best way to xfer a valuable pet?

i have this nice dread warhorse and i'm worried about the 'too many owners' thing. i know one person owned it before me, and one of the characters on my account now owns the pet. but i want to transfer it to a different character.

so, i could release it in my house and then retame and bond it. for sure that would be only 3 owners.

or, i could transfer to a trusted friend/2nd account, and then to where it needs to end up but now i'm adding an extra owner.

is the 'owner' thing by account, or by # characters?

i'll probably do some testing, but i'm curious if anyone has already done the testing and what they found.

thanks

update:

took 4 human characters on my 1st acct with joat taming/lore, tamed a dog and released it in my house

logged on 2nd acct with 2 humans and joat taming/lore and tamed and released the dog

that dog was owned by "6 characters".........

so the question remains, when it says "that pet is too angry its had too many owners", by OWNER, does it mean CHARACTER, or does it mean ACCOUNT....

ie, a max of 5 characters can own a pet, or a max of 5 accounts...

ill try testing transferring a dog between humans when i have more time

someone will need to verify this, but I think that only applies to taming/releasing. Each time you release a pet, it gets increasingly harder to tame it again. Eventually it's either too hard to tame, or it has had too many owners. As far as transferring, I don't think this applies. Again, someone else will need to verify, but I think you can have unlimited transfers/owners, so long as it isn't released.

anyone else know for sure?

There isn't a limit to the number of owners if the pet is transferred between different characters. However each time you retame the pet it will get harder in difficulty, and a pet can only be tamed 5 times from "wild", assuming the increased taming difficulty doesn't go over 120 before then. Obviously a dread wouldn't take 5 tames to pass the 120 mark ;) So by releasing you'd run the risk that the dread was too hard to tame. I'd suggest transferring it to a friend or 2nd account and getting it transferred back to the char you want to use the dread with rather than releasing and retaming it.

I've a funny feeling that some of the easiest pets like horses were changed so they could be tamed more than 5 times but I can't find any current reference to that in any of the taming guides so I'm not sure if that's why the dog went through 6 owners successfully or not. I'll be honest I've only transferred pets between at most 3 characters so this isn't something I've tested in any detail.

I guess I could start a newb character with 50 taming plus jewels and try taming + releasing harder animals than a dog to see if they can be tamed and released 6+ times also.

Can also try the transfer test but this will all just be super slow and painful as I will need to soulstone stuff around on all characters on 2 accts.

You could try on test centre, think it's back to normal now the booster's released etc.

good idea, and then i can try really hard stuff like bane dragons which would mimic teh skill levels required for a dread.

As far as I know transfers don't trigger this issue anymore. Release and re-tame does apparently, so that was a bad decision... :)

However, I'd love to see a definitive answer, so let us know when you've run your tests.

The owner list is by character. However, as others have said, this applies only to pets you have released.

Everytime you release a pet, the skill needed to tame it raises. After a few retames, if it end up above 120, even a legendary tamer can't tame it.

Many years ago, this affected pets that are transferred too. They have since taken that out and also took out the pet oneriness from too many transfers.

From experience, transferring pets now will never raise the skill needed to tame it. Plus, if the pet ever goes wild, the owner (and perhaps ex-owners) can retame it with 100% success rate. It will never trigger the aggressive behaviour for pets that becomes aggressive on failed taming attempts (not sure if it will work if you rely on +taming jewels and don't put them on during the re-tame).

So in conclusion, use the transfer feature. Do not release and retame.
