Why we have three different styles of gargoyle? The original classic, the one that came with either LBR and the stygian abyss versions. Can anything be done to make them atleast look more consistently alike?

How about an all around art update. Not real deep just make things look like they belong in the same game.

I seem to recall the explanation was that the original gargoyles are those that the base shards of Britannia had when the gem was shattered, and that they didn't have any appreciable civilization. Those that came when Ilshenar was connected came from that facet, which appeared to have gargoyles that had more of a civilization or that had entered that world sometime after their version of armageddon was cast. Perhaps that facet already had a connection to the Abyss and had pulled some of the gargoyles from there.

The newer ones came from the Abyss, which I don't think we've had a full explanation as to the connection (whether it is another facet or similar to the lost lands.) However, they are distinctly different from the others.

So yes, there are good fiction reasons why there are the three types of gargoyles, and no, it shouldn't change, since they are all distinct types.

I think the new story line will explain the new gargoyles. There is still a race of wingless gargoyles from ultima lore that we have not seen yet.

To explain it simply... there are all kinds of humans on the earth and not all cultures are at the same pace in the standards of living we have here in the USA. Same with gargoyles.

It was mostly all explained in Ultima IX Ascension.. I've still got it somewhere I'll load it up and refresh my memory.. I do remember it was explained in Lord British's throne room by a gargoyle named Vasalegrum (I think)

Should be able to give the full story tomorrow.

Some of it started in Ultima VIII I think as well..

While that's one version though, Ultima IX and UO both completely re-wrote the history of the gargs from how it was in Ultima I - IIX. (not to mention the biology)

Personally, I hate the new garg models they switched to for the ilish ones also, the old ones looked better, though the wandering gargs still look the best of the 4 model types for gargs

Is U9 considered canon by the Ultima fan community as a whole?

The lack of wingless gargs is also a glaring omission to me. If I recall U6 correctly, isn't there a caste system in gargoyle culture in which the wingless gargs are a lower caste, as opposed to the winged ones which are their priests, warriors, nobles, and what not? Am I not remembering that correctly?

Isn't the wingless gargoyle the entire reason there are "privileged" areas that can only be accessed by flying in U6, which happened to justify the plot device of the hot air balloon?

I guess my complaint isn't that they are different. Just that like alot of other things they don't look like they are from the same game. Even people no matter how goofy looking they are *cough* my co-worker *cough*. They at least appear to be from the same artist. Just a wish for things to look like they belong to the same game.

Like Cheech and Chong said "How about them being all the same, but different."

I forgot *facepalm* I am using the classic client. I am betting they dont look so out of place in the EC. It is still just to laggy for me to use.

Like Raptor said.. In Ultimas 1 thru 8, the gargoyles were a pretty simple race. big changes came about during the Pagan era.
And yes the wingless were considered a lower, subserviant caste, They were instrumental in the destruction of the underwater city.

yes there are many different things:

Ter Mur - The Codex of Ultima Wisdom, a wiki for Ultima and Ultima Online

Ethereal Void - The Codex of Ultima Wisdom, a wiki for Ultima and Ultima Online

actually explains why some of history is different

If I remember right the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom needed a special lens to read it.
This lens was lost for some time..(I think since Ultima 8)
One of the side quests in Ascension was to find the lens for them.
