I just found a bag in the Cavern of Discarded with five old (no longer spawning) items in it - four of the items all have the Bless spell with +10 bonuses like the Sash has. I'm especially interested in the boots and sash.

My question, do the bonuses activate only with the Bless spell and will the item bonuses stop once it runs out of charges?

I don't think these work anymore, either that or the charges go real fast.

it activates as soon as you put it on, yes it quits applying when out of uses.non rechargeable.
I still have a few as well (bless, protection, invis, nightsight, teleport, etc). it will auto cast when a spell wears off.
Think even have a curse one - makes neg. stats - never quite understood that one

When you equip the item it will use one charge and you get the bonus in str, dex, int for a while, not sure but about 2 or 3 minutes, when the charge expires another charge will be used, when the item runs out of charges no more bonus so it becomes useles and I think you cant imbue those items :(

Ahh well... wish the bonuses were permanent. Just the same, they all have 90 chages (360 total), so if only 2 minutes each, that's still 12 hours total. May be best just to sell.

Thanks for the replies.

those are old school, a collector would buy them just for the nostalgia factor.

But if you think back to when those were 'loot', unless you had either an id wand or some other way of telling what you had got, they were just 'magic' and you only found out what it did by trying it on...

There WAS a short time when the bonus WAS permanent (after the AOS change), but (obviously) it has long since been "fixed".

Obviously someone decided they weren't worth the space they were taking up and they popped by chance into the Cavern.

About the only things I have left from those days itemwise are my teleport rings, but now they've become too awesome to use since they can no longer be replaced, so they just sit in a secure container.

Before AoS, items were showing as "magic items" and didn't show their properties. You needed to "item ID" them (either with the skill or by using a wand) to know their properties.

Those curse items were a bad surprise for those wanting to use "magic items" without identifying them first.

Edit : Sorry didn't read the entire thread and someone had already answered on that point.

There are still a lot of these items around. They're not particularly valuable, hence why they were thrown out in the first place I suppose. :p

Back in the day I use to have a full suit of the one that bounced things back: spell reflect with over 100 charges each piece... many an attacker was not happy if they tried. But that went the way of the dodo........ I think many of us older folks have a few pieces in our closet gathering dust... someone just cleaned out his closet is all.... have fun with them or do as we do.. save ah few trinkets of a fond past.

I'll buy them off ya..

*envisions adding them to his trinkets of a fondly remembered past*

Yeah, the invis items used to come in very handy because they could be used anywhere and anytime; never failed to cast or got interrupted. No matter what was about to bite your head off, just quicky take off the item then drop it back on and you were hidden. They're more like an ancient relic now of a long lost past. These types of magical items were fairly easy to come by and not too expensive to buy. They were the invis potions and smoke bombs of their day.

I'm not one to dwell too much on the past in UO (at least in comparison to some on here), but I do miss the quirks of the pre-AOS magic item system (yeah, UO had items back then, but you'd never know it the way some argue... but that's another debate :p ).

I miss having to identify your loot via the ID skill or ID wands/staves (I still have one of these stuffed away as well), I miss being able to on occasion get a piece that was exciting regardless of what you killed or in a treasure or SOS chest (even level 1).

As mentioned above, I've had a Magic Reflect item or two gained through a day's PvM save me from an ambush on occasion as well.

While I enjoy the added depth of the current system, there are a lot of little quirks that were lost in the process that would be nice to get back:

- IDing items
- Items with magical effects based on charges (also remember getting weapons that had Hit *Spell* as part of their features that worked on a number of charges instead of a % chance. Once the charges were used up, you had the base weapon (plus other mods) left which made you consider finding a new one with more charges
- 5-level tiered system
- Descriptive names
- Items with mods above and beyond base NPC/crafted were actually CALLED "a magic *whatever*"
- Quirky spell charges on some items (Invisibility, Teleport, etc)

I don't know if it's due to having played UO for over 13 years now (wow, kids that started Kindergarten when I started playing UO are now graduating High School... how's THAT for perspective?), or if it's due to the changes in the system or what, but at least for me, I no longer grab equipment from monster loot to look at the mods anymore... for me it's scrap value (resmelting or combining into "junk" BODs for a mass turn-in pull later on, or unraveling), not item value. Sure I drag home more crap numerically, but it doesn't seem the same. The items I do grab (metal armor and weapons) are really no different to me than farming other resources (mining, lumberjacking, imbuing ingredients, etc).

Heh. I do remember that. For a while I was running around with about 400 stat points. It was fun.
