Returning character for many moons ago. Unfamiliar with the new changes and never been interested in PVP. What are the best PvM builds assuming up to 800 possible skills points?

Depends on how fighting style. My favorite is melee. I love the paladin. My 2 mains are Sword/Parry/Pally and Fisher/Archer/Pally. (Archers are pretty darn good)

As Tukaram mentioned, depends on your favorite character to play: melee, archer, mage, or tamer. Top PvM characters, in my humble opinion, are as follows:

Melee - sampire (dexxer with necromancy; casts vampiric embrace, which converts the damage you deal into health)

Archer - ABC archer (archery, bushido, chivalry)

Mage - necro/mage/weaver

Tamer - mage/weaver/tamer, necro/mage/tamer, archer/chiv/tamer, bard/mage/tamer, or straight mage/tamer all seem to work pretty well

If you aren't familiar with the templates mentioned above, a quick search in Stratics forums will unveil countless threads on each. Good luck and welcome back.

Sampire all the way....

[Weapon]
Tactics
Anatomy
Bushido
Necromancy
Chivalry
Parry or Healing

Most folks I know running this template (myself included) don't take Anatomy Tactics or Necro over GM, that saves 60 points, Chiv usually takes up those saved points leaving 120 available for Parry or Healing....

It's a good all around tanking class, you run around in Vamp form from casting Vampiric embrace, you are immune to most poisons, and will leech back health with each weapon hit... Using a high mana leech weapon to allow you to spam Lightning Strike, Momentum Strike, or Weapon Specials will usually keep you up in health, I like healing over Parry myself it adds an additional healing method for when you are fighting higher end mobs.

Mages have always been very versatile and still work well in most situations if i were just getting back into it id start with something straight forward like that.

Sampire- Sword/Tac/Ana/Bush/Chiv/Heal/Necro/Parry
Discord Tamer- Especially with the new bard mastery for tribulation
Wammy Thrower- Throwing/Tac/Ana/Bush/Chiv/Heal/SS/ 20 Necro(Wraith Form)
Mystic/Necro/SW/Mage- Mysctic/Focus/Necro/SS/SW/Med/Mage

Those would be my top 4 choices.

I run a tamer and a Sampire but if you looking to get your feet wet start with a mage. Remember the basics (mage, eval, med) then mix it up. Mysticism is hot right now but will likely undergo more mods. Spellweaving is great but adding something like necromancy can be fun too, limits where you go a bit. Good luck.

Thanks everyone! I greatly appreciate the help.

Quick question: I'd like to try out Mysticism - do you think the following template would be solid for PvMing?

120 Music
120 Disco
120 Provo/Peace
120 Mysticism
120 Focus
100 Magery
100 Spellweaving

Basically it would be something like Disco -> Arcane Empowerment -> RC -> Spell Plague/WOD/etc. I should be able to fit like 15+ MR without too much problem on my suit, hopefully balancing out having no Med. Thoughts?

Mystic Disco Mage is a nasty template as well as the Sampire.

As you anticipate, this template will be a mana hog, but it should be pretty powerful. With 120 focus, 40 lmc, and 10-12 mr, you should be fine.

It'd be nice if you could bump spellweaving up a bit for WOD success chance. 115 weaving is ideal, but I wouldn't go lower than 105 or you'll fail a lot. To free up room, you could drop magery to 85 and use the Tome of Lost Knowledge (+15 magery).

I think it's assumed to be a typo in the first post, but the skill cap is between 700 and 720 based on your account age.

You can use items and jewelry with +skill increases to achieve templates using more than your skill cap though. For example, if my math is correct you could imbue a ring and bracelet combo each containing (15 disc, 15 provo, 15 music, 12 myst). This would account for up to 114 skill points from the 800 necessary for your template.

I was assuming 720 plus 80 from jewelry.
