Attended macro for magery gain problems

I just returned to the game and started a new character and have a 100 LRC suite and a mage weapon.. So i use UOA and click record, then click fireball for instance and click an inanimate object, then pres stop. set the macro to a key and hold it and it doesnt seem to work. I have to press it each time. Is there any way to get around this or is this something UO changed recently.
