I have a pretty standard necro mage template that I use PVM. I'm weak PVP but I still feel that with practice I'm getting a bit better.

Necro mages have a pretty standard build but you need to decide between resist spell and wrestling. The rest of the build is Necro, spirit speak, Magery, Eval, & Meditation.

Personally I went with resist spell and carry a mage weapon. You could go with wrestle and use trapped boxes and other items to counter not having resist.

The standard aproach is 6x120 Mage/Med/Eval/Resist/Necro/SS with a Mage Weapon.

Theres also a very viable Defensive Wrestle Necro/Mage template that uses lots of skill increase items. The pro to it being you can't be Disarmed and still have defense when using Slayer spellbooks, and the con being item dependancy. It can use Aegis Of Grace, Bloodwood Spirit, skill Scrapper's or spellbook, skill ring or Crystalline. The result to aim for is usually 120 Mage, 120 Eval, 120 Resist, 120 SS, 105 Necro, 100 Anatomy and whatevers left in Med (usually 80+).

Theres other things you could do like Scribe/Necro/Mage or Mystic/Necro/Mage also. They're all pretty good.

I use two necro-mage templates for spawning:

Template #1
120 Magery
120 Eval Int
120 Necro
120 SS
120 Resist
120 Med

This relies upon having 120 Magery for a mage weapon defense (and therefore a 120 magery PS which can be pricey). But with that, it is a great spawner template that can PvP if you adjust your suit (reduce overstacked DCI and replace with SDI). This is what I run on my main shard.

Template #2
120 Magery
120 Eval Int
120 SS (110)
105 Necro (100)
100 Resist
100 Anatomy
100 Med (70)
Real skills in parenthesis

This requires some items to increase skills. I use a bloodwood spirit (+5 Necro, +10 SS), Scrappers with +10 Med, and the remainer on ring/brace. This is what I use on my cross shard chars because it is cheap to setup. I can scale this down if I don't have the 120 scrolls and yet still have 120 defensive wrestle. Plus I can carry a spellbook in PvM or PvP. Do note this really needs an additional 20 skill points in resist to be complete, but for spawning (minus raids) it works. I like 100 med because you get a mana regen bonus at 100.

I've also used a stealth necro-mage but didn't like it as much without resist. I've got a necro-tamer in training, but he's not ready for prime-time yet.

So I like necro-mages as my spawner and all purpose utility mage. I can't speak to pure PvP but I am sure template 1 would be effective in a group and with the right items.

105 Necro
120 Resist
100 Anatomy
50 Med
I use this template at the moment for PVP. Although I occationally swap out anatomy for scribe. Both work quite well.

Hola,

Actually you do not necessarily need a mage PS. It all depends what you want your magery and effective weaponskill to be while holding a mage weapon.

Example: I have a mage who ate 115 mage PS. Between items bonuses (my rings total +26 magery) and trained points she has 135 Magery, even though you can't really have 135 magery - I'm overcapping it. When holding a 1 handed -20 Mage weapon it says 115 Magery (135-20=115) so I have 115 weaponskill.

If you wanted to have 120 Magery while holding a -20 Mage weapon you would need to have magery training and items equalling 140. Or use a -0 mage 2h weapon. Obviously a powerscroll is a must here.

If you didn't mind having 100 Magery/weapon you could train it to 100, add enough items so that it was actually at 120, and while weilding a -20 mage weapon it would say 100 magery, even though you didn't eat a powerscroll.

So don't waste money on powerscrolls unless you are going for higher magery/weapon while weilding a mage weap...

Kind of confusing but I hope the description helps out...
