Can we please make the language barrier problem a priority? And why do newbies go to strores first

Just today alone I have had newbies at my store from Brazil, Portugal, and Turkey. Very hard to understand them. And then they get frustrated and leave. Can the devs please make this a priority? It's getting very frustrating.

Also, on the subject of newbies. Why oh why do they go to a store first? Lately, I feel like my store is a magnet for newbies. Not that I don't mind meeting new people, but I just don't get why they would make a store their first stop. I always feel bad when I tell them this is a store and they say they don't have any money. Then they get frustrated and leave. Sometimes they get downright rude, too. I had a newbie call me a loser yesterday because I wouldn't let her in the house. She got booted really fast!

When talking about newbies are you talking about freebies or paying newbies?

[/ QUOTE ]

Not really sure since i never think to look to see if they are a freebie or paying, but just newbies in general I guess....the ones who come when they are 0 days old. It would just seem to me that when you are a newbie of any kind and had no money at all, the last place you'd want to go is a store. I know the freebie accounts are limited to the lot categories they can visit, but they can certainly go to a welcome house, which is where I always direct them.

The only reason I ask is because I thought that free newbies could not enter a store. It just makes sense because like you said they don't have money to buy anything.

But it wouldbe nice to have some type of translater built into the EAL system to help everyone out or at leat make them aware of things like babblefish to help translate.

What are you proposing be done?

I have an issue in this area too. When I selected my main sim's name several years ago, I knew it was Polish in orgin. I knew this because I took it from a book I had read years ago in which the lead female was named Elzbietka. I liked the name, so my sim was thusly christened. Knowing that my name was Polish meant I was only mildly surprised on the 2 or 3 occasions when someone imed me in Polish. I always explained that I didn't know Polish and where I got the name. (Truth be told, I don't even know how my name is properly pronounced). The people were nice, albeit disappointed.

Since the merges, I have frequently received ims and offline messages in Spanish and Portuguese. I speak neither. Earlier this evening, a woman became annoyed with me when I told her I only spoke English. She let me know that I was using a Portuguese name. That explains all the IMs.

I'm not sure what to do. I've thought about posting something in my bio stating that I don't speak Spanish or Portuguese, but I'm afraid that would come off as hostile towards these players. Does any one have any suggestions on how I could deal with this?

I believe free accounts are only restricted from skill and money houses.

Is it possible to build a translater into the game? Do other games have this feature?

You could try explaining in your bio, in a different language, that you don't speak the language that you just fell in love with the name. Most likely they will not IM you anymore. Just use babblefish to translate it for you from english to whatever language and hopefully this could solve your problem.

Personally, I am going to make a CC sign saying "Only English spoken here!". But overall, I'm wondering if possibly there could be a category for teaching English and in that category, different houses would teach English to a different language...like one house would teach to Turkish players. Another to spanish players, etc. DOn't know if that would work, but that idea popped into my head earlier today.

I believe other games have translators available, while larger games have servers that are specific to a country or region.

Is it possible to build a translater into the game? Not currently, but hopefully in the future the devs will give us access to the Interface which will allow us to create our own in-game Translators.

I agree it's silly that they go to stores first. Makes no sense to me at all. I keep wanting to ask them "Why the h*** are you at a store when you are brand new?" but I don't want to come across as rude.

As a new player, I visited just about anything that was open and online. You'd be surprised how many locked doors you will run into. I really don't understand why everyone is all up in the air about a language barrier. You can either communicate or you can't. If you can't, they move on to someone else looking for anyone that might speak their language. It's really no big deal to me.

The problem is when they don't move on....they stay and stay and stay...And I feel very bad when I can't communicate with a player. I tried locking the door to my house and only allowing friends to enter the house, but the newbies just kept trying to get in. I didn't like that option, so I just started charging a small entrance fee to the house. I figured that would solve the problem of newbies as well as people who just came to green and not buy anything. And it would cover the cost of living expenses.

Set you house to access only and have people IM you to get in your store. I have seen some stores do that I im them and they give me access.

Problem solved?

There have always been people in this game who did not speak English or speak it as their primary language. Just like in real life, all you can do is say "I'm sorry, I don't speak whatever" or "I'm sorry, I only understand English." You're not the first person they've ever encountered online who didn't speak their language.

I don't see an in-game translator system as being a priority or even making the top 100 list of priorities.

Yeah they sure do

I think they don't know how to leave.

Now that I have my cooking skill up a little bit they can come to my store I guess, they can help with skill speed... Now that my burgers are more filling so there are leftover plates.
But sometimes I am grumpy and just load up the pay-buffet.

Even if there was an option to lock out free players from the house, I wouldn't use that option. There are free players that have money too (friends who give them money or so, or not-so-new-newbies) and they might want to actually buy something.
I might just use it the days I'm feeling particularly grumpy

LOL Raisin you sound just like me

To be honest - if someone sends me an IM in a launguage I dont understand I just close it (the same as I do with the 'hello sexy' and 'want to come to my house?' IM's that I get from Avatars I dont know

It's a good bet they are free accounts, and 90% of the lots that are open that aren't skill or money lots (which they can't enter) are stores.

Free accounts can go to stores because they can always cash-in to get money to spend. Potentially they could get money from other players, just not from money lots or jobs.

How about if someone makes a bitmap for a sandwich board sign directing them to stores or other lots where roommates might speak their language? I have run into some bilingual Brazilian players (I speak no Portuguese). Do any of them read these forums?

G

Brilliant idea coming up...

Make a sandwich board that says "GO TO TC3! The streets are paved with gold and there are plenty of Brazilians!" in portuguese.

Omg, I think I'm grumpy again today!

Actually, can you write something on a sandwich board that has an image on it?
In that case you could have a big sign that says "BRAZIL", one "DEUTSCH", one "ESPANOL" and so on... And the text on it would say "vamos a la Test Center bitte schön. Clicky clicky on the phone to leave"

Oh yeah I'm grumpy, better shut up now.

I'm wondering if new players choose stores to visit first or if they are simply checking out all the open lots, getting a feel for the game? Our store has a lot of visitors, some are new players, some have stated they are trying the game on a free account first.

We don't have much of a problem with visitors? The rude customers are far and few, and not many which we haven't been able to communicate with. Our home is on the store lot, so customers visit, skill, and eat with us. I made many friends having the store, and have helped other stores. To me it's slower paced than money/skill which is more my speed. Meeting new people sure takes the boredom out of running a store.

how can you tell the difference between a free player and a paying player anyways?

G

You can't tell the difference, but it doesn't matter either.
Only difference between paying and free is visitor hours, and a few more of those don't do squat since there is a large block of 100-300 hour afk stores above.

I guess it's the new players who just create a sim and get to the map, see the picture of a present (store category picture) and click that.
Everyone likes pressies

But I guess the thread is about the language barrier too, let's hope we can get a universal translator object in the future. It could be fun to socialize with most of them if only you understood what they were saying.

Some might not even know that it is a store. Since they don't understand english. They think the game is supposed to be like that, silent sims sitting around reading books...
(Oh hey, they're right

The problem is your game has only been released in English & Japanese, where most other games have been released on many other languages. There shouldn't be a problem with adding something like this in Japanese, though, since the game was released there.

I recently opened a welcome property and have been waiting for this situation to arise. Yesterday a girl from Brazil, who spoke Portuguese, at least thats what I gathered (lol) came to the property.

I actually had a lot of fun with her. lol

I got online and told her I was using a dicionario (I think I got the spelling right without looking..see I learned something lol) and she told me she had one for english.

I'd type in the online translator what I wanted to say so I could try and speak to her in her language. She would try her best to answer me in english. We talked for a good hour that way, it was great! When she would answer in Portuguese it would take me awhile to retype what she said in the translator, but for the most part we did well with communication.

Did you know yes is spelled sim. Imagine that...

Anyway, I would however like to see either a translator in the game, or copy feature of the room chat and private message chats.

Don't make this a thread about race because it isn't ...and no one is judging them, so I don't understand where you are getting that....All I was simply asking was if something could please be done about the language barrier because there seems to be a major problem with it lately. In all the years I've been playing, I've never seen it this bad and it is frustrating to not be able to communicate. Mosts of the ones who are rude, sorry to say, are ones who understand English and speak it just fine.

Milton,

There may have always been people who didn't speak English as their primary language....but there are more lately than ever before. I used to experience one or two in a blue moon...now I'm getting 5 or 6 a day...every day. I don't dislike these people and have nothing against them. I'm just frustrated by the fact that we can't communicate. It just seems to me that if they are going to release this game in different countries, they should have some way for us to communicate with people who speak a different language built into the game.

Of course is a Priority!

Or what it is the goal for this new "EA Land" game or any online game? It's not bring more players whatever they are? - Sorry I am just wondering if this is just a game for Americans or English people and I am not mad or complaining about it...

I am not telling that can be done tho, probably it's a difficult request for the developers, but could be just great to have a multi-lenguague interface option like The Sims 1.

Newbies go to the first place that they get how to enter, probably they don't know that is an a store or a money house, they are just testing as a newbies they are and if they don't go is because they don't know how go to another place...

The last day a skills house owner kicking to me out and my friends just because we was talking spanish... how rude! and put in his bio "Just Speak English" I know we people have many ways to think but this is a racist way to act, we playing with you english friends.

If any of you really wants to help any newbie (Free or Member, because this doesnt matter or at less in TC3) that don't speak your language, you always can find someone else that can help them, in my case I have a few Brasilians bookmarked and I call them when someone need theirs help

So, come on guys, this EA Land comunity begin big, I just remember how cool was few years ago when a lot of people played and now it's amazing look people around the world can play it again Brazil, USA, France, Spain, Japan?... wow

My friends and I we are hosting a Spanish webiste about this game to help newbies and probably more people do it, or should start to do it something like that, if really we want to this turns more that a few months of new players if you understand what I try to mean.

I have to agree it is wholly inappropriate to kick people out for no other reason than that they don't speak English. Having played in Mt. Fuji back when there were significant numbers of Japanese players, I can attest that it is completely possible to have guests at your house, or be a guest at a house, without sharing a common language. That said, if one party is bringing an expectation that the other person will figure out a way to suddenly understand the other language, there can be a problem.
Would it be possible to create a list of people who do speak Spanish or Portuguese (or any other language) that would be okay with having non-English speakers referred to them?
I would be very glad to be able to say "Sorry, I don't speak your language, here's someone who does." Maybe if I could offer that little bit of help it would cut down on the number who get upset with me because I don't speak a language they think I should.

The game was only released in US and Japan. Any others that download the game and install should expect that English is the primary language here. It is the responsibility of every player to find their own way of communicating or not.

Home owners have the right to set any rules they wish on their homes. If some choose to make it an english speaking house then it is their choice. You can find people online being rude for many reasons. This is just one in a million ways to be rude.

Those that do not speak english can also find places to go that no one cares what language they speak. It is a matter of choice for each of us.

I can not speak for all online games, but I have played a French/International game, and although they have an option for what language you see the game/ NPC words in, there is no translator for players.

Everyone just has to do their best to communicate with each other, in the language of the server they chose to play on. French in particular feel seriously offended by players that do not attempt to communicate in French, on the French servers, even tho many there, speak and write English. They have International, French, Spanish, German and English servers.....I am sure the Asia players feel very discriminated against.

And just as a point of clarity, it is not racism, when someone discriminates based on the country of origin...it is nationalism. And a great many people take pride in their 'nationalism'......it is the one discrimination everyone seems to find acceptable...as long as it is themselves being proud and discriminatory, and not other nations.

This game may be accessable to more countries now, because of the internet download and Facebook, but it is still an American game, written in the English language.

I think it is helpful, fun and courteous to try to help new players, in their own langauge if possible, but we are not under obligation to do so....after all *they*, download an English language game.

By putting the game on the internet as free to download, then essentially it has been "released" worldwide.

An in-game translator would be way cool, but I have zero knowledge how complicated it would be to add, so who knows where on the list of current priorities this would fall.

I think Qute has come up with a great solution.

Personally I'd love to bump into a few French and German speaking players so I could practise my very rusty languages and learn some more.

I don't think it is in-game language barriers that will prevent the game from being a truly multi-cultural, multi-national game, it will be the attitudes of many that currently play it

I wonder how difficult it would be to make it possible to copy IM and PM chat to clipboard? If it isn't a difficult tweak, that would make it much easier for anyone who wanted to use an internet translator. I have long wished for this for reasons unrelated to language barriers. It is frustrating, for instance, when someone provides a long website address in IM. Having clipboard copy facility would be a real boon.

As for communication frustrations, I agree with you Milton. I think most people understand "I speak English," or, "Sorry, I do not understand," and won't take it as an insult. Use the many interactions we have -- laugh, wave, bow -- those are universal language, not just punctuation.

The Sims offline games are HUGE in Europe and are all available in various European languages. It may well be that many do not see it as an "American" game at all. They may even be expecting it to have multi-lingual capabilities when they download.

That said, its also more than likely that many EU players have absolutely no problems conversing in either their native tongue or English.

You are right telling It is the responsibility of every player to find their own way of communicating or not tho.

And of course people can do whatever they want in their houses, we can find the next place but why this should be necessary? An example: A newbie who don't get the game find the way to enter in a house and wow! he meet another guy who speak his language, then they both get a mercy boot just because speak a strange language (And they don't know how IM or find yet). Really it's not funny.

Btw, I just try to do conscience, not a discussion. :)

And the possibility to copy and paste in the chat log box or IM log could help a lot!

I am sorry if it sounded like I was making excuses for rude behavior. I am happy that you found someone you can talk to freely. It is also very easy to take your conversation to private chat box instead of talking openly in public. The owner of the house that wanted only English speaking in house should have suggested you take your conversation to a private window. Yes, booting you was rude. However, one must be respectful of home owner's wishes as well.

I've been to Duva's Art Painters lot a few times and he speaks English at his own lot all the time to everyone there. I think it's just plain stupid of a homeowner to expect everyone to speak English only and I hope Duva, that you get all your Spanish speaking friends to boycott that persons lot that booted you for speaking Spanish on their lot. Most ppl living in the U.S. should be used to hearing all different kinds of languages in RL. I don't even notice when someone on the lot starts speaking a different language, as long as some ppl speak English so I don't feel lonely, who cares.

Oh my! The language barrier is quite a challenge! I own a residential property and MANY of my visitors speak portugese. The most frustrating part is that they're all on free accounts and do not understand why they can not earn money.

I have 5 sims at my house right now, 4 are speaking portugese. I have been using babblefish to translate, but I am having a hard time keeping up. They're currently chatting amongst themselves. LOL!

From what I understand a Brazillian gaming site has an ad or article or something about EA Land.

I feel ya tho, at my residence lot I get alot of Brazillian players too. I've started thinking I should learn it! I think the article must suggest starting out at a residence lot lol.

Anyone who speaks Portugese and English want to move in?

Why? .. its really not that hard to figure out if you are a free player. You got to a welcome house or you go to a store. They go because there is simply no place else to go.
and as far as the "then why not go to a welcome house?" I personally have seen bios posted that specifically state that free players aren't welcome here. Not really conducive to drawing players in .. and certainly not conducive to making them want to actually pay to be here.

Not intended to bash anyone just my observations .. me I will stick to TC3.
