Aedon had given James a castle, but he was in a bit of a rut after finishing the little garden, the pooka wasn't all that sure what to do next, the castle was nice, but so much more space then he ever thought he would have to work with! There had to be a way to make it his own. And there was the Rest. It would be sacrilege to let it close and leave Aegis without a proper tavern! Where would people drink? What if knights needed rest? But Aedon was right in that running two taverns was probably not something he could manage, and he did not have it in him to let Que's doors close either. That was when he learned about the Knight's Rest moving! To right next door! It wasn't ready yet, but the tavern will not close. That just leaves the other problem: What to do with the castle?

Well, talking with his friend also provided that answer too, he mentioned what Eli and Phaen would think of him owning a castle...that itself was not answerable, the creature wasn't all that sure what he thinks about owning a castle much less what his friends thought. But it reminded him of when he first joined their freehold, and the little hutch they made him. And it gave a solution.

The luck of pookas provides many things. There are things that others have to worry about, the pooka usually do not. One of which is a roof over their heads, it is rare to find a pooka that cannot manage to find a place to stay for the night when it was truly needed. And for more years then he can count, the pooka now called James had stayed with friends, strangers, in half-abandoned storage spaces, caves or whatever haven he could find for a night, a week, sometimes months.

That is until Aedon gave him a place to live more permanently in Aegis years ago, which started a chain leading to his home in the Freehold, and being made into a trooping Fae.

The Freehold.

There are many concepts these places have, but one he thinks is among the best is the right to safe-haven for Fae (though he knows from personal experience it is not always honored--otherwise courtless wild Fae would be coming in and stealing glamour-he had done that often enough as well).

James did like setting a room aside for the first person who needed it.

Aedon liked the idea of a haven for pooka. But wasn't Cara the one who ended up needing that room for a time? So why not take that further? Yes, he would definitely be the one to provide a place to stay now, but not just for pookas, not just for Fae, but a safe-haven for ANYONE who might need it!

It isn't ready yet, he could probably fit another three or four bedrooms in that castle, it isn't much, but he also isn't all that sure who would want to stay there.

But those are more problems for later, a place where anyone who needs a roof over their head for a time sounds great. It certainly can't be called "the Knight's Rest" though. The Knight's Rest would be "the Knight's Rest". Luckily Aedon had an idea for a new name as well-one that will show what the place is, it even had a pun!

The designing rut is gone, now there is much to do! Rooms to set up! Storage to move somewhere out of the way! Walls to build!

It will take time, but once it's ready, with luck, the doors of "Innis Free" will always be open.

I have always been fond of the pooka. From the first day I met him I found him to be a refreshing change from all the serious things which plagued out lands. His light approach to the world around him served to life my spirits during some dark times. I know there were many who saw his antics as crazy and to be ignored, but had they really listened, they would have gained a wealth of wisdom and some measure of warning when needed.

The best part of knowing James is the fact that he is one of the most honest beings I have ever known. I know this seems an odd thing to say about pooka, but it has always proved true. James will not only stand by my side when I am right, but he will turn around and tell me in no uncertain terms when I am wrong. And that is the true mark of a friend.

And so, I wanted to give him something as unique as he is, and something that would clearly show him how much I value him. I gave him the Castle in Aegis, and watched as he started to make his paw print on the building and the Glade.

A first there was a whirlwind of things to do as I moved out my property, and decided what would be left for James. He set up a fine lab on the ground floor and a cheerful little garden on one of the towers. It was then that I noticed his decorating came to a halt.

Although he made some corners of the castle his own, the main body of the building, the Knights Rest ne left unchanged. And the name he left as it was on the sign. Speaking with Shauna and Llyr we figured out what we thought to be the issue.

And so, work was begun next to the castle on a new tavern. It was designed in the manner of the old tavern, and mostly furnished. I then took James over and showed him the work telling him that should he wish it, the Rest could move here freeing the Castle to feel fully his. James has Que’s to mind, and the task of running two different Taverns would be daunting. James agreed, and together we moved the Knights Rest out of the castle and into its new home.

We spoke for a time of his plans for the building and I was moved to see the depth of the heart of this pooka. Where others might set treasure rooms and private areas for their own comfort, James, as so often I have seen him do, thought of others.

His plan was to turn the Castle into a sanctuary for all who needed a warm bed, and a place to rest. He would set up as many beds in the building as he could and the name would be changed to not only represent the purpose of the place, but the wit of the owner. Knowing James love of all things puny I suggested the name Innis Free, a play on the name of one of the towns I once knew.

I will now sit back and delight in watching James bring his vision to life. And I know that the future will be good for all who come under his roof.
