with golems now. With a golem you dont even have to heal. I know everything before wasnt perfect.

But we did have one thing that the game is lacking now. Player interaction. Dont get me worng, we all hang out with friends, but we rarely make new ones. People are more likely to pass by you now without even a "Hail" then before.

There are many things that we have lost over the years, the bone wall in decent, the over land spawns like the one above the mines north of Minoc. The dungeon crawls in Shame, plus so many others that slip my mind (old age). I recently took the time to visit some of the old dungeons, I didnt see one other person. Shame was dead, Wind (one of my favorites) was emtpy, there were two people in destard (working alone, one say Hello back, the other called out as I walked up "I dont need help, go find your own").

So if we can bring back anything that will make us interact again, then it should be done.
I dont need more items, I have so much now that even if I lost a mil in items everyday, I could still play for 2 years or more. And I'm poor compaired to some. I would trade it all to see all the cities and dungeons full of people talking, laughing and joking around.

I was mostly commenting on the fellow who said he'd like to see golems and other things of that nature removed.

May as well turn on the TC code for skill adjustments for warriors, and save your play time over beating a golem.

Set Swords=1200

Like I stated in the first line, I dont care about golems one way or the other. By the way, were you in destard earlier? If not you should stop by, your twin is there!!

You should try it outside of a house. There is supposed to be code in place which prevents you from training weapon skills inside a house but it doesn't always work correctly. It might be in this case.

I heard about that, that is why I used the courtyard. I guess that could still be considered inside. I will test it out front and repost on what I find. Hope it is that simple.
