Bank sitting at Luna is fatal - how frustrating

Kimi i think the hatred is for the murder count burning banksitters, and the few scripting bank sitters that can occur. It could also be old hatred for the original banksitters, the cocky tamers who would sit upon thier nightmares with thier G staffs and Invuln armor at brit bank, the ones who just want to show off thier pixels. Those types of banksitters always annoyed me back in the day :p
Yeah, but if they're at the bank, then they're not out murdering folk, or chewing up spawns ;)

At least folk these days can look different at the bank, give or take.
I remember when everyone was wearing a HoM and riding an ethy, with reward robe/cloak. I hated that :<

Not all banksitters - afk bank sitters. If you are advertising wares, organizing your bank box, participating in the community, or doing anything else in game, fine. It's the folks who sit afk for hours who are catching flack in this thread.

Also, hate is not the sentiment expressed herein, but rather lack of sympathy. I don't hate afk banksitters. Why should I? They have no impact on my gameplay. If afk banksitting makes them happy, then by all means, they should keep afk banksitting. Yet, if a green demon eats them while they are afk, they may expect zero sympathy from me. With less than half a minute's work, they could have logged out in the inn upstairs. It was their choice to walk away from their computer without logging out in a safe place.

it's time to change the bank sitting place... only haven will remain safe for now :D
or you can also try felucca cities, probably are more safe :p
Hahaha ok I'll try

Is it really so bad if someone goes AFK for a break? I don't know why other people get infuriated over it.

How sad it would be if real life didn't get in the way of gaming.

--

As for the OP, you're at the bank.. put your valuables in it.
I have that same question :)

THEN DON'T BANK SIT. What benefit does it give you?
It makes you better at PvP.
LOL!

I do all of that above as you have mentioned, its good to have a char logged in at the bank even when not playing, you can walk past your comp and catch a glimpse of whats happening in the other realm lol...
We share the same playstyle here! I actually enjoyed to have a "window" on into the world of ultima :thumbup1:

Perhaps for other players, they are looking for a more "immersive" experience and tend to insist log out when not playing - log in to play, and log out when done - clear cut between real and ultima worlds :)

There's a lot of hate against banksitters going on here.

Considering all the complaining that went on when the spawns in the abyss broke... This is sort of the same thing in reverse.
Luna is (was) a peaceful area where people could idle, trade, or whatever, which got turned into a high-end PvM area.
The Cavern of the Discarded was a popular spawn, which got turned practically worthless by not spawning the desirable monsters.
On both sides of the coin, it's perceived function of the area being changed.

If I'm just sitting there in a traditionally safe area, watching general chat and taking in the community (which exists on Europa, at least), and some putrefier thing spawns, chances are I'm dead.
But from the responses I'm reading here, I'd have deserved it for banksitting?
Load of crap if you ask me.

I hear where you're coming. Again I have to warn the Devs and EMs to be cautious about ruining the bank sitting capitol. For all the flak that bank sitters get, it is still very important for players to see the congregation of community. I can't tell you how many times I had to convince returning players not to quit simply because they went to Britain Bank and saw it was a ghost town. They assumed nobody played the game anymore. I don't know how many that I didn't get to talk to did quit. This hurts the game and it hurts EA's bottom line and why? Because in the past, there was this flirtation with crashing the bank sitting capitol which was then Britain. Be very careful if you decide to do it again.

My question is if you aren't going to play ..... why are you logged in?

If you need to insta log.... go home. Or to an Inn... you can insta log there and at home you can 100% hide with or without skill.

I learned many years ago never to just leave my char afk and ALWAYS hide at your house and log.

I had a small tower south of Yew and when they turned Yew into plague central I learned very, very quickly to ALWAYS hide.

You never know what you might come back to.

And I'm sorry but if you read the rules and all from EA about the game one of the things they say is never leave your character unattended.

So... sorry for your loss but really should never ever leave your character anywhere unattended.

It takes me about 2 seconds to recall/journey home, hide and log.

Even when threatened by a tornado warning I log out properly. The only occasions I don't properly log out is when I unexpectedly lose my internet connection.

Not to mention there are people who idle waiting on for instance a guild mate, a trade or any other thing that requires you to have your character logged in to show that you're actually there.

Like a month ago, I had a guy that was selling some imbuing ingredients that I needed, he wanted to meet in Luna, but had to finish up his hunt first. So I was just idling my character in Luna waiting on him to be done, I was doing other thing not watching the screen too much other than occasionally, he waited a couple of minutes for me to respond to the trade, knowing I'd be semi-AFK.

Could easily have been killed by some spawn there if they're indeed spawning like that. (haven't been in Luna lately)

There has been many reasons already mentioned why you'd be AFK or semi-AFK in a safe zone. And its not against the rules as long as your character isn't actually doing anything. (this includes burning points)

Sosaria wasn't created to be a place of constant safety. You can find shelter but need to be aware of your surroundings. It's not like they haven't had town invasions before. Beware!!!! you may end up in a town invasion. Take precautions. Don't be afk or be willing to pay the consequences.

Well, it would be the other way around. Its the party claiming thats its against the rules to do this that should produce the rules stating so.

But here it clearly is explained, bolding for emphasis.

You may not leave an active character or pet in game while unattended. If your character is performing a skill, text or action, you must be able to respond to a Game Master when one attempts to speak to you.
It clearly states ACTIVE character. Leaving an inactive character unattended is not against the rules at all, its even clearly explained as "performing a skill, text or action" (action has been defined as including burning off murdercounts afair)

Town invasions were generally forewarned like the Trinsic invasion. The Cove invasion for instance was unannounced, which caused a big stink as many people died with all their possessions, beetles and items recalling right into a warzone. This prompted many changes like warning gumps and policy changes about invasions.

These however seem to have been put to the side right now.

Its silly and disruptive, would be just as stupid as imposing random "safe zones" popping up right in the middle of a Renowned or peerless raid, rendering it a waste of time.

Aww, so if I leave my char afk at Luna and die I won't have your sympathy. How sad, that would make such a difference to my life.

The OP was not looking for sympathy, he was giving folk a heads up which was pretty decent of him.

People who have a problem with afk bank sitters must need to get out the house more or something. The word "pathetic" springs to mind.

If an in game event or item causes an inactive player to become active? Even self defending makes you active. If you are away, you have no rights to call foul. You may become active at anytime.

Agreed.

Leave Luna as it is, the last place in the lonely lands of UO that you can go and find other players to talk to, trade with, in peace, and just chill.

Is it really that much of a buzz having these random spawns in Luna that its worth ruining the last public meeting place we have?

Wrong again. It says "you may not LEAVE an active character unattended", so if something in game beyond your control makes you active and its not a state you left it in, then its not against the rules.

And yes, you can cry foul, as this is a normally game defined safe zone and as such players would expect consistency in their game world in regards to safety.

Other than that, with no warning, what about some guy who runs vendor who recalls right into one of those things and get attacked right off the bat and loses everything? His fault too?

Yeah, sadly these invasions have a tendency to ruin gathering points. Trinsic (at least on Europa) was a hotspot for people meeting and gathering, after the Trinsic invasion (fun as it was), Trinsic never returned to its former glory.

Luna is in less danger, as it has vendors drawing people in anyway.

But still, I find the spawn rather pointless. Why not have it some interesting spot out in the wild or in an old lands dungeon?

That could happen as well as often the char used to run a vendor will be a defenceless crafter type char with bad armour and no defense skills and those things move at paragon speed.

*laughs* you are not very good rules lawyer... if something changes in game it is up to you to notice it. Just saying. If you are AFK you have no rights to recourse. Hell, if you are "at the wheel" you have little.

The OP was trying to help. I get that. Just know if you are AFK and the environment changes, it is your problem.

That is still a whole different discussion. The main question is whether its against the rules or not. It isn't.

Its as much a problem as anything else is.

Its as much a problem if you're attended and the devs throw a hundred Harrowers in the middle of a safe zone where people trade and run business actively.

Both are bad business practices in the long run.

Its not against the rules to leave a char afk for a short time, its against rules to be active (training, crafting, etc) and not at the keyboard (to a certain point of course, if ya do Make Max while crafting and get up to use the bathroom thats not unattended really).
If your afk sittin at luna for more then the amount of time it takes for body to decay, well then thats your problem, plain and simple. Yes original idea of post was to warn people, yet it got derailed like so many others by certain people who have to defend every claim of scripting/macroing. bleh whateva.
All that needs to be said is, its a game, you dont like dieing while not playing it, well then LOG OUT. Gotta wait for someone? go somewhere completely neutral, anyone who plays uo right now should know that anything can happen in any city at any time. Set up a meeting at New Haven maybe, theres never any trouble there. You wanna sit idle and chat with people? goto your house and hide, you dont need skill to hide at home. You gotta be away from the computer for a bit? again, goto your house and hide. this is day one stuff people seriously. I guess we cant have invasions anymore cuz people wanna pay 13 bux a month to sit afk safely in public.

flame war much?

It is frustrating when you die when you are afk in what you think is a safe location and lose everything not insured in your pack.
It's a risk you take for being afk anywhere.

But to flame anyone over banksitting is pretty petty and then to argue over the reasons they are there in the first place is even worse.

They pay to play the game and play it as they see fit. If they are killing time, burning counts, answering the door, going to the restroom, etc etc thats their choice and none of that has any affect on any of you.

The only concern any of you should have about them being afk should be if they are scripting while doing so.

I think recalling into a lag zone is bad however if you are logged in you should play and not be sitting around taking up bandwidth. I still say don't be afk or take precautions or pay the price. It's not part of the game to be afk. How does this add to playing UO? Do people still bank sit to work off murder counts? What reason could there be to being afk? It only takes a couple clicks to log out.

Ignoring the AFK side if this, then, since it's something people aren't going to see eye-to-eye on...
There should be safe areas, to trade, to relax, to mingle... Or to generalise, to take part in the parts of the game that don't involve beating the stuffing out of monsters or plugging away by yourself.

To be blunt, they already ****ed up West Brit Bank on the shards that were still using it, with invasions.
PvM came to a place people went to avoid PvM, so people left, and didn't come back.

Blah blah blah, screw the rules lawyering, if you don't want anything bad to happen to your character while you're not sitting at the computer to control it, then LOG OUT. It really is that simple.

How many stories have we had over the years about the rules being rather different from one GM to the next? Do you really trust a GM to follow YOUR interpretation? If not, then either be able to attend to your character or log out.

Since the invasions drove players from WBB (circa Winter 2008), many players have called for a catalyst to revive WBB sitting. Moreover, many more players have fantasized about the destruction of Luna, again favoring WBB as the hub of UO community.

Isn't an event like this what some people have hoped for?

They gave a catalyst, with the WBB renovations.
That didn't work, because people don't just up and move on a whim. It took an invasion making WBB unsittable for a prolonged period to solidify Luna's position as primary.

If this is an attempt to push people back to WBB by forcing people away from Luna, then it's terrible.
Far worse than simply not considering that people need a peaceful place to enjoy other aspects of the game.
Attempting to enact change through destruction of the thing you want to change is about the worst way to go about it.

I always liked the East Brit bank better... at least back pre-Trammel on LS it was active... deader than dead now though... and it has the room for a "golem pit".

LS WBB does get some traffic though thanks to the circle available there... usually get a few calls per night for circles.
