I think Nyses may have a good list and know which titles are the rarest.

You may also want to check out this post Wilki made on 9/18/2009 confirming the range in rarity from "plain" to "first edition" and that some titles are indeed rarer than others: http://vboards.stratics.com/showpost.php?p=1411905&postcount=41.

For titles 11-16, I have seen "The Book of Administration," "The Book of Family" and "The Book of The Underworld," but haven't yet come across the same titles labeled as "Kodeks Benmontas," "Kodeks Xen" or "Kodeks Destermur." I have seen a "Kodeks Rit" but not "The Book of Ritual." I haven't yet seen a "Kodeks Benommani" or "The Book of Prosperity," or a "Kodeks Kir" or "The Book of Circles." So at this point I'm not sure if we actually have just 31 titles or if we have more like 37 if there are also exist "English" title equivalents of titles 11-16 in addition to their original gargoyle (??) titles.

I'm going to go through my books and, using the list below, substitute either an F, C, L, or P for a hyphen in the appropriate column to indicate which versions of that title I've acquired so far. Don't know if anyone else wants to do the same thing. Might be an easy way to spot at a glance which titles and versions are rarer than others?? (F = First Edition, C = Collector's Edition, L = Limited Edition, and P = plain/normal edition.) I'm using the "Code" tag around the list to try to make sure things stay lined up.

Just go to post #7 that has the clean list and cut and paste the list into your own message. Then either highlight the whole list and click on the little "#" icon where you see the other message formatting buttons to "wrap" the whole list or do it manually by inserting a "CODE" command (should be in the square brackets though) at the top of the list and a "/CODE" command (again, needs to be in square brackets) at the end of the list.

Once you have the clean list copied, just substitute appropriate letters on each line for the hyphens to indicate which versions of each title you have. I put the English titles near the top, alphabetically. (You normally ignore words like "A," "An" and "The" as the first word in a title when you're alphabetizing book titles.) Eventually if enough people post lists in the same format some brave soul can consolidate everything into one list so we can see more easily which titles and editions haven't been found yet.

For determining rarity, perhaps a more ambitious project would be to actually report how many copies you have of each title in each edition. To keep everything lined up though you'd have to go to double hyphens. I might just instead investigate setting up a spreadsheet on Google that people can add their info to and have it calculate totals. Give me a few days to play with that and I'll see if I can figure out something.

Ya know, I can't fully participate in this, as well as many other things, because I'm not "geared up" (note the WoW phrase!). I'm trying to get there.
I like the powergaming aspect in this quest sense, but the requirement to powergame to be able to participate is killin' me. I am not a powergamer. I cannot sit and bang on MOBs for hours on end, day after day. I wouldn't want to if I could, but I'm forced to do it anyways just to get to the point where I can play the way I want to and enjoy.

And no doubt, as soon as I get there, after months of playing the way I don't like and don't want to, UO will add yet another level of powergaming required to participate in the things I want to do. It really P'ss's me off, Devs.

On the off chance we'll actually be able to do something with these SOON (i.e., turn them in for something useful??), I've been stashing some of them on a boat. So far the bag only has about 40 books in it because I moved on to working on a different character on another shard who still has a little wiggle room left in her bank box for the books for now.

I hate doing the turn in for the broken vase quest because toggling those shards is such a pain and the reward almost always just doesn't feel worthwhile, but somehow I feel compelled to pick up the stupid broken shards every time they're in a corpse and save my poor crafter just a teeny bit of killing.

And somehow I just can't get all that motivated for the Percolem quests. He never seems to offer one that meshes with what I'd like to be killing at the moment for some other purpose (e.g., collecting resources or imbuing ingredients) and I can't see just doing the quests to get the books. Just not that into collecting rare stuff, I guess. Now if there was just some way to guarantee I could get more white pearls and amber out of either set of quests, maybe I'd be more motivated to do them!

Google Spreadsheet for the Axem/Percolem Quest Books

I set up a Google spreadsheet to try to start tracking this information. If you want me to add your information to the spreadsheet, just put it in this thread and I'll add it to the spreadsheet as time permits. Please don't send the info to me in a PM because my mailbox just isn't that big!!! LOL

What you'll want to post is how many you have of each edition of each title. If you want to use the list in post #7 and put a letter in the appropriate column to indicate the edition, I'll just assume you have 1 of that title/edition combination.

I have no way to confirm this, but it seems from anecdotal evidence that the higher quest.. ie Untranslated tome and Tier 3 Percolum quests tend to drop more collectors/ltd etc editions. I do like doing the Maddening Horror quest 1-3 times a week... loot to unravel, a relic frag, a high end book 10k in gold and 3-5 ml gems.. not too bad!

This is a combination of collecting from the museum and explorer quest. I don't know if things changed but seems after doing many and at least every day - The rare editions show up more often. If I change up to character not done any wont see any editions in 15. Where as my main quester gets 1 in 4.

I'm also wondering if it's possible that the "rarity sequence" is actually plain; collector's edition; limited edition; first edition? It seems like more people have collector's editions than limited editions.

I do think you are right on the rarity of class of book... at least that's how it's been working for me, and I see the same pattern in the info supplied this far.

My list/experience is the rarety goes Black-Orange-White. White books like the Underworld - Treaties - Plant Lore I have gotten 5+ of. At least 10 other white titles I have gotten doubles of. Of course have to remember that the games RNG hates me. The second Black book I got was a double.
