Blast from Past Events

A friend emailed me these pictures unfortunately with very scant nomenclature.
They discovered it from their Dad's old PC they found in their attic.

Perhaps the seasoned players can help share their exploits on these past events?

Year, type of event, phases and any information would be good to read for many of us who wasn't there when it took place.

TIA!

A quick google search returned: Pictures from Catskills "Shadow Rangers". Most likely from around 2000/2001.

Can be found in the gallery here: http://nathanlongbow.tripod.com/

Edit: So... it's not really events per se, just some roleplayers having fun.

Um... it actually seems like they just went hunting, and that's it.

Descriptions:

Picture 1
Here we are in the lost lands, at the extreme north. This area is also known as the Icelands. After a whole day exploring and hunting, the rangers rest at a campfire.

Picture 2
Descent into Fire Dungeon (Feb. 2001) - After a long journey under the volcanos, we finally reach the bottom of the dungeon where a evil wizards tower is located.

Picture 3
Shadowclans Fort burns!Shadowclans Fort Burns! Yet another massive attack on the orc fort. Before this attack, the very same force of Yew people attacked Necropolis, the City of Evil, and conquered both Undead Keep and Crimsom Alliance Tower. It was a great day for the Free People of the North.
(which seems to just be an RP way of saying "we were at the orc fort and killed some orc". and the Shadow Rangers are the Yew people mentioned...)

Picture 4
The Pilgrims gather at the Yew Abbey. Dove the Healer is giving general instructions on the route to follow.
(they had an idea in 1998, to wander to all 8 virtue shrines)

Picture 5
Shadowclan orcs assault on Shadowmoor. A fierce battle. In the end, the vicious orc horde was defeated with no loss on our side!
(RP event)

... can't believe I actually looked through all those pics just to tell you that those are just simple RP people who hunted for no reward, except for stories and what monsters dropped. ;) The monsters faced are those that usually spawn at those places... or spawned, since the game has changed since back then.

I don't really see of what significance those pics are though... I mean, sure, shard history, old stories... but I can also get old stories if I ask some at the Shadow Lords currently spawning and they'll gladly tell me about the "old days".

I feel the pictures are of great significance in terms of nostalgia. However we still do have 2D today and it is amazing how it has survived through the years.

I noticed the players were not as heavily armed unlike today like tanks, were the monsters easier to kill back then or was there more teamwork going on?

Just wondering.

Many thanks for your supplied contribution.

Back then, armor wasn't as important as it is today, not having as many mods, and also being able to get looted at any time.
(However, I might also add that roleplayers have their own rules, like what they are allowed to wear and what not)

The monsters however were harder to kill than nowadays... deamons and especially dragons were feared (not only them, but those were big meanies). Many a first death was caused by creatures like deers, rats, etc.

I'm astonished to see you haven't heard much about "the good ol' times" though... people like talking about back then and what an adventure everything was. Try asking around your friends in game if they can talk about pre-AoS times, for example. :)

To yourself, it might seem like a long time. But take a look at people who have been playing it for 10-12 years, some literally grew up with UO being a part of it.

The only reason it makes a "difference" is because the game changed over the years. Armor, housing, how pets/weapons work... almost every aspect of the game has been changed at one point or another in the game.

But like I said, ask others how it was back then. :) You'll hear some great stories, especially of people who roleplayed and brought life into the game.
The only link I can come up with off of the top of my head which shows the game from back then is the stories of Belan, a looter:

http://www.belan.variadic.org/episodes.html

There are several more, but like I said, it's the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

It is true, no special items and rewards were necessary in the Early Days to motivate players. Community spirit and the thrill of adventure was all we needed. You can find even more screenshots and stories on this page:
