Defensive mage options

Newbie question, I haven't been able to get the big picture from the information scattered around this forum:

I am currently deciding on the defensive options of my mage template:

- Defensive wresting with anatomy
- Wrestling
- Mage weapon
- Parrying

My current target build:

120 Magery EI Resist Med
100 Scribe

Leaves 120 points (700 cap).

I tend towards 120 Parry + mage weapon if I can get the required items - is this a feasible allround build? Disarm and PvP a big problem in practise?

Alternatively I could see 100 Anatomy + 20 Focus. Easier on stats, free mana regen.

How do these options compare? How does Wrestling compare to defensive Wrestling?

If your human i dont see any reason as to why you would use anatomy in your build.

As a human you have JOAT (innate 20 in all skills) so you wont gain a thing by using anatomy.

If you went parry, why would you use a mage weapon?? It would negate the pot chugging ability.

I would personaly lean towards wrestle over parry because;

120 wrestle vs 120 swords (c.p.) = 50% chance to hit (on both sides)

120 parry vs 120 swords (c.p) = 35% chance to parry.

drop scribe and use parry with wrestle, or parry with 100 anatomy if ur not at 720 cap......like me for instance im 2 years old (710 cap)so i went

120 mage
120 eval
120 resist
120 parry
120 wrestle
110 med

i used to have 100 anatomy and 120 med but disarm and stun punch comes in handy more than having the 10 extra med.

another viable option would be drop mage to 100 and use crystalline ring to get to 120...but in my case i use a imbued ecru with 8 dex 50 ep 3 sdi (12 on kasa) 13 physical resist....... yea dexxers dont like me very much.

Feel sorry for your ring :(

my wrestle scribe uses a 50 ep 15dci 3fcr rest in lmc and uses kasa and pendant (non faction)

Ok, it seems some folks here need some advice on this issue, so here goes....

1. Parry skill requires 80 dex minimum to even have a shot at doing what its intended to do. Rough on mana pool!!

2. Anatomy + Eval +20 divided by 2 = defensive parry, so 110 eval +110 anat + 20(a given to every toon for this equation) divided by 2= 120 defensive parry using ZERO dex, so no mana pool hit!!
PS.....to whomever referred to JOAT on this and the other why comment...wow....read up on the facts before going there please!!

3. Wrestle needs hit chance and swing speed (based on dex again mana pool hit!!).

4. Wow no one said this and its actually the best option.......ZERO mage wep with 120 magery and your defending the same as a 120 wep skill!!!

5. Go to test server, roll up a toon, try all these possibilities, its easily done, and go with what you like the best.
I did and I opted for the anat/eval route ALONG with the 120 mage wep, since ima 120 magery anyway! This way I have double defense, for those times Im disarmed of my mage wep! Plus I was doing 30ish damage to mobs with the wep, so theres a bonus!!!

6, Lastly, I opted for spellweave instead of scribe, altho its stoned for book work, and Im lovin it!

Thanks for all the feedback!

KoolAid, I will give the different options a try on TC to see what fits best for my style. :thumbup1:

what's wrong with my ring....i already have 70 dci so i dont need it on my ring....and i wear inq for fcr3....being tho im not a wrestle scribe mage, ima a parry mage who wears aof and kasa of rajin my ring is way better suited for me than yours rev...

Wrestle does not need ssi or hit chance...hit chance helps but is not necissary...with all the arties and imbuing nowadays its easy top get dex to 80 and have a good mana pool

This is what happens when an uninformed non-pvp player decides to make a post and sound like a champ.

To support my claim that you are horrible, refer to number 4 of your post. Only the most inadequate of subpar players use a two handed -0 magery mage weapon.

Look at number 2....defensive parry? anatomy and eval is defensive wrestle...u shouldnt post about pvp when all u do is pvm

And both of you

Come see me on atlantic WITH my 120 mage wep...WITH eval and anatomy.

Defensive wrestling based on eval and anatomy WILL most certainly PARRY your dexxer attempts.
Lame to wanna play on words, but I guess thats all you got.

Hmmm, seems as tho your only lame recourse was to put words there that arent actually there.
Go ahead and quote exactly where it says TWO HANDED MAGE WEP....number one. (seems as tho you have no idea how to get zero mage wep)

Number two, some of us are actually playing a non-pot sucking character, and Im doing just fine. So suck your pots, because if you are, you need it against a non-pvper.
hehehe.

Finally....non-pvp?.........Atlantic fel, anytime, anywhere.

It most certainly will not parry a dexer attempt. Your JoAT 20 parry/bush might parry if you have a mage weapon equipped.

*note - Capitalizing random words in a sentence does not make you correct.

There is no one handed weapon that has a -0 Mage Weapon property. Using my superior logic, I deduced that you are referring to the two handed weapon that has those properties. Of course I know you can put magery on jewelry/talisman to counter that, but that isn't what you said (you can read what you said above).

Anyone who does not use pots in PvP is an idiot and not a good player, it is as simple as that.

Now, I don't know if I'm reading this properly so I have to ask. Are you saying that you have Eval and Anat on your template, and you still equip a mage weapon? There is no point to using the mage weapon. The only possible reason I could see for anyone doing this is to say "well now when I get disarmed I don't get hit", but if that's the case why would you ever even equip the mage weapon? It serves no purpose??

I don't really expect you to make this make sense because I'm quite certain that there isn't anything you can say to justify some of the asinine comments that you've made.

Not defending the other guy but with the abundance of disarm newbs everywhere, anat does help for defense. If I were going for a pure defensive template, I'd do a bushido/parry with anat. You get a little extra damage from the anat when hitting with a weapon and in the VERY likely event of getting disarmed, you only lose 35% chance of parry ;)

Again, that is purely cramming numbers.

I agree Anat/Eval is great. But why would you have Anat/Eval and then equip a staff of the magi? Why wouldn't you just throw a book or shield on for extra mods?

Because spellbook/shield doesn't work with parry/bush combo:lol:

Bush parry and anat on a template?

mage 120
eval 120
?? 20
resist 120
bush 120
parry 120
anat 100

That looks like poop to me.

Please stop.

2. Anatomy + Eval +20 divided by 2 = defensive parry, so 110 eval +110 anat + 20(a given to every toon for this equation) divided by 2= 120 defensive parry using ZERO dex, so no mana pool hit!!

You dont use Parry instead of Wrestling or anatomy/eval you use it in conjuction, for even greater defense.

3. Wrestle needs hit chance and swing speed (based on dex again mana pool hit!!).

it does not REQUIRE any of those. I have several wrestlers and not a single one of them have HCI or Swingspeed Increase on their armor. I can see the point of HCI but SSI i purley wasted and you would probably be better of with other stats then HCI anayway.

4. Wow no one said this and its actually the best option.......ZERO mage wep with 120 magery and your defending the same as a 120 wep skill!!!

Two handers are bad. You cant chug.

I did and I opted for the anat/eval route ALONG with the 120 mage wep, since ima 120 magery anyway! This way I have double defense, for those times Im disarmed of my mage wep! Plus I was doing 30ish damage to mobs with the wep, so theres a bonus!!!

Sure you have double defense but not at the same time. The only time you make use for anat/eval is when your getting disarmed.
And as i said before, you cant chug so ppl will probably kill you anyway.

On a side note. Maybe the reason you dont like parry is just because you dont use potions? I use 50ep and agi and str potions to increase my stats.
Its allso increadibly easy to improve stats now that imbuing is around.

Best of luck to the OP.

120 parry vs 120 swords (c.p) = 35% chance to parry.

Well, first you need to include the other variables in that mix. Assuming that OP will have 45% DCI and 80 + dex with 120 Parry. That definitely ups the percentage of reflecting a hit.
