[Tailoring] Aquiring Cloth

I just started working tailoring, and I've found myself having to buy cloth from the NPCs. Seems a little odd to have to buy the cloth from them to fill BODS they hand out. I read that some people go kill brigands for their clothes, but the flow of cloth from that is SLOW...and when the salvage bag dumps the cloth in my bag as separate little clumps because they are all different colors I get annoyed.


So what do you more experienced tailors do? Sheer sheep? Buy from players?

I shear sheep and also buy from npcs! also I use the the lower reward cloths from the bods!

I find cotton to be a good source for cloth material. Each bale of cotton give 6 threads (which ends up being 1.2 bolts of cloth per bale). It automatically stacks with itself when you are spinning it, unlike wool (which is very frustrating). The downside to cotton is that you have to wait for it to respawn, and it is easy to get ahead of, where as you would not run into this problem gathering wool.

I do the same thing that Storm does. I buy it from npcs and use the bod reward cloth. The bod reward cloth can be "undyed" or dyed the same color and combined.

If you need to use a lot of cloth, buying NPC may be the only practical option. Making cloth from wool or cotton was more popular 10 years ago when 100k gp was a lot. Now that is pocket change for many players and can give you 100k cloth.

Meanwhile, making cloth from raw material can be quite fun. I did that for quite a while when I started playing UO and one of the best way to make gold at that time was to make fancy shirts and sell them to NPC. Sometimes players have to take turns to use the spinning wheel at the Brit tailor shop.

My tailor is also a mage and has worked up the compassion virtue so have to gate every three days to keep it maxed out. If I don't have other things to do after gating an npc I go to Haven and do the "Up in the air" quest which is to kill 10 sheep. So I shear them first kill them and repeat it once and then gate the next one and the reward for the quest is some items like bows or jewelry and I take those home to unravel or imbue with my imbuer. Three things done at the same time I get wool get items to imbue/unravel and gain in compassion


eta if you want to make the cloth all the same color get a unused dye tub and use it on all the clothing items or cloth to make them all plain.

This is what I would do shear sheep........sell the wool to npc. That's one way to defy some the cost of cloth. Wool sells for about 61 gps.
A dye tub is a must when doing tailoring bods. You can combine all cloth which is the same color.

Shear sheep, gather cotton, BoD reward cloth lvl 3 and below... sometimes buy from NPC's. Usually, the best (free) method is gathering cotton. The respawn is rather fast, and if you're that bored, or that much into the RP aspect of being a tailor, then the time is well spent.

Even a mediocre newbie character can farm up 100k in a week or two. In much cases an established character can get that within hours.

Just port to Fel tailor shops, buy bolts at 100gp each, and snip into the cloth. As a side bonus, you'll have a lesser chance of getting Carpal Tunnel.

If you do a lot of bods at once, buying cloth from NPC's can get expensive, and quickly. Gathering cloth from NPC kills is definitely not the way to do it in bulk, though. And while the wheel/loom is monotonous, saving over 1mil plus a month is never a bad thing.

If I don't feel like buying cloth from an NPC, I just take a character that needs to work on magery to the sheep pens in Yew and have the character shear the sheep and then use magery to kill them. When the respawn rate slows down too much at one pen, just move on to the next one of the pens and repeat until the character is getting overloaded. Recall home and spin and weave the wool into cloth. If you have your crafting area set up with three spinning wheels, the spinning process goes pretty quickly.
