Clients, my thoughts

Here's my thinking on how UO should have done this, or how they should proceed.

Understand, I don't know if this works quite this way, but it makes sense to me. I've mentioned this before, but I wanted to put it together as a whole view point.

Create a new, fully 3D client, locked into the same over the shoulder view. With top level graphics. The client should function very much like the classic UO client, but modified with some things from more modern 3D games. The idea that UO needs to make an interface just like other games doesn't sit well with me. I think UO's system works better for a view like what we have. But some things are better in newer interfaces, such as hitting 'Enter' first to chat, with an 'Escape' out of it or an 'Enter' to post the chat.

One of the great things about UO has always been the way our cursor acts like our hands and eyes. It's immersive. You feel more like you are "there". You touch things and use them if they are in range. You "look closely" at things. It brings your senses into the game world. This seems to me the be a very important "worldly" aspect of UO.

With "items on the ground" and all the art and all, only high end computers are going to be able to run such a 3D game. But hanging onto the old 2D client has major problems.
Bugs and abuses and cheats are at the top of the list. Another major issue is that the old client would need all new art to add new things to the game, and avatars are stuck as far as new animations if old ones can't be used.
So adding new things requires double the effort along with the new client.

So, once the new 3D client is made, with fantastic artwork, that art should be used to create all new 2D art. It's snapshots, then put into a 2D animation.

Offering these 2 clients only and doing away with the old 2D client offers these things.
-New stuff would be far easier to take off of the new 3D art and plug into the new 2D client. No barriers.
-Both clients would look exactly the same, only the animations would look somewhat different.
-The new look would bring UO into the present, instead of looking like a 12 year old game, or in the case of the recent efforts at an enhanced client it would look far better.
-And, I think, but this is where I may not know enough, wouldn't this give UO more like 1.5 clients, rather than 2, and make working on the game as a whole that much easier as well as better?
-Finally, at some distant point in the future (whether the art has been reworked yet again or not), if newer computers are being used by all the players and technology allows, maybe UO could simply switch to a full 3D game, with full 3D view options, and with minor modifications to the game (such as to ranged attacks).

That's my thinking on how UO should proceed. I'm not sure if it can work, since I'm not in the field. Just wanted to lay it out and see if anyone has any solid reasons why it wouldn't work, or wouldn't be the way to go.

As much as I would love to see UO in a fully 3d, well rendered, smooth as glass, all effects, full AA, 60fps environment...

...I don't think it will ever happen.

UO is UO...not WoW, not BF Bad Company 2, not Crysis...

...if you want UO with great graphics, play UO and watch a Pixar movie after.

Also...

I am sick and tired of hearing players (and this is certainly not aimed at you Trebr) complaining about "wasted resources" where a Classic Shard is concerned...but yet we get another new client that doesn't cut the mustard every what, 2-3 years??

People don't play UO for the graphics. Even when UO was new, the graphics were sort of sub-standard. Quake was out then...and so was the Unreal engine, even if the game itself had not launched yet.

It's never been about the graphics...it's always been about the gameplay, and more importantly, the community.

That's what we need to get back.

We all are entitled to our opinions! I would rather have money spent on the new client and not some classic shard!

That is true, we are all entitled to our opinions...

...however, they already spent the money on a new client...

I want both. Actually, I want the classic shard to take over, dump this tired old AoS badness. *waits for venom laced replies*

For me, I want a crip new 2D client. Exactly what we have but cripser graphics, higher resolutions.

I'd take that! Especially if I could log into a Classic Shard with crisper gameplay! :)

Yes we can finally upgrade from Diablo to Diablo 2 style graphics  all joking aside, I never cared about graphics when it came to UO, it was always about the immersion and the community for me.

As for an updated client, NetDragon in Asia is currently working on a new, fully updated version of UO for its geographic location due in 2011. I would hardly be surprised if NetDragon and Mythic have worked out a deal that we are going to be able to utilize this, as well.

Not that I wish to disagree, but the problem with your idea is "no one will like it", the same issue all of the clients have faced, it is not that the clients were not good, or had no potential, it is the simple facts everyone thinks they can make the game new and still make it look the same.

I do somewhat agree with a lot of the older players, the 2d client is familiar and it is hard to switch and hard to get use to the new clients. That being said of course, I still try to spend most of my time on the new clients to try and get use to them, I think the clients have a lot of potential and I also know the old client is dreadful and really should be done away with, not because it looks bad (most people know I despise the graphics critics) but because it is based on old tech, and it is old, and it has more flaws than the new client, despite what people may think or feel.

People simply want what they are use to, and no amount of new clients will change that. Even if they remade the classic client, using the ALL the same models/artwork/design/engine people would still complain because the flow of the game would in fact change, since the 2d client is flawed in that manner.

It is also highly unlikely to get any more 3d than what KR was, with the same perspective we have now, and with all the same environmental things we have now. And lastly the 2d world would limit the 3d world, or the 2d world would be limited in comparison to the 3d world, we just avoided this with the release of SA (originally planned to not support the 2d client) so I have doubts this could ever happen. (and I mean a true 3d world, not like what KR was.)

I personally would rather experience new content with the old client than experience old content with a new client.

I dunno, when I read about UO in a PC Gamer Mag back in 1996, before the public beta, I was drawn to it because of the Ultima name (I have spent countless hours alone and with friends playing the Single Player Ultima Series and enjoying every moment of it) and the graphics. The game looked way more visually stunning then any other game of that class.

Don't get me wrong...I like the 2d graphics. I am just saying that they were not 'cutting edge' even when they were new.

In the end people will play the new client more than the 1% of the UO community that are crying for a Classic Shard. EA's spending the the money in the right places. Majority Rules! Wooot! :)
