Durability Loss on Repair
Many do not understand the chances of durability loss on repairing items.
Assuming the formula I have in my notes is correct (not sure where I got it)
now disregarding powder of fortification and self repair items...lets take a look.
Chance to Lose Durability = (40 + Max Durability of Item - Current Durability) - (Skill of Repair/10 )
So if we plug in some numbers...
Say we have an item at 254/255 durability being repaired by a legendary crafter.
(40+255-254) - (120/10 )
(41) - (12)
(29)
29% chance you lose durability....thats basically the best case scenario
Lets do an item at 183/255 repaired by legendary crafter
(40+255-183) - (120/10 )
(112) - (12)
(100 )
100% chance to lose durability
This means it will lose a point no matter what ritual you try.
In fact if you have over 72 points of damage on any item, you are losing a point of durability on repair.
So you shouldn't try to repair till you absolutely have to.
I am not saying take it all the way down to 0/255 because the next hit you take from a monster at 0/255 could bring you down to 0/254 and 0/253 and on and on.
Find a number that you are comfortable with like 10 or so and only repair then.
The neat thing about this is as items lose maximum durability and get lower and lower...the chance you will NOT lose a point of durability gets higher and higher.
In the 255 durability example above the range of losing a point is from 29% to 100%
A lesser item with 49/50 still has 29% to lose a point
A lesser item with 0/50 durability has 78% chance to lose a point.
So 50 durability item has the "lose a point range" at 29% to 78%
As durability max goes down these items seem to have more and more of a chance of hanging on.
My character Tully has been rocking the same gorget since imbuing came out.
He did not PoF it before imbuing so it started out at some low durability (like 47)
He is still wearing the same one, though it is tattered and worn, and has like 24 durability left.
I repair more often than most, and it just about time for a new one, but two years of wear is not too shabby.
Perhaps you hunt more than I do and thus lose more durability, '
and I can see using PoF when you can for expensive items,
but in all honesty, don't get too caught up in the numbers.
Losing items can be good as it makes you rethink your suit and your template and such.
Just don't let it get so low that you lose the item when you are out fighting the Slasher or whatever.
