omg MALICE did you start this thread back up????
I'm sitting here in shock because at first I thought someone had Goodmans account infor and posting under him, until I go back and check the dates on the post. And now after reading the post he made, Im just in tears.
*I still to this day miss him so much*
And I hold one his houses he did and as long as I have the dollars, I will continue to hold it, for he was my friend and it is a peace of him I keep in the virtual world.
Anyways, thanks because now I can log Goodmans post that I had not read before.

I know the feeling Dor. I had been watching over Calla's place on Sonoma for a little over 2 yrs. When our PC crashed we lost her icq and had no way to contact her. When the changes came where a friend could lock an item down in your house I left a book and a rune with my number, one of her other friends just happen to see it and passed me her email address. Well I email her and found out that she was not coming back to UO, due to real life but wanted to pass her house on to someone and not let it fall. Her's was an old account with 4 homes, one on Sonoma, one on LS, two on Baja. She did not have the CD for the game any longer, but she did pay for another month on her account and pass me the account name and password with instruction I was to pass the houses to those in game.

Her Sonoma home (which was her favor) went as a grand prize for contest this week, which OTE sponsor for me. Her two homes on Baja I made it a race for them posting a picture of locations and the first person to get there won the house. It was a close race for one of the homes, where I had two people arrive within seconds of each other. The 2nd person took off for the 2nd house which he did get to.

Her Stone shop on LS no one wanted, but I was able to tell a guild that lived near there that it would fall soon and when it did all items would be up for grabs. I have Calla's roses at my Malas home set up as she had them set up in her bedroom. When I found a rune to the Y in her book I assume you knew her and brought her over to say bye as well. If you like to reach her do let me know I PM you the email address.

Calla if you every read this, I will miss you sister and I hope with all my heart that someday you can come back to us. But if you never do, then I wish that the angels above watch over you always.

I know what you mean.

About all I have done for the past month or six weeks is log on to get a GGS gain once in a while. I found a windows version of Steel Panthers and I have been playing that a whole lot more than UO.

When I started playing UO back in early 2000, I posted on the old rec.games.computer.ultima.online newsgroup and had many friends there. I posted one of my newbie questions as a little story. Even though it was a fairly crude lunch hour quick and dirty effort people there liked it. I posted many stories of my own adventures and shared events in the group. - although I have not posted any new ones for a couple years. A friend had collected the stories on her web site. Last week I found out that the site is gone now. That really got me thinking about all the good times back in the "old days".

rgcuo is all but empty now but I had always wanted to clean up the old stories and make them better. I was thinking that maybe I should re-write the stories and make my own web site. I was thinking that maybe going back over those old adventures might rekindle the magic a bit. I don't know...

P.S.
Thanks to Grifty for unlocking the thread.

Dor, I hear you... But let me add a reflection.

People always come and go, that's no surprise. What it _really_ depresses me, is NOT that some friends are leaving (there always will be someone leaving, even some veteran) or that historical places are disappearing from the game, but that there is no will or interest to REPLACE them in any way.

The real sadness is not when people die, but when they leave no children... The sense of community went the way of the dodo, and has been substituted by the "I got l00t!!" mentality. Sure, there are still communities, hard-core RPers, etc, but they are getting smaller and smaller, and I didn't join this game just to waste half of my time simply looking for them, nor to see them leave, nor to be forced to overhear wherever I go "kewldood" stuff....

The mentality is unavoidable at this point. Mass media, sports figures, musicians.. From every direction, the younger generation is being fed this fast-paced, must have, me me me attitude.

I try not to dwell on much that has gone from UO, because I like to enjoy what there is of it now.(bugs excluded hehe) But sometimes you walk past a building, see someone with a similar-familiar name, or just look in your bank and find something.. that reminds you of things that made your UO life something to remember.

Friends made doing repairs at the brit west smithy.
Running with guildmates in assaults on the red guilds loitering at the brit xroads.
Smuggling ostards out of T2A.

Seeing trammel for the first time and thinking "I may get a house at last!"
-being telestormed all over heck and back when housing there opened.

When a PK might rez you after a battle to say "good fight" rather than rezkill.

About 2 years ago I posted a rather lengthy story on here about a lonely little 7x7 house that had fallen on dagger island. It was rather sad and at the time I half expected lame responces but instead got so many that brought back memories of things long past... *sigh* another thing lost to time.

These games are a wonderful avenue for people like myself who can't so much as go outside, let alone go someplace to see people and make acquaintences. But we have to suffer the knowledge that any friendships we make here are likely to be short-lived. People move on to new games, lose access for one reason or another, etc. And a friendship built on the common grounds in a game diminishes, slowly but profoundly, over time once that commonality is lost.

Maybe one day someone will make THE GAME. One so detailed, so powerful, and so advanced that nobody will ever have a reason to play another, and where things are constantly fixed / updated so it never gets dull, and there are GMs on staff to help with problems 24/7.....

hmm...

Well I can dream can't I?

I'm always amazed by players who have been around for 5+ years. I'm coming up on 36 months here, and I'm stuck in a major rut... haven't even felt like logging in more than once or twice a week. All of my friends from back when I started have left the game, and the player-run projects I've involved myself in recently have either fizzled out or grown too big for my tastes. Building characters has become boring... PvP feels like a waste of time... I found that I don't even care about phase 3 or all the collapsing houses, and hunting for these things was always one of my favorite parts of the game.
&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;I know it's me, and not the game that's the problem here, so I cut my UO accounts back down to one, passed on my house and most of my belongings, and started an account on another MMORPG. I'm hoping that by the time I burn myself out on that one, my UO addiction might be ready to come back.

Your moving to WoW airn't you? Me Too! Everyone's moving to WoW. Once you play WoW it's hard to want to go back to uo. Only reason I'm still playing uo alittle bit is because of all the hours I put into uo collecting items and stuff. I give uo another 6 months and if nothing happens I'll cash in my account in ebay. I'm just hoping uo does something to make players want to play uo like WoW is. #1 reason people go to WoW is there's no lag in WoW. You can have over 20+ people on your screen casting spell and fighting and won't get any lag with cable and a decent computer. With the same computer if you have 6 people on your screen, your gonna lag a bunch. I dunno why better grahics+more people on WoW would lag less then bad grahics and fewer people in UO

Yes I started it up ,
I found it to be intersting as it somewhat related to how I feel about UO today , Back when this thread first started I was just about a 3 year vet having so much fun in this game , pulling all nighters just to gm poison or get my last few points to gm lockpicking , or maybe getting chased all around fel on my thief .so much has changed , so many of the people I used to play with or hang out at IDOCS with pretty much gone now to WOW or other games , I never went to WOW because I had so much time invested in UO , to me wasn;t worth starting over.Right now I see this game as theres something missing , sure theres lots to do and alot of fun things to do.But a major piece of the pie is missing , maybe i'm looking for the next UO Dev project to be good and not lame , or for my friends to come back , It's like a broken marriage ( lack of better comparison). UO lost something for me right around AOS ( i'm not talking about content changes).

Yes, I get sad from time to time missing all my friends that have departed. I find it harder making friends with the *new* mindset of players that are now coming into the game, so I tend to solo or do more crafting and skill building than anything. I am thankful I do have those good memories of friends from long ago though.

I have not had the will or desire to log into UO in the last couple of month, this constant sword hanging over our heads of changes which so far doesn't look promising at all and no fixes to any glaring issues in sight either.

Just no fun, and up until a couple of month ago I had been playing many hours each day ever since UOML came out...now...nothing.

Very little reason to log in these days at all.

If 6 1/2 years is considered vet. Than I am one. My love for UO is not based on how many friends I have. I do have friends though which are very, very dear to me. Some stayed, some left, some have come back. My love for UO is UO in itself. I love the gameplay.

Over the years I now have 3 account, 15 chars. I got them because I always wanted to make all classic templates. So as UO grew and got more skills, I got more chars. That means I now have always loads to to. On top of all the chars, I have loads of vendor which are all selling everything but arties and ressources. I sell craftable stuff, gardening stuff etc., so that keeps me well busy.

I have never got enough time in UO as I work loads of hours every day. I never get lonely or bored. The friends I made that do not play anymore, I still talk over icq. The ones that still play, I sometimes meet and we hunt together and otherwise we talk over icq.

So I never get down, never are sad that poeple have left. Because my own playstyle is such that I can play with or without my friends. Also, I like making new friends as well. So many people play UO, its easy to make new friend. It don't mean you will give up your old friends. It's just like rl, some friends stay, some got and some new one come along.

I love UO and every second I have time to log in

Sounds nice. I wish I could too. I have also a well established presence in UO now, characters and houses on multiple accounts on many shards.

But on my Home Shard, Drachenfels, the world gets emptier and emptier. Already last year I lost my best ingame friend - I purchased her stripped account for a lot of money back on Ebay later from somebody just for memories.
Well organized guilds with up to 100 members (I was one of them) left nearly completely. Houses fall and never get replaced (or only for short time to secure the loot), looted by ever the same few players. GMs do nothing to help saving little memories like a guildstone in a decaying house.

This week I found that a castle is going to decay owned by another good ingame friend due to some financial shortages. It was hard enough to get in touch with her before the decay finished and to get a GTC for her account on my budget to have the castle not to fall (and a guild stone with it). I even upgraded her account to ML to get her more interested in game again.

The German community on Origin, established with the UOB guild, is nearly not present now. The last member besides me logged in nearly 3 weeks ago. Ok not such a wonder with all the lag lately - but the community castle there stands unused all the time.

Promised things like vet rewards for 6, 7, 8 years of active accounts are delayed until they are not necessary any more. There is no trend visible, that some of the most requested changes are coming - like a new state of the art 3D client, intense marketing not only involving current players, more flexibility with housing etc.

And check the number of readers on Stratics or the number of postings here and in other boards - the decrease is remarkable.

I wish I could close my eyes - but I can't. And so yes - there is more and more upcoming sadness. Even if I still love UO and not did purchase WoW after the guest pass ended.

Aye - the dropoff in posts is significant for sure. EA's 30 day house decay is going to accelerate the departure of vets and I suspect sometime around August, EA will reassess the viability of UO as a going concern. Hopefully they won't pull the plug (like E&amp;B and MCO) but at least make some effort to sell it off.

Of the 2 dozen or so "close friends" I've had in UO, only 3 still plays, and of those 3 one logs in once a week and another is playing a different shard now. Makes it hard for me to keep my interest.

I am German but play on Europa. Drachenfels surely is extremly empty, I got a char there as well and UOB Posts nearly non existant. I don't post there often anymore.

You should come over to Europe, or just play more often there if you already got a char there. I know its hard because of memories etc. But you sound like you just need some company and some news friends. Europa is a fun shard still and quite populated. I am sure you will have more fun again

On that note, I remember hearing pleas for periodic shard-wipes but EA hasn't decided to make the event a reality. If characters could remain but all gold/checks are wiped, all houses nuked and all but blessed or in-pack (non-gold) items are retained. That might re-invigorate the economy and wipe out all the farmers in one stroke.

I feel the same way, Dor. On Pacific all the old landmark places are falling. The tower with the small house on top - just outside Skara- gone. Nearly all the miners houses that snaked their way around the Trinsics Mountains have gone.
Very, very occasionaly I come across an old face/name - oh! the joy !
I keep telling myself that when a certain house on Pacific falls then it's time for me to leave. Sadly the house sign has recently changed to "Farewell UO and thanks for everything". I am not sure I will leave yet as I do still love this game, but I do go through times of grieving for what it was. The loss of friends is the greatest sadness of all.

You're not alone, Dor. I'm just not interested in UO anymore. Thinking of closing all the accounts buy my main. I don't hate the game by any means, I just miss what once was and that magic that used to be UO. It's not just friends who have moved on, and I've made new friends that are great, it's the game itself. Then again, maybe I'm just getting to a point where I know I'll be busy and UO won't be a priority or even on the list of things to try and fit in.

What an odd thread! I too just only noticed that this thread is a bazillion years old :p

I remember when I first started on Pacific, after a short bout with "The Elders" on GL, I switched shards and became a member in the Sons of Steel. I had two very good friends in that guild...Fergus McElroy(sp?) and Thorn. They both left to play EQ circa 1999

After that I've been pretty much solo for years. Until recently, around the time of ML and just prior, I've met a great bunch of folks, actually from right here in the UHall, to hunt with. Its strange, but then my life usually has been; but what all the other vets had and have lost, I seem to have never had, but just recently gained. Make any sense?

UO aint dead yet, but they need to quit blowin smoke and actually light a fire.

I've seen some good trends lately with the targeting and buff systems. BOTH are great systems once they got the bugs worked out. Give them a try. I've even given up 3D and went back to 2D partially because of them.

Watching a good friend's house fall is just horribly depressing. I've done it several times, and I imagine I will have to again.

Since smart houseowners don't leave their possessions open to folks deemed with just 'friend' status.. things that I just KNOW they'd want salvaged go into the general rubble.

It takes seemingly forever for a house you don't want to fall, to vanish into oblivion.

If it helps any, just yesterday, I caught sight of a friend whose house fell.. now all I have to do is catch up with him. It will bring a smile to see a name you were sure was gone forever show up on screen. Once in a great while they DO come back.

I have made friends, seen em come n go, most come back. They are everyday people with real lives and real problems. Actually 2 just returned and brought in a nephew to boot. Did I miss them?....yeah sure, but not enough to be so expressive, I mean hell, it's a game on my computer, it's not like I live on this thing.

Remember the only thing that stays the same is change. This game can be addictive and if it depresses you, back off. The brain releases a chemical for every emtion we have, and these are released to the same neurotransmitters, that say, a junky has when he uses a drug, and becomes addicted. Ever see a RL friend thats almost always happy and upbeat??

My info comes from a docu-fiction DVD called "What the BLEEP do we really know"....very informative.

Hang in there.

You are depressed because you still believe there is hope. Many of us have simply conceded that no hope remains and found it quite liberating. Lost at sea and captain is both clueless and too weak to execute when a clue is stumbled upon. I used to PvP and PvM both. Just paying to see the end at this point. Like slowing down to see a freeway accident.

I know what you mean. I closed my account some days ago, still got a few days left during which I log in, camp the PvP spots and watch the gimps having a go. After 5' I log out completely disgusted.

I am not interested in UO's PvM, mini-bosses, or Doom.
I am not interested in pointless crafting and resource gathering.

Here's what I realized.

UO's Unreal Tournament under a mask. Because the skills are your weapons on a gimplate.

In Unreal you have the Rocket Launcher, the Sniper Rifle, the Shock Rifle.. available to everyone. Just like Deathstrike, Holy Light, Poison and so on in UO.

In Unreal you run around like a maniac, dying fast and killing fast. The same stands for UO, assuming you are a gimp and going against gimps. Because any "normal" template is skewered like there's no tomorrow.

In Unreal you have vehicles in certain modes, and when you are against someone on foot you usually win. In UO this translates in "using the dismount bug to pwn noobs on foot and disarmed" and it happens at Unreal's fast pace like everything mentioned.

In Unreal you have health packs- in UO you have potions. Only in UO it's worse because you have over 50 and they are not lying around for the fastest to pick up. They are on you.

I could go on, but to me UO is a 2D Unreal Tournament version full of cheats, scams, exploits, gimps and well.. the typical 12 year old kids.

It's not an RPG and by no means is it what I used to love and enjoy. PvP takes no skill, and items talk for you. Just like guns talk in Unreal, only ironically you need skill and practice there unlike UO.. Heh.

And before you say people cheat in Unreal, think LAN games. And UO cheats available. And scripts.

Just a shame.

I am depressed with UO for another reason and pretty sure I have decided to close my account and leave the game for good over this matter. I've played honestly and worked hard to to get where all my chars stand in the game, only to sit back and watch scriptors/exploiters/dupers surpass what Ive accomplished in 5 years, they can do it 2 weeks. Visit Sonoma shard one day, trammel Prism of Light dungeon and see how many of the same characters' names you see day/night...24/7. I have repeatedly reported these chars to GMs' to have finally been told by GM Sorif and GM Argain to quit my annoying paging and IF I page one more time, action would be taken against MY account. I give up... I truly believe in 2 years or less UO will fail to exist and I refuse to waste my time (and RL money) on a game that once intrigued me to now only upset me everytime I log in and see the same char names scripting away at places/dungeons I used to like hunting at. IF EA cared about the future of UO, they would work on fixing bugs/exploits/cheats/dupes. I don't see this happening any time soon and silly quests like INU just don't make up for the time I used to enjoy playing the game. The Inu quest held a small promise of some fun, and even that is now on "so called hold" for a week. Sad to leave but hopeful I'll find a new game I once enjoyed as much as UO.

This thread is emo. I like UO and I could care less what scriptors do. They cheat so to me they accomplished nothing with their time but be losers. A new player one week old has more accomplishments than a scriptor three years old.

I understand your frustration, but I wouldn't push that one. A while back (before my last "break") some ex-guildmates and I tracked what appeared to be a nice little farming operation, with the appearance that they were going full-bore 24/7. We believe this, because some of my friends lived in different timezones (Europe, Japan, Korea, Australia, plus the states), and between us we were able to check dozens of times a day for several days straight, and either the person(s) running the account had incredible stamina to be up for almost a week with no sleep or it was the scripters/farmers.

We compiled a list of times observed, screenshots, etc., sent it to the proper EA folks, heard nothing. Paged on it after two weeks (they were still doing it when we checked on them), a GM appeared, gave the "it's being looked into" answer, left. A month later, the "operation" was still going on, we paged again, and a GM told us not to page on it again and was almost rude and threatening. It was the same GM that we got the first time (I don't remember the name, I'd have to talk to one of my friends, but we heard they were fired), and unfortunately I didn't take screenshots - I was on my way towards taking a break from UO and just not very enthusiastic.

If I was a conspiracy theorist, I would have said the GMs were in on it or something fishy was going on, but this wasn't exactly an operation that was hidden.

One of my friends poked around Google a lot and came to the conclusion that EA didn't care about the farmers as long as somebody was sitting there at a keyboard (even if they were running a dozen machines or whatever), because they felt that ebay gold was good for UO. It's a very cynical attitude, and while I see their point, I didn't agree with it, because it can have bad effects in regards to the in-game economy, which can ruin the experience for certain playstyles.

Anyways, I wouldn't push about any farming, at least in-game. Mention it here or on other UO sites, but I wouldn't push EA directly on the issue - your story kind of matches up to our's, at least in regards to how the GM(s) responded.

Usually I'd agree, but these characters are using script loot and script targeting because I guarantee you no one can target those creatures faster than their scripts can. It's more than "farming gold".. it is script farming gold and they have destroyed the game I once enjoyed playing... *shrugs* UO will never hold the glory and fun it had in the past. EA quit caring, now the players are not caring either. For those that say oh I don't care about scriptors... you will care when one day you see that message saying.. UO will be shutting down... It will happen, just a matter of time and that time is not far off.

Macuo,

Interesting point I never thought of. You know you have to really wonder as well when all the new "staff" came on board a few months ago, the creative editor (or whatever he called himself) gave assurances (lol) that the GM responses are closely monitored, blah blah....and I still do not show this to be the case.

As for the scripting and EBAYing, my opinion is well known and not very popular. I consider it cheating and unfair game play. Like many here on this thread, I have seriously thought about closing my account as well. Nothing to do, hardly anyone around, and well, with all of the cheating going on, tends to turn one off.

From EA's standpoint even farmers and bot runners have to pay the monthly subs for each one of their myriad accounts so maybe that constitutes a major portion of the critical mass required to keep UO afloat? If the alternative is to shut down UO ... who's to say they are wrong?

I have to agree with the concensus here - UO just isn't a "magical" experience that it once was. I've been through the same cycle with E&amp;B and SWG. With other exciting options out there drawing folks away, sure its sad but hardly surprising

[/ QUOTE ] EA could easily tell whose script-farming - this kind of thing has been going on years. You can go into Google and find the script sites, and you can read their posta nd how-tos. Nothing anybody says can convince me that EA doesn't know about them, because I know they could easily tell if an account is active for a large portion of the day (if not all day).

You are right, EA does not seem to care about this aspect of things - it's too hard for them to comprehend on paper (without seeing the effects in-game), or they want to keep a hands-off approach to the economy.<blockquote><hr>

[/ QUOTE ]When the Tram land rush came about, I had friends who were sharing small houses with three and four other people, who couldn't wait to get their own place. Bam, the land rush happens, and within a week literally dozens and dozens of large houses that were placed just on our shard were up on ebay. The boards were full of people furious that they ended up with small houses while the ebayers were making thousands. EA didn't take a stance on it then. I knew people that quit over that, because they were like "I've been stuck sharing a small with a couple of people for a year and a half, and I get warped and telestormed to hell and back and end up with a small while some schmuck two screens over has his house on e-bay within days".

They've killed the economy. They introduce gold into the economy at an unnatural rate. You end up with inflation which hurts many players. The only good thing, is that the market is so glutted with gold now, that it's becoming unprofitable for the farmers, and they are dumping gold as fast as they can - everybody thought the price would rise after the bannings, but if anything the wholesalers are wanting out of UO, and are dumping it on the market big time.

I've heard some things about some guilds and GMs in the past...I think it's in the current management's best interest to keep a lid on any wrongdoings by GMs

As for the scripting and EBAYing, my opinion is well known and not very popular. I consider it cheating and unfair game play.

[/ QUOTE ] Ask any GM or dev team member the following question: "If I do something outside of the game that impacts my characters in a beneficial manner inside the game, is it illegal?" and the answer would probably be yes. Then ask them "would you like to know where I found the ability to do this?" If they say "yes", then point them to e-bay

I have to agree with the concensus here - UO just isn't a "magical" experience that it once was. I've been through the same cycle with E&amp;B and SWG. With other exciting options out there drawing folks away, sure its sad but hardly surprising

[/ QUOTE ] I think any of us that's been around for more than a few years is locked in a cycle - whether it's a SWG kick or a WoW kick, and eventually we get bored and come back to UO, which has changed very little in some ways.

At this point you have to create your own magic, if you will. You have to create your own events and establishments.

That's kind of annoying but doesn't bother me too much. I have no problems getting resources or advancing skills but I do have some sympathy for folks that want to compete at high levels with good gear but simply don't have the hours to play to get there or would rather spend the hours interacting with other players. They can tap into the farmed resource pool relatively cheaply and then compete and/or use their time more effectively.

What is sad is letting minor issues affect enjoyment of the game itself - there's still a lot to do, there's still places to explore or meet other players but at the end of the day it's simply entertainment and if you no longer derive enjoyment from doing it ... stop.

Im going to kinda skip out on the Scripts part of this thread and move back to the depression section that it started out as. (Hope no one gets mad)

I have played from 1997-now and still plan to stick around. I am from Chesapeake which has alot of history and good times. The SillyHood was what got me to even want to play this game. My friend Themicles was in that guild and I use to watch him play and laugh and just watching the funny things they did. *NI!* is still my most favorite saying.

I try not to go back to the past to much because I look at what "was" and what "is" and its not the same game. I hung around PaxLair city which still stands. I came back to give what I took for granted all those years ago. One thing I did was be a major financial backing for PaxOku city and now run it. What I try to do for the city is have monuments for Paxlair citizens, friends and guilds. Its one of the only things that keep me sain. If you miss those old friends and old times trust me there are a good number of old timers left. So the friends ive surrounded myself with are the ones that play the same I do and beleive in the things I do.....I think its the only thing that keeps me sain LoL.

So always honor the past when building new things or in my case new player run citys *smiles* *Tips hat*

Yea alot of the people I used to play with are all gone , a select few still play , But my current work schedule doesn't agree with play time
, When I first started after about a week I was bored and ready to quit , then I met someone on LS forget his name ( Wang something or another) , he was great showed me how to do so much help me out , and in many ways kept me here 5 plus years , now I find myself in that , what do I do now , the INU plot sorta got me back , but now that on hiatus also..
