Demolished House Lost Items Complaint

Hi,

I am posting this because I was directed by a GM to submit feedback via UO Herald. Unfortunatley that doesn't work.

I have a huge complaint. I am a veteran of this game and have played since 1999. I have been away from UO for approx 2 years. I have been back about a week.

I placed a new home today and went back to my old home to remove the items. When I clicked on "Demolish House", the message stated that all my items would be freely lootable by anyone who came by... This was fine by me as I was off in the woods and figured the risk was low, also, this would be much faster than typing "I wish to release this" on every object, box and item in the house.

Well I clicked OK and my house fell. Unfortunately all my items on the upper floors were left floating in the air and I could not reach them. I immediatley paged a GM who refused to help me and said to submit feeback to UO Herald (Which didn't work, I got an error message).

I have now lost many high end items that I will never be able to replace. Items I have spent years acquiring.

Thanks for ruining my return to UO. I now remember why I closed my account in the first place and I don't have any motivation to continue now that I have lost all these items so quickly due to a silly bug/house issue that GMs even refuse to help with.

Dev's. Perhaps if this happens, you should change the message to "When you demolish your house, all your items will be left floating in the air and you will lose them forever" since this is exactly what happens. I don't see how that would be so hard to do. Had I read that, I would have simply removed everything by hand first.

I feel that from the message before demolishing, I was lied to. I recieved no help from the GM. The feeback system doesn't even work and would basically be useless at this point even if it did work. My return to UO experience has been ruined. For a game with a declining population, I would have thought that simple things like this would be fixed already. If not, just change the message to explain exactly what will happen. That would be simple. It's just changing some text! Somehow I doubt I'm the first player that this has happened to. For a Dev team that says they want to fix bugs, if you're not going to fix this one, at least take the 1 minute to change a line of text and clarify what happens to items.

Thanks for nothing. End of my rant.

While annoying, with a bit of trial and error, you can actually reach items left floating in the air. Essentailly you just stand directly under the item in question, then take a couple steps south-east. You should be able to pull it down then.

I'm sorry you're upset, but this whole thing could have been prevented simply by taking the time to even just make a release macro and moving your items safely.

If you demo your house, there is a good chance that all deco items that started off in deed form will just disapear. The easiest way to clean out a full customizable house is to recustomize it and just fill all floor tiles with walls so that all tiles are taken and all your stuff will go to moving crate> then you can redeco and clear the exsisting design and start with just a plot and relocate moving crate and grab a few packies and move.

I do have sympathy for your losses, I really do.

But if you have played for the amount of time that you claim, and you are a "vet" (whatever that means today? I mean, aren't ALL the people left playing "vets"?), shouldn't you have KNOWN what you were getting yourself into?

I suspect that by taking the shortcut that you took, i.e. demo-ing the house versus packing your stuff up, that you were more interested in saving time than actually protecting the items that you now claim as rare and irreplacable...

Having one of the large museum in all of Ultima for years, I can promise you that I would never have done this, no matter HOW SECLUDED I believe my house was....

Now, again, I am sorry this happened, but I believe that the "writing was on the wall" when you made the decision to drop your house.

Does UO need to fix the "floating items", absolutely, sorry that you had to find out the hard way.

I know "I should have known" and remembered very quickly... but I guess after being away for a couple years, I have forgotten a couple things....

I shouldn't "have to know" about silly bugs. Thanks for the input and help everyone. At least we have a great community of players here....

You can also attempt to place a house in the spot and then everything will go under the house sign.

Of course, creating a macro with 'i with to release this' and just pressing the F4 key and targetting seems pretty easy to me.

Axe for the deeded items.

I would never just drop a house and expect to get all the stuff back but that is just me and I haven't played since 99.

And yes - every IDOCer knows how to get 'floating' items. You need to understand the Z axis and stand at the bottom of the Z axis or what looks like 3 tiles diagonal down from the item.

The items are long gone now...

I have to wait to place another house since I just placed the new one earlier today before demolishing the old one...

The items are gone. They weren't the most valuable I have but some of them were hard to acquire and it would take me a great deal of time to replace them and great expense.

Again, I appreciate everyones feedback. I should have known better but this issue should have been fixed years ago.

I did try grabbing the items from every square around them. I guess I wasn't standing in the right spot.

IMO I don't feel sorry for you. As a vet player you know better that if you demolish your house with your things still in them there is a chance they would either get lost, stolen or in your case stuck in the air no matter where you are in game. Secondly if those items were sooooooooo important why did you not make your house private, remove those items first to take to your place? The whole I wish to release this could have been made as a macro. Don't blame or ask help for your lazy mistake. Sorry...:stretcher:

GM's never help much... you can expect 9 times out of 10 to receive the usual canned comment about the website.

As for demolishing your house no amount of laziness can be that bad.

I can pack a room in under 5 min... with teleporters and beetles and pack animals and magery you can have yourself totally moved in under an hour...

I think you can chalk that up to lesson learned.

Sorry for your loss.

It's all the players like you that keep everyone (myself included) coming back to and playing the game. We have a great community here.

I have shrugged off the loss at this point. It's never worth stressing about things beyond our control for too long in life (Real or In Game).

I'm always happy to meet new friends in game, goodness knows most of the players I knew have moved on.

I play on the Atlantic Shard. My ICQ is 552460089, if anyone would like to add me, I'd be happy to meet up and go out hunting, do some pvping or whatever else in game. I'm always up for anything.

Thanks everyone,

I believe that most people posting here do have SOME sympathy for the player losing items. Everyone has lost something in this game at some point, but to say that we lack compassion is just plain wrong. Keep in mind that the OP knew there was consequenses for his actions because he even referenced the WARNING given prior to doing it. However, the OP decided it was best to take the lazy way out versus the "safer" method of unsecuring items and properly moving them. Then he has the nerve to post to stratics and blame UO for his lose when the problem was that he chose to take the easy way out and paid a price for it. Also.. if the OP is truly a "vet" player then he would have known how to get items that remained floating on the second floor. I would say next time to not take shortcuts and then don't blame others for problems created by your attempting to take the easy way out.

Gamemaster's job is resolving this situation by dropping the items down to ground level.

Whether they have the tools to do that .. or know that it is part of their job .. it is.

other games would at least say screw you or your mentally insane or something but uo just redirects you to a site that is barely operable lol.

WoW gives you your **** back in the equivalent situation, and worse.

You can strip your character naked, delete your items, and page back a day later and ask for it to be returned, and it will be. Such is the customer service of the leader.

(they won't do restorations like that 100x but yeah. For a real honest customer who made a mistake? heck yeah).

Well you could have set up a macro to say "I wish to release this" or you could have gone here UO Stratics *New* | UOHomeOwner and downloaded this or you could have just used the CTRL+Q key combo.

For someone that has played as long as you, you sure took the lazy mans way out. The problem that you described has been in UO for a very long time so no I have no sympathy for your rant. Your house was in no danger of falling and you would have had plenty of time to move everything before it fell. So you are posting a RANT here to tell everyone how lazy you are and that UO should fix something that has been around a long long time.

What I fail to understand is once everything was released by you demoing the house is did you really believe that you had enough time to get all your stuff before it decayed and went poof. If you had that few items to move everything before it decayed then you didn't have that much to release to begin with. I also fail to understand if there were items there that was that high end why you would even risk losing it to begin with.

IMHO this is got to be one of the dumbest rants blaming UO for being lazy.

I'am sorry for your loss. I had the server delete my stuff because i was just as lazy as you. Tho i posted only on the siege perilous forum.

I did what all those "mr-know-it-all" on uhall in this thread posted. I placed a house ontop of all my equipemt to have it all in one stack. As soon as the temp house model vanished all my stuff got deleted except for 1 item. It is an easily reproduceable bug. Stack 2 items ontop of each other, drop a house on the 2 items and cancel the placement ... tadah ...

Anyways, if you need help and play on SP give me and others a holler on general chat.

All the positives and negatives floating through this thread highlight one specific point:

There needs to be a better system in place for packing up your stuff and moving to a new house. The "moving crate" should be an account bound object that exists in some limbo space, not under the house, and there should be a button on the housing menu that reads "Empty house into moving crate." Then you could move, and everything in your house would move to the new location.

The present method of the system leads to a pain in the butt, and should be better designed. Plus, sure, this case was a veteran, but non-veterans certainly have expressed confusion over this particular tool a great many times in the past.

First, I am sorry for your loss.

The GMs have become notoriously unhelpful and unresponsive. I think that giving you the info on how to recover items is something they should have done.

Also don't rely on a GM for a correct answer. When I paged about Anniversary rewards, I got a a response about vet rewards, that included incorrect information about the number of rewards that the account has available.

Lately their job description seems to be "Alienate as many UO customers as possible."

The same holds true for EA--I have filed multiple customer service complaints that have never been answered. Perhaps they think that if they drive enough customers away, they can close UO down.

The next time you encounter a similar problem:

Post the question on the Stratics forum ASAP. Chances are you will get the info you need quickly.

On some Shards, asking a question in general chat can also be helpful.

I found an Idoc in fel ATL by the glow moongate... chests just hovering in the air... tried to grab them, but no dice. So I dropped a 7x11 plot under them, and lo and behold, they dropped right on the steps. I demolished the house and scooped up the goodies.

Several paragon chests, and some nice faction items, and a crystaline ring!!!

I vendored everything and had millions in my pocket in a matter of hours.

And i am just coming back to UO, someones loss turned out to be a happy ending!

I thought housing decay was turned off?

...

As far as the OP, with the invention of house teleport tiles, there's no reason for anyone to lose their stuff unless they do something foolish. To make a post with a "complaint" because of your own ignorance... well that's just annoying.

No , its not 100% his fault.

Would you blame a new player who has not has as much experience?

The system tells him what is supposed to happen but it doesn't happen. The fact that the player is new or old is irrelevant.

Its a fracking bug, its shoddy design but it is NOT the users fault. Are the players required to remember every inconsistency in the game?

This.

It´s interesting to see how many posters that are ready to shoot him down for posting about a negative experience ingame that shouldn´t have happened in the first place. Also sad to see.

I´ve played this game for about 6 years and I bet that there´s loads of stuff I´m still unaware of. So just because he´s a vet doesn´t mean it´s "his own fault" or "he should´ve known". No, people, project that negativity to where it belongs.

And the GM not helping, that´s just inexcusable...

Oh, and a tip for anyone should they stumble upon some "floating" objects. Try standing a few tiles to the south of the object and then try to drag it to your backpack. Usually works for me.

It amazes me on how many of you are so biased one way or the other on this stuff.

The PLAYER choose to drop the house. This means they didnt care to take the time to unlock items or axe anything to cart off. This is their choice and as far as it goes its the lazy mans way of doing it. That aside, they took the risk not you. It is a personal choice in my opinion and I have no say in their choice of how to play. As for the floating items just use the house placement tool... choose a house size to fit and dont confirm it it should move any thing to the ground near the south west corner. Other than that the other method works well also.

Risk, lazyness, what?

Customers aren't supposed to magically be able to read between the lines and figure out that the instructions about their house are in fact wrong.

If the instructions about dropping his house had said "Items on upper floors will float in the air and be unlootable, and GMs will not recover them for you", he or she likely wouldn't have done it.

And even if they HAD written the instructions this way and the customer had STILL done it... it's still proper customer service for the GMs to drop the items to the ground upon request. YES.

(The individual handling of a person who the CS people think are overusing the CS repeatedly is a different situation from a customer who just didn't read something, or didn't get it right, and now needs help).

If we're going to place blame, it should go where it belongs, and whatever failings may have happened, it should be clear that the customer is not where that blame belongs. (especially when the house's own instructions were false).
