benefit from repairing items

Is there a benefit from repairing items? Seems like it will just make them wear faster as you will get messaged that you repaired it but the item loses durability quite often. Wouldn't it make more sense just to let the item tick down to zero?

I don't let mine go to low as to damage the max durability in a long fight. If it ticks to 0 then it will star taking it from your max durability.

I used to try to repair items before they got very damaged maybe after every outing but the items lose durability when repaired so often it seems better to let it go to close to zero then repair rather than lowering your total durability by repairing it often. Oh well it's not like I have to repair much but the mud pies in Shame and the acid slimes from doing maps in Ter Mur seem to damage stuff quickly

The lower your durability you let it go before repairing, the higher the probability that you will lose max durability in your attempt to repair the item. The higher your skill the less chance of losing max durability.

*edit* When I repair blacksmith items I wield a +60 ASH. Repairing takes no uses from your tool.

Did not know this. Good to know though.

Now, where did I leave that +60 ASH?

with a 60 ash missing one point of durability, more often than not, i still loose a point from max, thats with a tally, I even tried it using a forged metal, still lost a point. I remember it was based on skill but, I cant seem to prove it lol.

it seems very random but about 20% of the time I don't loose a point.

I carry a weapon Just for acid slimes - Spell Channeling, hit Fire area 48%, DI 45% on a radiant scimitar. herd them all in a small pile, Whirwind 1-2 hits, all dead, over. The channeling saves from a Lot of acid damage.

Unknown if something similar would work on the mud pies (I stopped doing then because of the damage).

Durability Loss on Repair
Many do not understand the chances of durability loss on repairing items.
Assuming the formula I have in my notes is correct (not sure where I got it)
now disregarding powder of fortification and self repair items...lets take a look.

Chance to Lose Durability = (40 + Max Durability of Item - Current Durability) - (Skill of Repair/10 )

So if we plug in some numbers...
Say we have an item at 254/255 durability being repaired by a legendary crafter.
(40+255-254) - (120/10 )
(41) - (12)
(29)
29% chance you lose durability....thats basically the best case scenario

Lets do an item at 183/255 repaired by legendary crafter
(40+255-183) - (120/10 )
(112) - (12)
(100 )
100% chance to lose durability
This means it will lose a point no matter what ritual you try.
In fact if you have over 72 points of damage on any item, you are losing a point of durability on repair.
So you shouldn't try to repair till you absolutely have to.
I am not saying take it all the way down to 0/255 because the next hit you take from a monster at 0/255 could bring you down to 0/254 and 0/253 and on and on.
Find a number that you are comfortable with like 10 or so and only repair then.

The neat thing about this is as items lose maximum durability and get lower and lower...the chance you will NOT lose a point of durability gets higher and higher.

In the 255 durability example above the range of losing a point is from 29% to 100%

A lesser item with 49/50 still has 29% to lose a point
A lesser item with 0/50 durability has 78% chance to lose a point.

So 50 durability item has the "lose a point range" at 29% to 78%
As durability max goes down these items seem to have more and more of a chance of hanging on.

My character Tully has been rocking the same gorget since imbuing came out.
He did not PoF it before imbuing so it started out at some low durability (like 47)
He is still wearing the same one, though it is tattered and worn, and has like 24 durability left.
I repair more often than most, and it just about time for a new one, but two years of wear is not too shabby.

Perhaps you hunt more than I do and thus lose more durability, '
and I can see using PoF when you can for expensive items,
but in all honesty, don't get too caught up in the numbers.
Losing items can be good as it makes you rethink your suit and your template and such.
Just don't let it get so low that you lose the item when you are out fighting the Slasher or whatever.

Do you take in account that you can fail with repair (lose durability without getting the item repaired)?

No I don't.

That is a formula I can't find.

Not sure what the chance of repair failure is, and if it is tied to the amount of damage an item has.

It only has happened to me using GM Repair deeds. Using Legendary repair deeds or the actual crafter to do the repair...I haven't had it fail. Not saying it can't happen but I just don't remember it happening.

Love to find that formula out.

My experience is that an item has to be really close to 0/xxx (usually single digits, if not 0) for a GM or higher crafter to fail on a repair. Repair deeds have a much higher fail chance than the equivalent crafter level.

That's a releif, I was pretty sure they changed that but then I don't recall failing to repair lately just losing durability. I see so that is the reason not to let it go too far down....shrugs.....
