Classic client vs whatever new client you just made that we aren't going to use

When I started up UO again after an absence of some 8 years, I downloaded both clients; the classic one as I knew it, and the enhanced one to see what had changed.

Well, on starting the classic up, I was lost.....I didn't remember it as well as I thought. I went and got UOAssist up and running again, but it still seemed absolutely archaic and borderline unplayable to someone who is basically new to it. And this was someone who had used it years ago.

Heaven knows what a player new to the game would make of it. Actually, I have some idea of this as I showed the classic UO to a housemate in an attempt to persuade him to play, and he just walked away laughing at how odd and incomprehensible it looked. This is not someone unfamiliar with MMO's either, we're played many such games together - EQ1 and 2, WoW, Aion, Eve Online.

For my own UO play, I use the enhanced client exclusively; I couldn't go back to the classic client. It has the features a modern MMO player expects; hotbars, a useable map, an easily sorted inventory, a powerful macro system. I have had no stability issues with it at all and it runs smoothly on my PC.

I've come to the view that the mere existence of UOAssist says all that needs to be said about the classic client - no game should need a third party addon to give it something approaching a functional user interface, that should be built in.

I appreciate that people are attached to the classic client, but I am of the opinion that the classic client itself is the biggest barrier to convincing new players to give UO a go.
Point in case.... Keep the game alive, adjust to something new so you can be playing for another decade. By then I will be joining the old dudes brigade and get fired up agains ultima online the newly enhanced 5D client with stereoscopic and stereotactic virtual reality. Although, you naysayers will still be playing on your PC 386 computers speedhacking the crap out of a 30 year old client I am sure....

If you want a NEW client that will actually succeed you need to LISTEN to your playerbase thus far EA/Mythic has not done so and so far all their "NEW" improved clients have failed because of it. I don't even know why they have betas cause they NEVER listen to what the people tell them in them. I know this first hand. EA/Mythic needs to Wake up and anyone still pretending the EC is still beta needs to do the same!
You mean to say "EA/Mythic needs to listen to me, why are they not listening to me? Why do they keep spending money on this, I don't understand. It can't be my misunderstanding or misreading their intentions. Mythic needs to come to my house and explain it to me personally. Why don't they do that? Wake up EA/Mythic, stop pretending I am not the center of the universe. Don't listen to anyone else and please, please put out a new client full of bugs and call it a finished product, so that when you come to my house I can demonstrate why I am right, and you should have listened to me all along."

Where did all this effort go ? To waste ?
Exactly.. that's what I want to know.

Now... if we want an updated client... ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THAT is what we should be demanding! Not this Enhanced Client... scrap it please. Put all the effort and development into a true 3D environment with 3D characters & 3D housing... make 3 new servers for it and offer that up. Allow us to x-fer to those shards... with new housing and such, and as the older 2D shards die... close them and open new 3D shards.

Might be a whole... uhm... 4 year cycle... but that will allow EA to anounce and EOL for UOClassic and give us players the 3D world we've all been looking for.

Honestly... I really would love to see UO go 3D - for THAT I'd buy a super gaming machine and retire my old p4

love the 'new clients' or not PLEASE DON'T make another one.

Stop wasting resources on it.

I am sticking with 2D until the end...
End of story.
With that kind of attitude, you might as well get ready to find another pass time in the spring of 2010, end of story... That would be the ultimate end of wasting resources on a dying game. Don't you see that the very fact they are spending resources on it, keeps the game alive?

I heard the same word over 10 years ago.
Actually I don't like most of what they have given us over the years.
I liked the game how it used to be when the gold was worth as much as most third world countries currency and how like it or not the players was able to control who played in dungeons and who didn't.

Just relax and have fun ok?

this troll has clearly found something to get you all rolling.

soon as you get tired of this I suppose he'll start trolling siege players, since they're pretty defensive about their shard.

ignore this guy, I don't give a crap about the EC, but this guy is clearly just trolling all of you.

You know on the flip side of things, I know people who played UO in the past and only came back and enjoyed it because of the Enhanced Client..

Both have their merits, they really do it's all a matter of personal taste. I for one am glad that the option is out there it opens doors to a wider audience.

What Cazzador and Thav12 and Nexus said.

It's now crucially important for the Devs to know that a substantial % of the playerbase now supports the EC/SA client. Legacy clienters relax, the Devs know all too well you guys will "quit UO the day they shut down Legacy client", so your Legacy client is safe.

But Legacy clienters really need to stop dissing the EC/SA client, lest they give the Devs a wrong impression that nobody likes or uses the EC/SA client, or is a complete failure. The danger is that if the Devs get this wrong impression, EA will shut down (ie. abandon support and development of) the EC/SA, which will EFFECTIVELY SPELL THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR ULTIMA ONLINE.

After massive financial losses by KR, if EA pulls the plug on EC/SA as well, meaning additional massive financial losses for UO, there's NO WAY IN HELL that EA would bother with UO anymore. End of UO.

So Legacy clienters, vocalize your support of the Legacy client WITHOUT dissing the EC/SA. Do it not for your love (or lack thereof) for the EC/SA, but for your love of UO.

I like how the word Nay-sayer comes up so often... it's like

PANDEMIC... Pandemic.... Pandemic !

We know the drill guys, don't waste your precious carbohydrates typing this crap, we know orange agents have been part of UO since the first pack of gold has been sold on e-bay.

GUARDIAN of the EC huh ?

It's a NEW WORLD ORDER, go wave your little flags at Copenhagen, encourage those silly people who say stop carbon emissions and roll in V8 engine limousines.

Just like EA, they could have rented electric limousines at least, this is freakin 2010 !

It's O_B_V_I_O_U_S !!!

hahaha don't you love how an ATLANTEAN ANGEL typed the same kind of paragraph I talk about while I was typing this... you arian fellows need to chill. 2012 FTW !!!

I played the EC from its inception (focus group) through the day they opened the SA beta. That was 6 months. I played on the beta shard more than my home shard. I played, tested, for several hours each day. My husband and another person wrote the flexible map for the client. I was as dedicated a person to making that client the best as I could have possibly been.

I tried for a bit to use it for my regular play on my regular shard after that was an option, after they released it. It just doesn't work out for my playstyle, for what I need it to. That isn't because I didn't bring up these issues and needs over that 6 month period - I did - that is because they were never fully addressed. Within 2 weeks of going back to my regular activities, I was solidly back using the 2D client.

Why? It responds predictably (meaning the same way every time in X situation, rather than one way one time, one way another time). It has features that, for my playstyle, are not worth losing for all the various features in the EC. Its macros work *exactly* how I want them to without having to go to extra effort to make them do so.

I wanted to use the EC. It looks fine, good enough, anyway. But between the continued, alll this time later, annoying animation and graphic bugs and the above-mentioned items, it just isnt practical for me. Maybe next year it will be ... one can hope.

Actually, the world leaders and scientists at Copenhagen got it all wrong with their carbon emissions, credits and footprings (essetially a case of too-little-too-late, bogged down by human politics and nationalism-protectionism issues) , and would be well advised to instead heed the recommendations of the Copenhagen Commission (which recommends channeling resources into developing alternative strategies and technologies that more effectively addresses the problem.)

Back to UO, you have been warned. If EC/SA fails, so will UO. This is how EA views it.

Woah... it's the first time someone loves something I write !

No kidding !

http://www.raphkoster.com/2005/12/20/the-end-of-the-world/

What's the most funny thing is I made this happen on atlantic, and killed atlantic, it was one of two options.

Either the EA lived and we died, or we died and they died, OR we live and they die.

Humans do not approach clients as they would animals, I know there are lots of talent who had a passion for this game who did not get to be expressed. In so many vain expenses, UO is a necessity for sane life, and a sane UO spirit of hope and virtue is essential to achieving such a goal.

There must be full disclosure, now, full transparency.

The atlantic shard was not exactly destroyed by the armageddon spell, it fused with me. When you hurt, I hurt.

Right now I hurt, my dear friend took his life a few days ago, I am a witness to too many deaths that needeth not be. I feel responsible, thats why I need so much to communicate. I know I'm not responsible for any deaths, I have not a violent tendency, my body resents much and fast since I became the shard.

I might have a slight autistic tendancy due to the mercury intoxication I had as a child and in my adolescence, I am however certain of this, it allows me to see much.

I'm not looking to be renowed, or any money I never touched a dime of UO-USD$ money transfers. I'm not looking to form a guild or require people to do anything for me, I just need some emotional coherence and a community feeling.

Thank you for this, because I am forever grateful !:grouphug:

Enki's emblem was two serpents [twin human DNA] entwined on a staff - the basis for the winged caduceus symbol used by modern Western medicine and the rod of Hermes. Enki's sacred number is 40. He was the leader of the first sons of Anu who came down to Earth, playing a pivotal role in saving humanity from the Deluge. He defied the Anunnaki ruling council and told Ziusudra (the Sumerian Noah) how to build a ship on which to save humanity from the blood. Ea would have been over 120 sars old at that time, yet his activity with humanity continued to be actively reported for thousands of years thereafter.

Enki's youngest son, Ningizzida, was Lord of the Tree of Truth, in Mesopotamia. He played the role of Thoth in Egypt. The ancient Mystery School Teachings of Thoth were past down to his Initiates who became the priests. They hid the secret knowledge of creation, passing it down through the ages until the experiment was to end. Enki was the deity of water, intelligence and creation. The main temple of Enki was the so-called é-engur-ra, the "house of the water-deep" in Eridu, which was in the wetlands of the Euphrates valley at some distance from the Persian Gulf. This takes us to the Cradle of Civilization.

Where did all this effort go ? To waste ?
Exactly.. that's what I want to know.
That all "went to waste" because UO2 was a sequel, not an expansion. The general consensus was that the majority of people wouldn't give up their veteran accounts and stockpiles of crap to start over in a new world. The sequel would have split the players into those who would make the switch and those who would cling to the old world.

Sound familiar? It should. That forecast pattern has repeated every time there's been a new client: some embraced the new, some held onto the old. What makes it even more ludicrous is, in the case of clients, it's still the same game. Regardless of which client you use, you still get to keep your veteran points and your stockpiles of crap, so there's no harm in making the switch.

It's funny, you can repackage UO and offer it up and people will refuse it as too modern and "not UO". Show them an entirely other game based on the Ultima world and they'll eat it up. It really shows how much people focus on semantics. Maybe they should call Enhanced Client "UO2" and make it look entirely different, then it will be acceptable?

As a side note, much of the content of UO2 - models, lore, machines, races and so forth - was salvaged and used in UO.. so it wasn't entirely wasted.

Yes it does sound familiar, you're so sweet ! Remembering me things like that...

I remember I was against it too, in a way. But in my head it was trivial, the level of expression possible is what was important, I think !

I was thinking even that the monsters looked ugly and that it ruined the third person perspective that allows a non-attached full spectrum meta-analysis which unites into the virtues, and also the virtue of patience and perseverance, which complete the picture.

The goal of the guardian is to destroy UO and EArth.

you want to save the world by lowering CO2? go kill yourself.
That is there intent anyway.

Why are so many afraid of global warming during the middle of an ice age is mind boggling to me.
