Custom Housing would of fit UO world if........

When custom housing was first mentioned I had imagined something different. Be something like what the tile window looks like now. But to have any addition to your plot would take resourses gathered by players. Or pay through the nose from NPC vendors on a few of the more mondain items.

You designed a house and get an amount of required items list. The items acquired would have been dropped on the builder box summoned like the moving crate. Removing and already placed section would only return 25% of its make up to the crate. Every tile in the design would have sequence of placement and would appear as items for it ar gathered. There be a simple placement order so a third story wall or roof tile wouldn't appear first.

There would be more gathering options on the mining and jacking tools. Also items gathered by hunting spawn. Other skills like carpentry and mason would upgrade gathered materials to higher grade building list items. Granite to Marble upgrade for one. As an example of one tile of plaster wall would need.
1- Finnished Lumber (jacker/carp) or (Reapers)
2- Pulverized Granite (miner/mason) or (Earth/Ore Eli)
3- Nails (miner/tink) or (Orcs/Goblins)
4-Concrete Sand (miner/alky) or (Sand Vortex)
5-Water & Hay (buy/gather)
(theese are low end critters that newer players could hunt for profit; understood when you read the Contractor NPC portion)

For those lacking artist or an imagation for building. There would be five different levels of components needed, pregenerated designs with 2 designs per dificulty level. Designs submitted and voted on by the players of a shard possibly.

Like vendor placement at houses. Players could place a vendor type Contractor NPC at there house. Clicking NPC a window with same design items list would show on the NPC and what the house owner is willing to pay for each item. The owner would set the price they'd pay for the items and number needed for their design. The owner would charge up the NPC with gold to pay for items. Then any player can come by and see whats being offered for an item. They could then drop items from that list on the NPC and receive gold to the bankbox. Or player could get an NPC message "Owner partied away this months funds. Please return later." Items dropped on the NPC are put right to the builder box to generate portions of the house.

So an owner would have made a design that generated a list of materials. Then could have the option of placing an NPC contractor to acquire items on list. By using the contractor NPC they allow their design to be offered to the public. A design deed could be purchased from the Contractor NPC acquiring gold to help complete the build or pay for future additions. The deed would carry the house sign title like "Fancy Dancer's Lair" The deed would be used on the buyers own home sign to copy that building for their own plot (Size allowing adjusted to the back and left). The Contractor NPC could be placed in none public homes for fel and guild use.

By not placing a contractor would be "I did it alone" making the home the only one like it.

There could be some massive personal touches in the build options. Like a fountain, gallows, drawbridge or a gypsie wagon. Theese unique touches would have a mountain of resourses to complete.

And larger guild plots of castle size could be offered only in specific locations. Guild Tithing or Dues would determine who would get the next offered plot. This would be a revisit of the guild stone design to build up points. Points gathered by collecting new cursed rare drops along the lines of arty & replica drops. Theese drops would have a timer and would go to assembling a guildstone. Something like how the Obsidian Quest statue is assembled. Adding to a completed statue would rack up point value. A fast timer placed on statue bits that would do away with hording or hacks but still allow a fast talking banksitter to make gold. EMs would control the release of theese plots over time. A date would be set for guilds wishing petition their worth. Guildstones would be placed in a engraved container and dropped off to the EM at a set window of time. Top points guild gets the next guild plot and the others get their guildstone back less 50% their points.
Only the Guild Master can receive the plot as their main house. EM inspection dates will be posted. At this time the Guild Master shows their active or that guild's new Guild Master can take ownership. If noones there for inspection an EM would reduce new guildstone by set amount of points. Or a banner, removable only by owning account, is placed in the plot if guildstone is lacking points. If the banner is still there after a week the plot is set to IDOC and the plot is back to EM reassignment.
Building an impressive guild plot would be a huge guild function collecting items for the design. Contractor NPC placement could allow for alligned guild support.

There would be no issue of this for town-based structures, like for the Magincia rebuild.

However, one of the foundations of UO is being able to place your house and do what you want with it. Players were ecstatic to be able to finally design their own houses without a huge effort involved, and this sort of methodology would completely destroy that.

Very honestly, I could never see myself working weeks to build an in-game house that is based on me being able to find and harvest junk. I spend plenty of time trying to get enough gold to do the things I like to do now, why ruin my fun further by forcing me to work?

As for restricting plots -- you are effectively building a new elite system for those "in the know". New players would likely never be able to get into that sort of system, and even older players probably wouldn't know who the heck to talk to to even get on a "list".

The current method of finding a perfect plot and placing is completely acceptible. If people want to build player towns they just have to work together and place the plots together. Or involve those "other" people in their efforts.

And, I'm afraid you are about 7 years too late to put forward any design documents for housing.

The idea in concept of requiring resources to build homes is a good one, but there is no way it could be put into UO with positive results. There are a LOT of people who like to design and mess around with their homes. The deco/design crowd is probably a fairly large one, as niche groups in game go, and putting a massive road block of time, effort, and or vastly larger sums of money would probably make a lot of them less interested in playing.

And in the end, it doesn't bring that much to the experience of the game. The value of a resource based house design system no where near outweighs the open on we have now, and all of the easy creativity/personalization it allows.
