Sleep was elusive.
Melody sat in the living room thinking over the meeting she and Thea recently had with Governor Durreah. Although she acted like his suggestion had never crossed her mind, in reality, she had already spoken with most of the townspeople. They would be perfectly comfortable with a Caine taking power over Cove without an election. It was Melody herself who was requesting the election. She knew the townspeople would accept a Caine as the new mayor, she wasn’t sure about the rest of Britannia, without an official election. But it appeared that with this new information from Governor Durreah, her fears might just be unfounded.
Thea, however, was a surprise. It wasn’t often that her feisty sister surprised her. If she was interested in leading the town, Melody certainly was fine with that. She just never thought for a minute that either Thea or Mason would want to do it.
Melody almost laughed out loud at the expression that would be on her father’s face if Thea took over as mayor. Both Thea and Mason had borne most of the brunt of father’s ire; they both were the disappointments in his eyes. Melody, however, was the “good child”...the one that always followed the rules; always did what was expected of her. She discovered just how useful it was being the “favorite”.
Thea thought father wouldn’t allow her to become Cove leader, but even though her father was called back to work as temporary Cove Captain, Melody knew he held no power. It was Melody the guard followed.
She could allow Thea to be Mayor. Perhaps it would do Thea some good, maybe even calm her a bit; being responsible for someone other than herself for once.
Still…something felt wrong. Until she figured out what was wrong, it would be a very long, sleepless night.
