Came back after a year of illness. Never thought I was going to be able to play UO again. I spent a lot of money trying to start up on Siege, a castle and items from UO games.

Just dropped castle and all belongings. Good luck Siege, your tight community is not welcoming to new/returning players. A game should be fun and enjoyable.

No UO for me, I dont enjoy the prodo shards either.

I'll give you one tiny example...i wanted to train poisoning and there is one poison keg vendor on this whole server...kinda hard for people to train pisoning if they can't get the kegs to train it...of course they can ask in chat but what if no one is in general chat or there's no alchemist on...just saying...

Then we got asshat's not doing the buyback agreement like they said they would...

I agree but not everyone read stratics...and it's not a very good think to see if you come to sp and try to build your character and see that...just makes people say "**** that" i'm not dealing with a dead server...just saying...

That's not the point though! The point is if some one doesn't use stratics and is new to SP it would scary and hard to work a character...just saying...i know i can rely on you boo...

Said this from the moment I started Siege. If it hadn't been for me meeting Night and some of the guys in his guild, I'd have moved on too. This shard is very "cliquish" with a lot of ego. There are some VERY helpful people here but overall, it's a lot of loners. If you don't log on at the right time to catch the helpful folks, you kinda feel like an island unto yourself.

Oh, and as for posting on Stratics and waiting for an answer, that goes about the same way. I'd say fully 80% of my buy/sell posts go unanswered/unresolved.

In a nutshell, I think that "tight" is the keyword there. Everyone has their guilds, friends, etc and are hesitant to let others join in.

I must somewhat disagree at least. I am still a huge newbie to Siege, but so far I have been treated very nicely by everyone I have run into (yourself included, most certainly! ). Now I know I am still barely scratching the surface of things, and you might very well be right and I have just not seen it yet, but so far Siege has been very nice to me.

As for the OP though, sorry to hear you weren't as lucky with it.

I think it comes down to people are used to having towns with 30-40 banksitters and always someone around to do something with. Where as in siege if your guildless odds are you will be running solo most the time. Its a huge culture shock when you log into siege. General chat can go hours with no chatter. (unless im on, i hate the quite. Ill talk to myself over general if need be)

Siege is one of them either you love us or hate us places. Look at some of the newer players we have gotten and have stuck around. Their enjoying it enough to stick around and most got bored on prodo shards.

I dont see how anyone can have fun on a shard where if you die you never loose anything. i.e. insurance.

The chat that goes on in general sometimes is um.....well, anyone who is in general chat knows exactly what I'm talking about. Perhaps someone who needs help or something that might seem trivial doesn't attempt butting in when there is so much trash talking going on in general chat.

Stay in general chat for a while, it certainly gives that impression. (and is the reason general chat is OFF 99% of the time I'm online)

Had I not thought to just start turning off the chat system and ignoring certain people I might have left myself shortly after returning. I hate to say it but there's a certain group of players on our shard who are downright jerks to new players, and almost seem to be trying to run them off. TnT is always recruiting and we take old and new players alike. I think pretty much any member will tell you that we were very welcoming when they were new to TnT/TnA, very helpful and that it wasn't "cliquish" at all. I can't tell you how proud I am of my guildmates and how willing they are to help each other and to those who need a hand.

I'm not sure what happened to the Guilds of Siege thread that used to be stickied in this forum. Maybe we should start a fresh one. In the meantime, there is a link to our guild forums at the bottom of each of my posts. If someone is interested in joining or they can send a PM through Stratics to me or any TnT member.

Even if someone wants to join another guild, I'll be happy to help new and or returning players get in touch with the right folks!

That's the point, the board crap and the general chat crap isn't going to make a player "reach out". General chat is a necessary evil because of the low population on Siege. As I've said in other posts it's a catch 22.

Siege is difficult enough to build a new char from scratch when you move here alone from a production shard. Then you get to see all that crap in general chat, no way are you going to "reach out" and try to be find out what's up on the shard when there is so much free flowing hostility most of the time.

I am in no way shape or form wanting anyone to be carebearish, LOL. It's just if it is ever expected for the shard to pick back up and have different people to fight, there has got to be an influx of new people that stay. It's dying because people are moving on for various reasons and new people are not staying. Log in with the SA client and you get that same thing like in WOW, high...low, Siege is always low. We know the subscriptions have held pretty much the same numbers over the past few years from that chart that was posted in a thread a while back. It's not about other games (so let's not even high jack this thread by going there). It's about why people decide not to stay on Siege once they arrive.

I don't know all the reasons, and I certainly do not have a solution. I can only speak from personal experience. Sometimes you need help, need an answer, need to find an item to help you along while training....but you don't ask because you don't want to hear noob and have more time wasted. It's not about "feelings", cause personally I have very thick skin. It's about just answer the damn question, then call me noob!!!

This has been the case for a very long time and when one of these groups/individuals leave the shard, another shows up. I can't tell you the numbers of new folk who have quit over the years because of someone elses punk attitude.

As for general chat, it is better for new folk to join that and be aware they can ignore any player/s they choose to ignore, and never be afraid to ask any question whether they think it's a 'newbie' one or not. It's never stupid to ask questions...it's silly not to. If you need an answer to something, anything ...ask it, and keep asking it until you get a reasonable reply.

Dendra, I am not sure exactly what the problems were for you, but I would advise anyone just starting out here to keep things small (not go spending rl cash for castles, items etc.) and make sure you will enjoy it first.

There are guilds out there very accomodating and welcoming to newer players. Gilfane and CWS for instance go out of there way to welcome people into their fold and welcome mostly any template/character.

All it takes is a little effort on ones part to look into the community.

Normaly if there is a new person on siege when they say so in general chat or we stumble upon them wandering around. There is a overwhelming number of people that tell them about NEW or take them under thier wing untill they can get them into contact with shalimar. In dendras case this was a odd one since nobody can seem to remember ever hearing her ask for help or getting a full explanation as to why she left.

There was another advantage I found in turning on General Chat when I decided to come back to Siege (and there was no 'general chat' when I played here before) - for the first few days I just sat back and 'listened' to all that stuff on general chat. It told me right quick who I needed to run from and who might be helpful. It is amazing how much I was able to figure out. Then I went to the Siege Guild pages on "My UO" and chose a guild to approach. I know that many new players would not have taken the approach I did, but perhaps we should encourage it more. I do know that whenever I post on other boards here, I often toss in that if a player comes to Siege they need to hop into General Chat and ask for the NEW guild. It should perhaps be my "tag" line on the boards. If we all did it, folks might get the idea.

P.S. I am still savoring the reactions of the players on Nappa when I announced in General Chat that I was dropping my house there. The ubiquitous question came back, "Are you quitting!?" To which I replied, "No, I'm moving to Siege." They did *not* know how to react to that, lol!

Why? Is it because I'm a ****? Partly. But really, if you're going to cry about it then Siege Perilous is not for you. I see a ton of helpful people in this game, on this server, etc. (Ton being an overstatement due to the population on all servers, but you get the point I hope).

if you think general chat is bad on seige, go sit in on atlantic's general chat for a few hours. then return to seige. atlantic = ill mannered, irrational morons trolling each other vs. seige's declawed kittens battling it out. seige is much more polite.

LOL ! I feel the same way when I do go on Chesapeake as I have lately tryin to get all my chrs. Jackolanterns. Everyone said did ya hit NEW HAVEN too...to find yours ? I said nooooooooo New Haven scares me, I prefer Ocllo.

Everyone is being kind delivering everyone's Jackolanterns to LUNA over there...I leave some in BRIT bank FEL Side cuz some names that I do know or remember never can go into trammel they be perma RED.

As for CHAT be it this shard or other ones, chat is what it is. There is trashtalkin on all shards on all of the assorted chat channels of every shard. There been trashtalkin way before, we ever had this new in game chat too.

One has to take some of that with a grain of salt. Afterall there been *trashtalking testosteroney* blabber even at banks when some menfolk yell at each other over whom is cool uber 733t pvper, & whom is not and all that bs.

Usually the proof really regarding whom is truely better at that pvp junk if they pvp at all ... or who is supposidly better at pvpin'
is whom remains standing and left a corpse of 'someone else' that IS also called pvp god and they whopped their arses... Course then, the loser usually says...I went AFK or I lost conn.

Some are far more silent and have nothing to prove nor say...cuz..the corpses they leave speak volumes for their pvp prowresses, they do not even HAVE TO trash talk, their rep proceeds em WHEN they actually ARE pvpin another pvper...not a tinker tool welding crafter.

Most of the pvp trashtalkin in chat channels ... I just let flow unread on the screen or...I find it all comically amusing... just guys being guys sometimes..but then I am weird.

I do not let others language or way they speak bug me. I may[ if I permit myself] to take offense when some guys do the ...YOUR MOTHER bs...cuz most moms I know are not hoes...and could resent that as a mom myself, but...since they not talking about THIS mom...I figure...maybe they just had a lousy example of moms or parents in general. I would never trashtalk bout my parents or anyone else's cuz...mine were decent folk and great parent figures. Maybe some folks had lousy ones, so they trashtalk even parent images..in chats.. who knows !

Or one can conclude like my husband does, them that talk the talk ...when confronted...can not walk the walk !
In rl someone seeing once he had a rl broken arm finally felt they could beat him in rl and started a fight.
