Siege was and still is a different uo world. The shard was meant to challenge the vet player who needed a bigger hurdle to scale. Way before factions we had the good/evil system. It worked. The change to factions and its various morphings has hurt the shard.
The Good vs Evil system was not working as it was meant too. There was very few Heroes and most of the Evil was hunting other Evils and reds as hunting blue would not give any loot. Anyway, I do think it was better for Siege than factions.
From the old Siege Guide:
Evil characters and heroes
With the Good/Evil system players can sign up to play as evil characters. In addition, players who oppose them can gain reknown as heroes. Both sides will gain special powers to recognize their dedication to either virtue or the forces of evil. Note that in everything below, "kills" is defined by "the person who did the most damage when the person was killed." You can sign up for being evil by saying, "I am evil incarnate" at any shrine. You will start with on sphere 1 and have 10 lifeforce. There is a minimum character age of 24 played hours before you can do this.
What does it mean to be evil?
This is permanent and irrevocable. (I don't believe it should be permanent, a week or maybe a month to leave it would be fine)
This turns you permanently red and makes you freely attackable. (This is great for RP, except the permanent thing)
You will gain the title of "the Evil," and you will have "[evil]" attached to your name when looked at.
If you look at yourself as an evil person, you will get your "sphere" level and "lifeforce" reported as well (see below for an explanation of this).
The more advanced the player, the higher initial values of sphere and lifeforce the evil will start with.
Evil people are not automatically killed in justice regions. In fact, they are under the protection of Lord British's guards just like innocents are.
Evil people cannot be resurrected at shrines of the Virtues. They can, however, be resurrected at any healer, or at the Shrine of Chaos.
Gaining power as an evil
When evils kill wisps (the regular 'good' ones), they gain lifeforce.
When evils kill innocents that they attacked, all the evil's stats and skills fall by 50% for five minutes. They also lose lifeforce. If the evil has 0 lifeforce, then the evil can also be reported for murder. Lastly, they cannot hide, recall, or gate away for those five minutes.
When evils kill innocents that attacked them, the innocents are lootable, and cannot report the evil for murder. In other words, innocents should not attack evils unless they are prepared for the consequences of death!
When an evil kills a hero, they gain sphere and lifeforce proportional to the sphere and lifeforce of the hero they slew (up to 20%). In addition, the hero is completely lootable, and cannot report the evil for murder.
If the evil has any murder counts, they cannot gain sphere or lifeforce.
Evils can kill evils freely.
Sphere level is calculated with one of these formulas: Sphere = (Lifeforce - 5) / 5 or Sphere = Lifeforce / 10
I'm not sure all of this powers are good for Siege and we may need some alternatives.
Interacting with evil
Healing evil is a criminal act.
Attacking evils makes you gray to all evils for two minutes. In addition, you are lootable if killed. You do not get this flag for attacking an evil player that just attacked an innocent.
Looting an evil corpse will make you gray to all evils for two minutes as well. (I would like this 2 mins grey to reds to count vs our reds too, as it would help reds defend them self in town)
How does this affect outsiders ?
This system was created in order to foment roleplay and to restore large-scale player vs player conflict around a grand good and evil struggle. However, not everyone wants to participate. In particular, innocents definitely do not want to be merely cannon fodder in the face of evil. Innocents who die to evil that attacks them are unlootable. Their items remain with the ghost. In addition, the evil who attacked them loses 50% of their stats and skills for five minutes, cannot recall, gate, or hide for those five minutes, and loses sphere and lifeforce.
This is only the evil part but I very few wanted to be Heroes. There are alot advantages from being blue now so we don't need the Hero part
Oh, we have has our days of bad press.......like guilds who invaded from a production shard to go on major killing sprees. We did have alot of reds and pk's who changed like socks every so often. Some good some bad. What hurt Siege the most though was housing.
We have very few reds now so I doubt that will happen again. I also remember a red from a DF guild tell me, "Blue do not die easy here", short before his guild went home to DF. Think it was Dobberman.
Yes housing had always been a problem. When players could place a house on each shard, it vas very hard to get a home here and large homes vas very expensive. Now we have alot of ghost houses. Alot old players keep paying their house holder account. I don't know if they play on other shard now or not play at all. We could need some kind of refresh back, maybe just once a month. We also need bigger bank boxes to help players who can't place a house here.
A system that works much like rented vendors would work too, where a player could rent a container in a player house or maybe marked maybe 5x5 tiles, where the renter was allowed to lockdown/secure 25/125 items. I would love to rent out a few corners in my castle.
When the game changed that aspect of uo many players couldnt handle the stress of needs verses the $ of the game. Those of us lucky enough to have homes on grandfathered accounts on Siege were the lucky ones. Many dont have the freedom to have that privelage. Its hard to run a character out of a bank box and on Siege that is double jeopardy.
My idea for rented Containers/Tiles would help here as it would be protected like the wendors, where it take a month to get rid of a renter and that do give the renter time to find a new home. Maybe he should get a warning, when he login one any shard, telling him how many days left if the house owner get tired of him. I also think his items should end up in a moving box in his bank if the time run out.
I don't like the idea of a second house on Siege but maybe we could allow a second house not bigger than 64 tiles and with refresh once a month.
Kelmo I hear we got more people lurking about ... I hope we can keep some....
I see old names back too and cross my fingers.
