I kinda like this idea... I wonder if a military address falls under the RoC. We have several folk that deploy regularly. Small gifts from "the boardies" might go a long way in keeping spirits high.

Good luck and keep that head on a swivel... *salutes*

Aye please check into that kelmo. I know 2 outta 5 of my deployments i never recieved any type of gift package and for those that dont know you are cut off from your family and friends except thru the internet and thats if the base your at even has internet or phones. Every little piece of mail no matter how insignificant is greatly appreciated over there.

Our thoughts are with you!

We can't really post them on the public board. More than just those who post it read that, but I'll try to work something out.

The RoC states the following:

F. Participant shall not post messages containing personal phone numbers or addresses.
This section used to be worded differently. As it read before, posting phone numbers and/or addresses of others was prohibited. That, I can most definitely understand, but if someone, such as someone in Asty's situation wanted to post their address, or in this case, their military address and did so themselves, why would Stratics have a problem with that?

Alternatively, Asty could just give the address to Vaelix or another guildmate and let the community know who has the information. Players interested in corresponding or sending care packages could request the information from the designated guildmate.

Another option would be to post it to the Stonehaven Public Forum. [See link below my sig]

Just some ideas.

Are military addresses freely available elsewhere on the net?
My thoughts are, not everyone who reads this board is known to us.
Not everyone who can find this board is even a uo player.
Given the address of a military unit in Afghanistan, suppose someone sent a 'gift package' with less than friendly intentions?

Excellent idea. I also wonder how we could arrange something like this? I've sent things to one of those "adopt a soldier" type of organizations before, but the way it worked, they just posted lists of deployed personnel basic wish lists for things and you purchase something that is on the list and then send it to the organization, which handles creating care packages and sending them to the deployed military personnel based on the requests. In that case, you don't know where your gift will go, which wouldn't suit the specific intent in this case of getting supplies and such to UO players who are deployed, from UO players.

I have no idea, but you do bring up a good point. The possibility of that address falling into the hands of someone with less than friendly intentions, however remote that may be, is not worth risking. I think if he wants to, he could leave the address with a guildmate or two. Players who are interested can make contact with them and go from there. Better safe than sorry.

I remember them packages from the adopt a soldier program from my last deployment. They usualy consisted of the same basic needs that are usualy sold out in the px. Our unit always seemed to get enough for 2 packages per soldier in bulk. It was so great to get the stuff and most the packages also came with the address of a child to be a penpal with. I tried to write back to all the kids at least once. You would be amazed how "cool" these kids think it is when a military person sends them a letter. I got one that wrote back saying she took the letter to school for show and tell. I thought it was neat! Anyways i called my old unit commander and he said that posting the address in a public place would be a bad idea due to the fact that not only could us every day people get said address but so could not so nice people. Best bet in this situation would be to get the address off a friend of him.

Oh also there is a program called cell phones for soldiers where you hand in your old cellphones you dont use anymore. In some cases and in some countries there are ways to get them activated overseas to call home on. I had a girl in my unit that got sent a blackberry and reactivated it online and was able to talk to her parents and kids for a very very expensive monthly bill lol

Id say be safe... but as someone who used to do what you do, lets face it, you will be just fine.
I know your not heading to the "deed" but i'm sure you will fine just so long as your wear plenty of sunscreen when your at the pool, and if your allergic to shellfish, for god sakes don't eat the lobster.

Come back and buy me a present with all that desert money you get.

Have fun bro.
