bug submission...... what a pain!

so, this week i found a bug.

it was one of those "woa.... what the.... oh thats not right..... i should tell someone about this" kinda things.

while not world ending, i would think it is a rather big bug to some people.

so i thought, i should probablly submit this.
so i was about too, then i got a icq to come do some pvp.

mmmm pvp.

k so ill do it later.

so, its been like 5 days now.
i still havnt gotten in to do it, and ive been on every day playing.
there allways seems to be somthing shiney and new that calls to me when i think to go do the bug submission.

so then i got to thinking... if everyone was like me no bugs would ever get submitted.
and then i remembered some fella was saying one day that there is no encentive to submit bugs in a timelly fashion cause you dont get anything for it.

which, i hate to say it, is probablly true.
cause if there had been something like a reward for submitting this bug you can bet your pads of the cu sidhe my ass would have MADE The time to submit it.

and the forms you have to fill out.... ugghhhh.... and of coure you need the proper cover form on the TPS report... aghhhh.

at any rate.
just thought id mention it.

carry on.

The frustrating part - in addition to not having an incentive as Poo points out - is that you never know if the feedback or bug is received, and it also seems that many times the bug or issue remains and is not addressed.

I can understand not wanting to make known exploitable issues, but it often feels that some things are ignored. If some type of recognition, reward, or even a simple acknowledgment were made - it may get more people take the time.

Reading this, I am also reminded of the time a reward was given for something like this (for the life of me I'm unable to recall if it was for testing something, being the first to do something, or if it was for submitting a bug) - it seems like such a long time ago. The reward was either a cow statue or a rotting corpse statue (D'Oh! - I can't remember which), and this was before either was available as a vet reward in game. I ended up with two statues because the submittal process for claiming the reward asked which account the feat was accomplished on, and my reply was - well, all of them (i think i had three accounts at the time).

Oh, and I think you have my stapler, i really need it for my TPS report.

I dont know if it is still active, but there used to be some incentive for sumitting a verified bug. I think Leurocian started it a while back, but dont quote me on that.

It only takes 30 seconds to fill out the bug submission form, you really have no excuse.

http://www.uo.com/mailBug.html
sure i have a excuse.

im here to play the game, not WORK on the game.
submitting a form and *gasp* actually DOING the paper work is.... well hell its WORK!

and i, for one, am here to play.

now.... if something where to slide accross my hand in way of retribution of my wasted play time.

well.

then 'work' just became 'reward' which enhances 'play'

im just saying if they really wanted bug submition to work they would at the very least send ya back a email saying they got yours.
i dont think we need treats for doing good deeds, but ill bet ya cold hard money that if there was some sort of neat little pixilated treat you would see record number of bug submitions.

meh.

It says right on the confirmation page they got the report. Why is an email receipt necessary? You complain about having to do the report in the first place, but somehow you have the time to read and delete a superfluous email.

If you find an exploit or serious bug and submit it, chances are it will be fixed next publish. I've seen it from my own submissions. This is the same situation with the guy spamming at the bank about an illicit website. A Gamemaster only shows up when you page. A bug only gets fixed if you report it.

Also if your using the new client, (probably not) you can submit it in game and not have to even log out to find a website to go to. Its right there on the menu. But hey, the amount of time it took you to read this bug report was sent already. Cool.

You get a faster response to bugs by making a thread on Stratics than you would by submitting the proper paperwork in triplicate.

Submit a bug report about the bug report...?

Maybe they'll fix it...!

You certainly have the right to choose not to report bugs, nobody is forcing you but with that choice you kinda lose the right to complain about any and all bugs at that point!

Hell, most people would sit out in their yard for 8 days in the blowing cold snow with no food if they though they could get something in UO that no one else had. And don't try and lie and say you wouldn't cuz it would be...a lie :lick:

ALL of this...all of it.

Making the game better should be our motivation...not new shineys for finding bugs, IMO.
That is the opinion of EVERYONE (or that is what they will tell you) but let a GM offer you a pretty, new GM engraved 10 carat diamond anything and you can bet your a$$ you will be running around TRYING to find bugs and submitting them. It's the reality of the game.

big long post #2, again, you could have submitted 2 bugs in the amount of time it took to make these posts.

furthermore, I'd rather have the team fixing reported bugs, not replying to people who submitted a bug report or deciding which of the dozens of bug reports gets some kind of ridiculous "prize"

you guys are simply off the mark. if you find a bug, report it at http://uoherald.com/feedback

if you aren't helping to get rid of bugs what are you doing? you are either playing the game (legitimate, you don't HAVE to report bugs), or whining about how hard it is or that you wish you got a reward (time better spent reporting the bug)

But if I submit the bugs I know how will I use them to gain an unfair advantage?!!?

A gamemaster will always show up as long as there is one on duty. The length of time depends on the serverity of your page and the length of the queue. So, for example, if someone pages on the same person 9 times just for fun that means longer wait times for you.

Also there is an incentive for reporting exploits which result in item creation (AKA duping). You are supposed to get something if you are the first to report it.

My gamemaster must be broken. Trade?
I think my gamemaster button is broke too :D Actually they did come help me the other day. It was so refreshing! And the guy was so helpful and nice. It was just the 2 hour wait that got to me cus you kinda just have to stand there and wait. Double click on something every now and again, or clean the house up a bit. Oh well, at least he came and helped me. I submitted a report about him being so awesome.

It's far more entertaining to put random posts on UOHall announcing you know there's a bug about duping valorite hammers -- because you saw a post about hearing of someone who bought 105 of them.

And then starting discussions about how duping is so bad that it ruins the economy, regardless of the fact that the UO economy is pretty much a model of various communist to "capitalist" economies from the past 20 years.

Once you get multiple "debates" going, you just have to sit back and farm your phoenixes or misterwhippits or whatever it is the kids farm these days for easy money while they all forget what the argument was about in the first place.

I like pie. And bacon. How about some bacon quiche for a christmas present?

Thank goodness EC has built-in bug reporting.
I've seen others now reporting the same way, as where before, they found it tedious to go to the uo site to fill in the form, therefore they would not report in the past.
