So I sold a house yesterday and I needed to move all my stuff from it to my new house, which required many trips with pack horses to haul all the containers. I would have to drop and secure everything and then go back for next load.

But apparently I missed a box... it's gone. Had alot of good stuff in it so I'm really upset about the loss. I must have missed it for securing after I dropped it off, so it just decayed as it sat inside my house.

Why cant there be something that warns you, like some feature you can activate from the sign that highlights or at least gives you a number of items in your house that are in danger of decaying?

Or what if instead of decaying in the usual fashion these items go into a special container in your moving crate, where they last for an extended time like 24 hours before they really decay?

this is certainly not the first time either... lost plenty of things but this is the first time it was something significant value to me

I always try and develop all the characters physical strength stats across accounts and store "valuable" items in their banks and on them at the bank. I have 5 accounts though and max characters per account per shard on which I am active. I did this after I had something similar happen a few years back.

By any strange coincidence did the box somehow get inside the moving crate?

Sorry for the loss of the stuff. Just an fyi for the future, anytime I am messing around with alot of items like that, when I am done I always take the house to customize mode after I am done. When you do that anyting not locked down goes to the storage crate instead of UO taking it back.

It could be worse! I have a rl friend who plays SP with me. He owns multiple houses and once locked down several (7-8 of them) full Soul Stones...... in the wrong house.... one he didn`t have sufficient rights to be able to lock stuff down in. He just assumed they were locked down and paid no attention to the lil text telling him otherwise.Than the next day POOF!

He`s a true UO trooper and reworked all the skills he lost but wow.... That would have totally ruined my day!

Sorry ya lost yer stuff

use teleport tiles to move (borrow some if you dont have)
what i do sometimes when i want to move stuff from dif levels is go into customize mode and put walls where my chests are. this causes them to go into the crate. which can be accessed from any floor.

also, when done moving stuff i always go into customize mode to see if anything gets thrown outside by not being locked down.

course customize doesnt work for castles.

That's weird actually, unless something's changed in the past few years i'm fairly sure soulstones dont decay, you sure someone didn't just pick them up? (unless they were inside a container that was failed to lock down, they can decay if inside a container)

I find just locking down a bunch of boxes in new house , then drop the items in it as i go..
So that way you know its been secured in advance

Not long ago I customized a house and items not locked down or secured were dropped outside the house under the house sign, not in the storage crate. Unless its recently changed its not a safe action to take.

The best rule is to double check status of each container AFTER THINKING IT'S LOCKED IT DOWN. I catch too many that aren't locked down after thinking the containers are lockeddown.

Secondly: There are sometimes bugged spots in houses where even locked down containers have been known to vanish. So I guess the best place to put the most valuable items are
1) in a bank box
or
2) on a character logged out.

Then again, to be extra cautious, put most valuable items ON A CHARACTER LOGGED OUT is the best place since I remember one year where UO skimmed 100 Stones of items off everyone's bank box for reasons to do with item count causing too much lag. Also I have had GMs in the past tell me to unlock valuables and put them in the bank for safe keeping .. only to discover the gm moved those rare items out of my bank box.

So it really is only a game. There are too many ways to lose your valuables, not to mention hacking and thieves and and and ... *sigh*

Yes, this is the method I recommend. Secure empty containers to drop your stuff into. Verify they are secured by customizing your house. Any that aren't secured will drop beneath the house sign. Then you can move your stuff and drop into the containers.

What a great idea! Thanks for passing it along.
