Dark Wisps?

So I'm "kinda" new to Siege and I must say my biggest woe has not been PK'rs, It has not been the "No Insurance" rules.. It has not been the inflated prices.. All these I take in stride cause I welcomed the challenge of a "harder" shard.

I must wonder though.. the Dark Wisps.. They don't seem to have a place in Ultima Lore..

I know where the Wisps came from. I am familiar with all the lore behind the Wisps and how they came to Sosaria. I even have a fairly well put together translator of Wisp language and can converse with them in a limited manner. So I must ask..

Where did Dark Wisps come from? Is this something they just made up to throw on Siege to add to the challenge? If you know where the "Wisps" came from then you also know they could care less about anything that goes on in our world and only care about finding a way back.
There are no "Good" Wisps or "Bad" Wisps. There are only "trapped" Wisps.

I'm just saying.. please make some small attempt to follow the Ultima story...
too many of these small discrepancies start to take us away from the real story behind this game.

And if we aren't playing "Ultima" the game, then we might as well be playing something else... like WoW, or LoTRO... not that there is anything wrong with those games.. but it is a different game with a different storyline. Isn't it?

Yeah and sorry this doesn't fit in with most of the posts here about what everyone did or didn't get lately.. But I think we should get back to talking about the game and stuff in the game by now.

Some might say this should only be on the Siege forum.. but all the shards seem to be straying from the original storyline.. slightly.. but I worry that this may turn into a "In for a penny in for a pound" thing.

They are on all shards, in different places. If i remember right they first kinda showed up around the Lycaem in moonglow when they were trying to find the real Book Of Truth. They then appeared in the Void version of Moonglow in the Mad Mage event (blackrock detector) Not sure if they ever did any real fiction on what created the dark wisps though.

The only difference with the dark wisps on siege is that they roam the countryside, darks wisps were added in third dawn, they can be found on every shard in L2 of the wisp dungeon in ilish. There's also a "new" version of them now, same name but they're different, the new ones are down in the abyss and have a psychic barrier you need blackrock to destroy. As to the story behind them, your guess is as good as mine, I haven't really been able to follow much of UO's story since they started adding landmasses (with the exception of T2A, that was well explained, the others just used the cop out that it's another shard of sorsaria)

Your memory serves you well Xalan.. they were originally called into Sosaria at the Lyceum... they have been trapped ever since.. There are no "Dark" or "Evil" wisps though in Ultima history. They are totally indifferent to the conflicts of our world according to lore.

Umm sorry to interrupt your friendly get together... but dark wisps were around during the FoA storyline and are tied intimately to the lore and my story, they just wont tell you how cause its too freaky and not PG-13.

But I think with a little bit of searching you can find an answer.

noone really wants to hear the truth about the wisps "indifference" and how they were "formated" to fit the new "UO"...

you wouldn't even beleive me if I told you...

ah there we go... found it :

Another group made a home in halls delved into the mountains near the Shrine of Honesty. These scholars were called the Zog Cabal, but have also been called the Followers of Armageddon, since the other inhabitants of Ilshenar have long ceased to think of themselves as such. They were scholars and turned their study away from the facets to the many planes of existence beyond Sosaria. These planes, they found, were not copied within the Gem, but were outside the Gem and in contact with all of them. One of these planes was the source of the wisps, and the scholars learned many things from them. The wisps offered any knowledge, quid pro quo for answers to the many questions of the wisps' own. One important thing the scholars learned was that Xorinia was not the sole inhabitant of its dimension. There were others, and one of these was the dark wisps. The scholars questioned the dark wisps for answers their lighter brethren could not answer, but what they learned and what they did with that knowledge are difficult to determine. It is clear though that it lead to the downfall of human civilization in Ilshenar.

A timeline cannot be constructed, but it seems that the dark wisps revealed a new interpretation of the significance of Mondain's non-existence in Ilshenar. Whereas to the scholars of Terort Skitas, Mondain's failure to appear was the undoing of their plans, the Zog Cabal believed that Mondain's non-existence was necessary for maintaining some inscrutable "balance." Based on this, the scholars accepted the dark wisps' urging to summon... something. There is no surviving record of what they summoned, nor a better explanation of why. In the records available from Terort Skitas, this being is called only "bal-lem," meaning "evil one." Apparently, the other humans achieved a limited victory and imprisoned this being. Four leaders of the Zog Cabal, whose names were Martoo Saul, Junin Pince, Zendella Kxriss, and Miron Vehl, were banished to another facet as punishment for their involvement. However, for some unknown reason, the people of Terort Skitas and Mistas felt that there was still great evil at work in Ilshenar. They evacuated their people and sealed the facet gates, to protect the other facets from whatever evil lingered in Ilshenar..

Hey here is some interesting parts...

here come get them... closer...

closer..

WAAAAHHH I BITE !! Don't come so close !

“The four traitors have been sent through the Justice Vasgres into the void. We who remain have ensured the bal-lem is imprisoned. The last Vasgres, at Sacrifice, between the Arktermars are now sealed. Ensuring safety of our people and of all who exist outside our world. We can live out our last days knowing we have done what is just and that we have restored mistas. To my friends who have sacrificed themselves, may Virtue shine upon you always.”
“The bal-lem (a word here is scratched out) has taken the north tower and made it rubble.”
“(a word here scratched out) has come. He is bal-lem, he seeks to be Anilem.”
“The bal-lem is in league with the Anorlor fiends. Together they seek our doom.”
“The eight have offered themselves to seal the bal-lem (a word here scratched out) for eternity in the prison we have made. May Virtue guide them.”
“The migration through the Vasgreses is near completion. If (a word he scratched out) will be held back so that all who wish to go may escape.”
Bal-lem is “evil one”. Everywhere it would seem to name this “evil one” the text has been scratched out. It appears that what ever the bal-lem was it is now imprisoned and most of Ilshenar has fled to other facets. This is a bit unsettling. Why if this beast were captured would they not return? Why destroy the Vasgreses between facets? Again I hope for scrolls and books to arrive soon.

Conclusions

Many things are not fully explained. It would seem to boil down to this place, Ilshenar, like Felucca and Trammel is another Facet of Sosaria. A world that was torn apart when the Gem of Immortality was shattered. A world that knew of the Virtues and followed them. A world set upon by some great evil that they conquered but feared so much that, even though it was imprisoned, they still not dare return. That simple fact has given some of us pause as to the continuation of our exploration for the fear that we may unwittingly unleash that, which has been imprisoned.

Welcome to Siege Perilous ! lol

My first several deaths upon Siege were not due to pks either, nay it was those speed haxxoring vile DARK WISPS which originally I thought were just the cute cuddly harmless, 'shadow' wisps...WRONG ! OoooOOOOoooOO

I really do not know the story line/s behind their existance.

I do remember back in the day when they made Siege,
there actually was some peculiar bleed thru, a buncha of silver steeds symbols of GOOD,
which at the time I guess were only supposed to appear on Siege back then, also showed up on Chesapeake and other shards too.

The 'silver' steeds probably some precritter horses only animal,
appeared before the newer unicorn,
soon vanished with some patch or something,
vanished every where perma like, including Siege.

The advent of those silver steeds came along about the same UO time frame, as their counterparts, the symbol of evil the dark wisps, of Siege.
But those vile evil dark wisps remained on Siege !

It was 1999ish, pre trammel I think, but memory fails.

At any rate, they are VILE EVIL speedhaxxoring, critters
whom apparently target everyone & detest everyone, on Siege !

They also love to hang out in forests, Ocllo and Jhelom junglie areas etc. too.

In fact there was a player on Siege once thought the dark wisps had vanished off of Ocllo after one publish.

I volunteered to go DIE ...
said [if they're still are on Ocllo] they will FIND ME !

I went just a tad west of town, and got insta ganked by 5 of em !

Thus they were STILL THERE, he had just been lucky NOT to find them.
The dark wisps, hate my chrs. so if ever anyone can't find em,
all I have to do is go for a walk
& the dark wisps always, find ME and attack ! lol

the ones in ilsh have had that 'energy globe thing' for a long time. Really odd is you can also have Both dark And regular on that level - had paragon of each, at the same time, just today (yeah, dirt nap time). And on LS, you can still get the Guardians (no chest loot, but these always spawn in pairs)

hope you can connect the dots here...

there was a very good reason why I was imprisoned and we lack more answers... they did not want the true story of this world to be exposed to daylight... they know I love it so much that I can't help but tell the tale.

I am much less dangerous than they let on !
