Cussing on Chat

I hear loads of cussing, racial slurs and very crude explicit language on the general chat these days. I'm a grown-up and can handle it, but I thought the GMs did something about this stuff, guess not.
I would turn it off but I like to communicate to others using this as well as buying and selling.
Be nice if we could have the GMs warn those over the top crap talkers.

Its terrible on atl.

I don't mind the cursing all that much, but the homosexual stuff and the explicit sexual dialogue is pretty bad. This isn't something a filter would stop.

Basically, you take people who are angry and sad in the real world. Their lives make them feel powerless so they lash out at every opportunity they have that has no repercussions.

They know nothing is going to be done, so they can be as vile as they like. It's almost an art form on Atlantic.

I have a char on all shards and cussing, cheating accusations, your mom remarks, fat remarks, I have a better paying job and your job is insignificant remarks, its just a game remarks then the same person goes off with the above remarks, ect ect so sorry europa has its moments also. They should fo never had general chat in one game with all sides ( enemies, and friends) that can talk to each other. War and DaoC general chat is limted and they need to fix UO chat somehow. Maybe order and chaos is the simple solution.

I personally think that "General" chat in Fel should only hear and be heard by other people in Fel (and the Abyss champs), and "General" chat elsewhere only hear and be heard by people not in Fel.

Essentially, make it two channels that toggle depending under which ruleset you're under (except on SP & Mugen where there would be one channel by default).

Shame that something that I am sure was intended to be a useful tool is shunned by most because of the vulgar activity of a few.

You can use the ignore option on your avatar for that person.

That’s the point – I shouldn’t have to leave the channel since its considered general chat for the entire shard, They should have to leave the channel for an adult language or PVP channel instead, but of course they don’t. Uhm lol? You might have chars on all shards, but you certainly can't have them all logged in frequently enough to judge whether this is a problem anywhere.

Has still not encountered any trashtalk, badmouthing or cussing on Europa.

Well, the game is rated "T", which I believe is 13+. Sexually explicit language, and racism, is not only a violation of the TOS, it is also a violation of the game's rating. Between those two things there are plenty of reasons for the potty mouths to take their nonsense to their own Vent, or forums.

It wouldn't even surprise me if EA/Mythic actually has a legal obligation to moderate the chat channels in their game. I'm not saying this is the case, but it wouldn't surprise me if it is.

And communication which might be deemed to be promoting hatred against a group which can be defined by ethnicity, religious belief, or sexual orientation, could also be a violation of criminal laws in many jurisdictions. And there are also laws against sexual harassment.

Quite true.

We recently had to permanently ban and ISP block several users of an official game forum I moderate on, because of racial hatred issues.

Although primarily because we won't tolerate such activity - period, it was also in breach of the ToS for the forums, plus could have lead very quickly to deeply adverse publicity for the game and website in question.

Whether EA/Mythic consider it their responsibility or not to moderate such activity, they do have to consider the negative side effects it can cause, not least in volume of valid complaints.

Although I hear it said that all publicity is good publicity, such attention to such a problem, is something I'm sure they wouldn't welcome.

Incorrect, game ratings does not include external player content, such as written communication, etc.

EA even writes this:

While EA.com may choose to monitor and take action upon inappropriate gameplay, chat or links to the Service, it is possible that at any time there may be language or other material accessible on or through the Service that may be inappropriate for children or offensive to some users of any age.

i do realize, and am not opposed to others thinking of me how they wish to.

There is a difference in using my judgment (gut instinct) to decide what is best for me, than judging someone and snubbing my nose at them strickly because they curse (or how they dress or vehicle they drive).

i personally don't care for sexual unduendos. (sp?) i will leave an area when it starts. it's just nor for me. If someone always does it, then i judge that person is not someone i should hang around.

Some girls invite this and seem to feed on this in game. Hey if it makes them feel better to hear it said to them and makes them feel better, that's their choice. It's just not for me. i am not a prude by far, but i just don't think this (interactive game) is a place for it.

EA allows it, just like real life does. i walk away in real life and in UO.

It gets kinda old listening to someone curse and rant and complain often. It becomes a drain. So i just ignore them. i do go back and remove names now and then in hopes of a change. But it just gets overwhelming sometimes.

Some people fuss about neon colors, i'll fuss about neon words.

You need to catch all their alts too, but they're easy enough to spot; they come online around 4-5pm, after School, and then start yellling and screaming about various forms of their PvP dramas that they really, really think everyone is interested in knowing about...

I don't think anyone should be classified as a "prude" simply because they do not wish to listen to offensive language in the General Chat. It would be more appropriate to say that they are human beings that were brought up with the decency to respect others.

The Chat Systems has been a great asset to the game and very useful to the players. It's a shame you have those people who feel the need to abuse it.

Cussing and cursing is irritating at best and can be filtered, but racial slurs, sexual innuendos, and personal biased opinions should be kept in a players own Vent systems.

Its not the cussing so much that is getting irritating, its statements such as I see just about daily on our shard, such as players making fun of another player because he has cancer. Calls him "Cancer boy" and tells him he wish he would hurry up and die already. I'm sorry, but these type are statements are just sick. There is no other way to describe it.

This type of ignorance needs to be stopped.
