Who is TGN/Stratics selling ad space too anyway? This is funny.
Funny, cause when I opened this page, an add on the left opened and it literally looks like the cover of a hustler magazine. Its getting wayyyy out of control. This one is called "crowns.. somthing.. These adds are definatley over the top, and I have been noticing them for quite some time.

Seems like those f2p games are trying to use sex appeal in their ads. Doesn't bother me but you never know how it may ruffle someones feathers.

Sex is after all, one of the most effective marketing strategies.

I am not personally offended by the ad,but I am also aware that this forum is for a game that is rated teen. I figure that some parents wouldn't want their kids, after they see the ad,to come up to them and ask "Mom,what's an orgy?" I would find that scene funny, but that's just me.

Anyone notice the zoosk banner? Browse thousands of local singles. BTW how do they determine local? Where I grew up I don't think we had a 1000 people total in the town.

I agree some of the Ads are getting a little over the top. I don't use Ad blocker because the Ads have never bothered me, However I saw a similar one to the OP is talking about and thought it was a little too raunchy for a UO forum.

Hi guys, Petra brought this thread to my attention.

We use Google AdSense, CPMStar and Game Advertising Online for our ads.

Google ads are ubiquitous, CPMStar and GAO are gaming-only ad companies.

Apologies if you don't like some of the ads!

I've noticed quite a few F2P games now coming up with the most outrageous ads possible. It isn't just sex appeal and racy wording though. Some of them are actually claiming to allow you to do more things in the game than you actually can in game.

(TL;DR - Free games are relying on sex appeal and lying to the customer to turn a profit.)

I have to say that I disagree with the use of sex to sell f2p games. Considering UO is a Teen Rated game, it isnt appropiate to display these kind of ads to minors. I have to admit I tend to turn a blind eye to the ads and not pay any attention to them but now its been brought up it is pretty in your face.

Surely there is a way to screen the ads? The Roma one being a prime example (Considering an Orgy is definately something you do-not want your 14 year old exposed to, even if in namesake only).

The only one I have found to be over the top is the new Fillipino single one. I do not need a mail order bride. Do they think we need mail order brides? Other then that most of them are pretty standard gaming adds.

Does this mean you will do something about the ads?
The way I look at it is would I want to see it on my TV? If the answer is no then I wouldn't want to see it on my PC screens.

Telling your users to use Ad block is all good and well but then your not going to make money from the ads?
Some of the ads may violate the ToS of the official fansite status for UO which in turn could damage the money made from the ads. And could loose posters in the long term.
I know your more of a hands off kind of guy but if your the one that deals with this then could you please look into getting more appropriate advertising for the minimal age rating :D

Wait, people really think there are a bunch of teens playing UO and posting to Stratics?

REALLY? rolleyes:

UO appeals to the over 30 crowd who just act like 14 year olds in global chat. I'd wager any teens we get are legacy players at this point as UO has very little appeal to the modern flashy-graphics-addicted gamer. So lets not get all silly with the ridiculous "Think of the CHILDREN!!" posts.

The ads, while a tad sleazy, apparently work. Nobody can deny that sex sells...very, very well. UO has used scantily clad bimbos in its ads in the past, think "Enchantress Emily" and her painted on clothes...

*chuckles* MZ... I would agree with you for the most part. There are some second and even third generation players out there. I met the sweetest young lady at an Austin meet up some years ago.

Her parents both played and brought her to the meet up... she even came to the "after party" at an Austin watering hole, chaperoned by her parents of course. I can not remember her age at the time but she could not have been older than 14.

Not all 14 year olds are alike. Just sayin'

Perhaps I should have said 14 year old boys, but thats just ever so slightly sexist :mf_prop:

I personally know of only one teen who currently plays UO, though he doesn't act like the idiots in GC. Sadly, most of them (at least on GL) have claimed to be married and have kids.

I don't fear for the kids due to titilating ads, but more due to the fact thier parents have the relative maturity of a gradeschooler...

Even the ads aimed at a younger audience are a bit "meh"...

Wizard 101:

"The new bad guy....
(pic change to a wider focus)
Is a Bad Girl..."

Oh, really?

To me, it looks like the newest bad guy is a BAD GUY IN DRAG. Not only that, that "bad girl" has been showing up in their TV commercials for 6-12 months (hardly new at all), and looks nowhere NEAR as hideous as in that web ad. You'd think if they were going to play up the bad girl aspect, they'd have at least used a still from the animation they did of her for the TV ads, instead of having someone redraw something from scratch that looks about the same quality as mediocre fan art.

Age has nothing to do with it, though I would be very concerned if I had children looking over my shoulder at some of the stratic adds. As a former porn adict, who almost lost a family due to it, Id like to be able to browse the forums without causing strife in my now solid marriage ...

Thanks for the ad block tip :)

I found the Ad I was talking about it also Gyrates as if she is shaking....

I'd be embarrassed to have that display on my screen if there was someone in the room with me. Honestly, it looks like a porn ad.

Yea, its a little too much, most of the Ads are ok just the two shown here I have found that need attention. As I said above, would I want to see it on my TV?

They do seem to have lost the plot somewhere between what they're trying to advertise, and what they're advertising.

Though it could be a lot worse.
Advertisers are still walking the familiar "sex sells" path, and thus far apparently haven't noticed the captivating power lolcats have on the internet.

what...that hip, she gains .1 provo every time someone looks at the picture

oh wow when did we get this one: :pirate: love it hahaha
lol... she is conservatively-clothed, unlike the brazen ladies in these modern ads.

*makes note to look for pics of 50's bathing suits*

what I find even more amusing/disturbing are the outlandish claims some of these ads make. I saw one for some obscure game the other day that read somethings like join our community of 50 million. I mean really? 50 million people play your game...

Well, strange thing happened to me last night and thought I would share it here. The only thing I was doing on my computer was checking Stratics, no messengers, no UO etc. I only had one IE window open and was waiting on the Atlantic Forum to open. As it was loading it stopped and hung up I was prompted by trend micro that it had terminated an Unauthorized Change Request? Something named sci.exe had apparently tried to change something *shrugs*. Thinking nothing else of it, I restarted IE and everything was working fine. This morning I woke up, started the comp and nothing worked at all. Eventually had to do a system restore.

Anyone that knows me knows full well I am a comptard. :D If it ain't point and click I don't know it. I know there was not a virus on the computer {one that Trend would pick up anyway} prior to the situation because Mondays are scan day for me. Never heard of any ads giving a virus unless clicked tho *shurgs*

*eidt*

I did attempt to do a few searches on sci.exe and never could find any info on wth it is either tho.

If by "security conscious" you mean "paranoid", yes.

BTW, this is one of the reasons why people had to revert to using AdBlock and other techniques to prevent ads from showing on sites: because they were annoying or inappropriate. The staff should keep this in mind next time when their revenues from advertising is down because more and more people have reverted to blocking them.
