It's all fine how it is now.When UO first started, there were no 120 skills so for a player to res another player it wasn't just a press of a button.
There was no item insurance, no ability to instantly loot your own corpse and no lower reagent cost suits.
With all the slow changes over time, death has become just another debuff, no big deal, you can die and get ressed instantly no matter where you are. You can even log out and save your pet when you die.
I think death should give you more of a penalty, perhaps just a 10 minute stat loss or some kind of penalty other than losing 5k gold.
If you we used stat loss as a penalty on everyone, then the game would die even faster and then we would never have new players want to play.
For example:
There is a player named Peter The Keeper Of Secrets, he's a great mage of sosaria and he spent almost 2 month on training his magery skills. One day Peter decides to enter felucca, he seeks the adventure and action near the famous moongate of yew, when he came to yew he saw a bunch of actions and wanted to join the fun. Once he joined the fight he discovered that the players were all in the same guild. He starts to shake and got scared, he screams to them "Sorry, I didn't see you were all in the same guild, please spare me my life". The players are looking at him for a second and then said "lets kill this nub". The great mage Peter died and he notice that his skill went down and it got a timer until he can use his full power again. So Peter waits for 10 minutes to get his power back. After 10 minutes Peter feels that he's strong again and he goes back to yew gate and gets killed again by the same players. This time he waits it out in ghost form. After 10 minutes he got his power back and saw a nice healer at the gate, so he decides to get a res from the nice healer Tom, but when Peter came back to life he saw a evil ninja named Edward coming out from the shadows with a bow in his hand. Edwards says "hi nub" and then attacked Peter. Peter is dead, again, he have to wait for stat loss to go off once again. Peter feels down, he don't know what to do, he cannot use any of his power, he cannot fight them all alone, he cannot learn how to fight if he's always in stat loss. After few weeks of playing near the gate and the same things were happening all the time, over and over again. Peter decides to end his pain, he takes a dagger into his heart and dies. Peter The Keeper Of Secrets is now gone, his spirit moved on to a better place.
