Be careful when buying dreadmares. Make sure it's in an open area where you are 100% sure that you and the seller are alone."

or, and im just throwing this out here, use the Magincia Bazzar, that way you can actually see that stats of the mare.

I'm not sure exactly what is the problem here. Are you afraid that someone is going to try to substitute a lesser animal during the trade? Or are you afraid that some group is going to gank your newly acquired not-bonded pet?

Anyhow, one way to keep everyone informed is to call it by the correct name. Like Mandrake said a few posts above, make sure it says "A Dread Warhorse" in the trade window. It always annoys me when people call them "dreadmares" or "dread mares" or whatever. There's no such thing in the game of UO. If you don't know what it's actually called, then it's a lot easier to be confused when trading.

Fight ignorance, stop calling them "mares".

Also check the stats over time, i heard somebody saying something along the lines of "Haha i sold a dreadmare today, gave it a treat before the guy looked at it so the stats looked better and got more cash for it", I am not sure what a treat is, but i think its something that boosts stats in the short term.

Pet treats you get from treasure chests boost pet stats up for 20 minutes. Plenty of time to sell a pet to someone. :(

Indeed the pet treats can pose a serious problem. It's not possible to tell if the pet in question has been fed one recently.

One way to tell would be to Lore the pet and then ask to be "friended" to it and try to give the pet a treat. If it's already had one you will get a message saying so. If not you will be able to give it one.

great tip there!

The somewhat cryptic post seems to suggest that a different person with a different pet actually did the trade, or similar, and the player was scammed/defrauded this way.

Somewhat different topic - - it would definitely be best if pets with buffs of any sort on them had a single. obvious indicator in the trade window. An indicator which communicates, clearly and positively, that the pet is buffed by an outside source, and perhaps which buffs it has, so that it cannot possibly be misunderstood by buyers. Will UO see it implemented however? sigh.

Assuming such a thing isn't happening tomorrow - - it's possible to figure out with some pets - - NOT ALL - - if they have been improperly buffed for the point of making a fraudulent sale. Keep an eye out for stats which are higher than the normally tamed maximums, such as higher than 125 dex/stam, or maybe int that is higher than that particular pet type can ever have. It's easiest to tell if a trained pet has been buffed because the treat is more likely to buff the pet's stats higher than they should be.

It's impossible to tell by looking at the stats in all cases, and that's why there should be something to make it obvious during a trade. Specifically, a low-stat, untrained pet can be made to look like a partly-trained, high-stat pet. Or, a regular pet can be made to superficially resemble an old "curse-tame" (which can be a high-dollar pet these days).

So yeah. imo this whole thing shouldn't be an issue, but it is, and mebbe one day this stuff gets taken seriously and cleaned up.

It's worth mentioning that the stance on player fraud should be different than it is now in UO. There seems to be a customer service standpoint on player-to-player fraud that is lackadaisical and I think that is out of place (and we can ignore the fraudsters and scammers who are loser enough to attempt to defend such activities in this MMO). When a player cannot call guards on a thief who stole from them, the player needs to be able to page the game's GMs and have the situation resolved properly.

I'd also add that you request to the seller that they change the name of the animal once or even twice before you hand over the cash.

Am I missing something here? I understand the pet treat thing, but aren't these the animals with the nifty animation when a word is said. Simply ask the seller to say the word? wait for animation?

You didn't explain what appeared to happen, just talked about it being trouble if you have more than one person around. People can only guess as to what situation you're really talking about, here :/. If you want to go into more detail as to what happened I think that would be best.

/sign That's probably the best way to verify.

using the enhanced client, you can rename pets with spaces back in it. for example, you can rename 'a nightmare' into 'a dread warhorse' using the EC.

don't trust names alone.

or use the magincia bazaar?

wouldn't that kill off all these problems plus act as a broker for the trade?

I have to agree with King Hen, ask the owner to perform the trick for you. if he hems and haws about it then you might want to hold off buying. With many trying to get over a few hundred mill for a dread mare it is a wise man who tests all the waters for the trade.

It should be a well-advertised ban, escalating to a permaban if habitual, for anyone who does this sort of fraud, with the stolen gold being returned to its rightful owner and with gamemasters having both the ability to verify the event(s) and the requirement to follow their internal rules which tell them to handle it this way. This is where the bigger part of this problem lies.

There was an issue a few years back with people scamming other people with pet trades.

For example, one guy has a pet at Luna bank announcing to sell it. Another person agrees to buy it. A friend or alt to the seller is on the upper floor with a look-a-like pet. The person on the upper floor targets the buyer downstairs for a trade, the buyer thinks it´s the person in front of him that trades the pet for sale but ends up with getting the other pet upstairs.

Something like this might have happen again hence the OPs suggestion to do the trade in an open area with noone else around...

A pair of scammers defrauding like this should see a pair of big fat bans imo!

The OP is probably referring to the old Hide a nightmare near by, show off the dread warhorse and then trade the nightmare which has been renamed as a dread warhorse to the person.

This was happening a year or so ago in luna. Hiding the nightmare up stairs or in the stable area.
