Nice! I enjoy playing a version of stones on a 12 string acoustic guitar.
Can still remember the goosebumps from the early days of hearing it.

Yeees,

thank you.
Fantastic music and when I start listen on tube I noticed that one of the other UO songs had similarities with an extremely well known movie.

Eh for the last 8 years I've turned off UO's music so I could listen to my own. After listening to stones and a few others, I've turned it back on.

Takes me back, way back!

Well, this made me go searching for some .mp3s that I had made some years ago. Found them on a CD I'd burned as a backup in in 2003.

UO came with 2 soundfonts, one large and one small, and when you knew to load up the big soundfont into your sound card, the music quality was great.

And then, it was possible to find really huge, orchestral soundfonts and run the UO midis through those, and they came out quite well.

I recorded these MP3s around the year 2001.

Bucs Den - Fluid GM soundfont:

Sailing - Fluid GM soundfont:

Trinsic - - game's own, large soundfont:

I'd always felt that UO had some of the most amazing music in it (when you used the soundfont you were supposed to). At one point I had mastered up like 10 of the UO pieces in the way above, using the Fluid GM soundfont, just to have them to listen to (but atm I can only find these 4). I definitely made a face when I logged in in 2006 and noted that the music had changed.

Always find myself posting this UO music website...

Enjoy...

Roland LAPC-1/SCC-1 Ultima Digital Music Archive -- Ultima Online
I'm glad that site is there, but after listening to some of the pieces, I feel that the bigger of the 2 soundfonts that shipped with the game better represents the pieces than the Roland the web site is using. Don't forget that the cd-shipped soundfont is what the original company that made the music would have provided.

(And the Fluid GM soundfont shuts them both down for most of the pieces, imo =p but Trinsic was somewhat of an exception).

(I have that original game soundfont stowed on this CD that I found, and anyone who still has the original game's install CD has it too).

For example - compare trinsic with the game's-own-soundfont version embedded in my post above -
http://dor-lomin.com/archive/ultima/musicarchive/uo/mp3/trinsic.mp3 (this link is to the roland version). Mebbe you see what I mean.

I found quite a few renditions here - but, it'll be good to remember that the soundfonts used for these have been worked over on an individual basis by the guy who made the page (Dinaris Techarin). So, some of the pieces sound different from the original rendering, different in the sense that some of the instrument selections for passages are changed.

UO Stratics - Techarin's Music Hall

Also some of them have channel characteristics where one instrument tends to stay on one channel (left/right) (such as in Bucs Den starting at 00:20 to around 00:40). Obvious to hear and easy to see in Audacity if you open it up. That could be annoying for some listeners (it is for me, I prefer stuff like that mixed into both channels, but it's a personal preference).

THIS is interesting and worth the download.

It's a little project which was apparently put together by a game music industry pro who did a personal workover of the Ultima Online music with an ear toward a pre-Ultima-Online sound. The zipfile is packed to the brim with professional-sounding Ultima Online MP3s.

I can't tell you who the original, intended audience for this music collection was, but it was uploaded to its hosting site as a file which anyone in the world is allowed to download. I found it via google. So, there it is.

This is part of the text that comes with the zipfile... the author's installation instructions may or may not be valid (I have not tried them), but it makes an interesting read in any case.

Wait, what exactly is this? Ultima online was based on the original Ultima Series created by Lord British dating back to the early 80s. Much like the lore and history of Britannia, the music was a essential part of those games. Each town and location had a theme or reference in the world that would be played in every Ultima game year after year.

In 1997 Ultima Online was released by Orgins, the original development team of the series. Much like the past games, Ultima Online's soundtrack shared the musical history of the original Ultima games that came before. The songs were MIDI based, not mp3ed so in order to hear the music you would need a soundblaster or wavetable midi softsynth supported card.

What happened to the real original music? I work as a sound designer, audio director, song composer for many many AAA video game companies over the last 17 years (composing soundtracks to many games you guys have played). When EA picked up the intellectual property known as Ultima, they ended up hiring a new team to work on the development. As I have seen this before in my line of work, the new designer didn't seem connected to Ultimas long history of audio and well, decimated the soundtrack. Imagine watching Starwars and waiting for the Darth Vader theme to kick in, only to hear something else overdubbed. It just wouldn't sit right!
These are the installation instructions for it. I looked at my Classic Client installation and it seems that they apply to it and not the EC.

INSTALLATION:

1) Go into Ultima Online/music.
2) Rename your current "Digital" directory to Digitalold or something you would prefer.
3) Just copy the new "Digital" Directory from this zip into the music folder.
4) Thats it!

I believe the quoted installation process to be intended for the Classic Client. I don't immedietely see how to jam these MP3s into the EC (or know if it is possible).

Edit:

It looks like the ability to swap a different set of MP3s into the Enhanced Client is coming in a future version of Pinco's UI. A recent forum thread about it: http://vboards.stratics.com/uo-enhanced-client-discussion/254748-possible-change-music-ec.html .

Alright come on folks quit trying to hide it..... how many of you cried?

*raises hand*

For anyone that hasn't done so, I suggest you rename loginloop to stones so you can have it playing again when you login.

Music Ppl from this thread!!!!!

Be aware, in particular if you're using the Enhanced Client!

The latest version of Pinco's UI now creates a means where custom MP3s can be used by the game client. So I pretty much immedietely made a mod for this which restores our long-desired music to our music-starved ears.

It uses the Scott Lee MP3 realization I linked earlier in this thread.

I've made a release thread over on the Enhanced Client board.
http://vboards.stratics.com/uo-enha...rly-classic-client-music-addon-pincos-ui.html.

Stones is back as the login music!

The cities... back. The wandering wilderness music.. mostly back.

It's release version 1 anyway. Maybe more complete versions are coming later.

Firing up the EC client and hearing Stones, where it is supposed to be, is just like, OH YEAH...

It feels almost right again. The opening-chest intro screen would be nice. But having Stones back is like 9/10ths of that battle won.

(It's a small battle in the face of things, but it's good to get what you want now and then. Especially with something as personal and hard-to-take as the torn-out music score).

I'm hoping later versions of EC Playsound will be more configurable and, for example, I'll be able to put the rest of the wilderness-type music back in instead of being limited to 5 slots.
