Dev-Team: Castles any chance ?

i have said many times and will say again here

keep the castles the same above ground

but pls make a single storey 31x31 customisable basement, so it does not impact on other houses, castle do not become 4 storey borg cubes

and it give owners the chance to be creative

that is what i would love to see!

The last time this was requested, the Dev's gave a semi-logical reason why this cannot happen.

when you say semi-logical do you mean real logic or UO logic?

As a non-castle owner i would love to see marble ,sandstone light grey dark grey and stone blue castle and keeps would really make it look great not having the same castl all over the place

This is a great suggestion. It would avoid all of the problems while still granting the owners a degree of personalization.

Ya know the more I think about this the more I am inclined to think they should totally remove the castle, bump the storage in keep to that of a castle and match the tower storage with a keep and so on and so forth. The castle really is a monstrosity and it's obvious that those who own them don't particularly like them. Just a thought.

If a keep had the same storage, I would dump my castle for it. I have three max storage customizeable houses, and a castle. I have done 0 deco and custimization in the storage houses. The only one i really use other than to store stuff is the castle.

Of my fondest memories of UO related to housing:

1. My first 8x8 after tram opened up.
2. My first mage tower bought by lots of scrimping and saving
3. AoS... custom housing
4. Logging in to see the castle in front of my house had fallen... franticaly buying a placement tool, taking the mil off my vendor, and finally placing that monstrosity.

Now I am all for customizable castle plots.... I would be consumed night and day for months on end putting it all together. But as posted before the devs have explained the change would not be easy. So no need to waste time right now on something that would impact so few. I was happy they even looked into it in the first place.

Mine was the day I had 5 houses, on same screen, same account on Moonglow island. They were all smalls, but in the day, that was doing GOOD :)

They could even put that "basement" on another server...only way to access it is by a teleport from one spot in the castle. They could add basements for other houses too...

And yet, as programming experience and technology changes, so do the opinions of the DevTeams too.

Heck, Necromancy became a dead horse for years... until they implemented it.

Personally, I'd love to have about a month with the custom housing code... I'm pretty sure it could be convinced to do custom housing with abnormal plots (ie: L-shape, keep, and castle) without too much effort.

I understand the desire to have custom keeps and castles... after all, if you look at the floorplans, they both have some very wasted space and bizarre iterations to them. They were not well planned (then again, neither was the large mable with patio, given that it's such a beautiful display of marble... with a ladder to the roof... :/).

I don't think there's anything wrong with hoping for a change someday. And at very least, it would be nice to see maybe four or five designs for castles and keeps that are static -- perhaps with courtyards in various spots on the castles so that placing them in areas might become more possible dependant upon the overlap of the courtyard.

Well, tonight I scored a Keep to go along with the Castle. Yes, I want teleporters and to be able to change wall styles. And I can't get the ladders to work on the keep to the corners. Is there a bug or known issue with that?

Basements or dungeon levels to housing is something that I feel should have been put in long time ago....

They could go on their own special server... every house owner could get a 32x32 "basement"... Could have some form of "trapdoor" teleporter that places in your home... using the housing menu.

I think it should cost though...

I also think you could be allowed to choose say between 12x12 for say 100k 18x18 for 500x and a 32x32 for 5million... Then customization would be from a special Dungeon level design tool... the plot would have "dungeon" walls around the outside... you can chose to keep that or turn them to "cavern" walls... then the interior is yours to design... the interior walls and things you could have added "dungon" walls and cavern walls along with the current wall sets.

Also there is no adding of teleporters to the upper floors... only one exit can exist but you can have teleporters from one side to the other...

I don't see anything wrong with adding dungeons/basements to all houses.

Each basement/dungeon would add 2k to 4k of lockdowns/storage..... so if you have a 7x7 above ground you could have a 32x32 underground.... with 4k of lockdowns below ground.

But I still would like to see some variations of the castle design....

And the copout of some castles having "blocking" items in the courtyard..... I seem to recall a few years back they removed a bunch of vegetation that was "encroaching" on properties... this I know because a large Yew tree was removed from beside one of my homes.. sadly... but it allowed me to gain 3 tiles... They could once again remove all vegetation that is blocking.... and take all that out of castle courtyards... and give all castles and keeps a REAL base.... either 24x24 or 32x32... that can be customized.

Bleh... basements... Where does it stop? "I don't have enough room in my basement, now I need a sub-basement." I think this just opens up a whole new level of silliness... and it would require a lot of reprogramming.

Bleh... I definitely don't want them to run around removing vegetation. The Yew thing was part of the adjustment of that area because of the swamp that appeared and then later disappeared. They took the opportunity to free up some space, and this was good.

For them to start removing vegetation from existing castles, well, you know, if they got rid of the entire forest behind me, I could put a castle there too... Heck, I only need them to take out about five rows of trees. And you better believe if they start removing statics from the game for one castle owner, they might as well just put in a whole flat green acres for the world, because you know, trees and stuff are inconvenient.


What I will say about this is that I would fully support a 24x24 plot and a 31x31 plot, both customizable, with the following limitation: It can't exceed 2 stories.

Now, if you have a castle or keep that is placed over landscape such as trees, tough. Move your castle or keep. No removing statics for anyone's convenience. Leave the game world as it is.

But if you can place the large-sized plots, go for it... and then you can customize, up to two stories... no three story monstrosities.

And actually, I'm thinking maybe they could do 20x20, 22x22, 24x24, 26x26, 28x28 and 30x30, or maybe just 20, 22, 26, and 30... all square bases, none of this silly shape like an 18x30... let's keep it simple on anything over 18x18, and anything over 18x18 gets no more than 2 stories to them. (If the upper limit becomes 30x30, a castle should still be "convertable" to this through the menu, it would simply lose 1 square (east or west, who cares?) and the stairs in would be the 31st row at the front).

This would (1) allow customization of large plots, and (2) help prevent the lag issue that would potentially arise from a 31x31 three story ogre.

As for the usual argument of "they'll make horrible designs," well, yeah, some will. Custom housing is still an awesome thing, there ARE some great houses out there, and, well, you don't have to live inside it. I've got some garish neighbors, I've got some awesome neighbors. To each their own.
