roomie played the beta this past weekend, looked like a quest heavy star wars version of wow..

graphics looked half decent, not my style but im sure it will be initially popular.. for at least 6months...

Comp will handle the EC, but the old beast would never manage the long haul for SWKotR. I have heard nothing but good over the last two months and am very interested.

Nope... never been a big Star Wars fan, so it doesn't really hold any interest for me... that and I've never been a big "space gamer" either.

I'm hooked on UO, though I may start closing some accounts. I'd like to find a new MMO but, from my time here, I doubt I'll have anything to do with EA after UO.

Have seen/tried the beta. Too much of a themepark MMO for me, especially the "fighting" in space which is more like being on a roller coaster and shooting at stuff than actual space combat.

I hope it does well though. Warhammer crashing and burning didn't exactly help UO, and I dread what would happen if Star Wars crashes and burns.

This!

I think we should start a UO type guild thingy on SWTOR :p
So far a few LS'ers that are in....

Bounty/Disco Stu
CoBeS
Cap'n Zero
Wicked
Maybe blackmage
Cyrus
Wappy and his bro
Garreth
Jack Daniels
FuZz
Trixta II
Jaden Jinn
Virus
Kali Mondane
Anesthasia
Sithas

We did create a guild so anyone interested can go register now i guess. The release is a month away and i guess i'll pay for a vent.

Never been a big Star Wars fan. It's also likely not a sandbox. And the biggie, it's made by EA. The last gaurentees I won't play it. They're slowly managing to destroy UO as a fun game. One they got with a good player base and reputation from Origon Systems. What chance does a brand new game have with them? Answer, not much better, if any better, than that fabled snowball's chances.

As a long time UO fan... I am gonna let this slide. We will just discuss this. the second it is out of hand... we will be done.

I am.

Hoping EA views not just the success of WoW as something to aspire to have, but is also prepared to have the behind-the-scenes care it takes to actually pull it off.

Sure! No wait.

EA has always owned UO. Garriott even had to go to the head of EA to get some of the money to fund UO. I'm not defending EA - I'm not happy with how they've treated UO over the years, but EA has always owned UO.

And Tanivar, it's not a sandboxy game, not at all. It has a massive amount of content, but it's going to be a lot different if you are only used to sandbox MMOs.

There aren't that many sandbox games around - they are hard to do. If somebody needed a break from UO, Skyrim would probably be the best sandbox-style game to play, although it's single-player. And EA has Kingdom of Amalur coming up in a few months that will be sandbox-style (and turned into an MMO).

It has Todd McFarlane as one of the designers, for those of you who played UO in the early years :gee:

for those who want to try Star Wars, Massively.joystiq.com and MMORPG.com have a ton of keys to give away.

I would try the game if it was more like Star Wars Galaxies (as in more open) was, but SWTOR is too much like WoW (as in treadmill to max level, raid for gear) to interest me, sadly. A game isn't worth $15 a month IMO. It needs to be more fleshed out, or world like, to justify a subscription.

A theme park WoW clone in space, with Todd McFarlane on board and brought out by EA. No thanks.

Kinda thinking about trying it... but some of the earliest beta reviews are pretty disappointing.

I know EA owned Origon Systems but RG, other than the goofy player justice bit, definitely had different ideas & leanings than those at EA who took over had.

Most single player games are ring-in-your-nose-follow-the-set-path games & I've played others online. Why I rarely ever buy single player games anymore after running into UO. I like the variety of play available in UO. You can find something fun to do no matter what mood your in. Your not locked into some form of hack & slash. Sandboxy is the way to go. :)

Yes it's an EA game, as UO has always been as someone correctly stated. :) Other games are always in addition to, not instead of UO for me. Plus, it's Bioware behind it as a division of EA. I'm definitely gonna give this a go and keep it to the link Kelmo shared for SWTOR discussion.

What's the scoop? 2 ppl so far don't like him.
k, so far it looks like he's one of many names who worked on UO's Lord Blackthorne's Revenge expansion, which came out around 2002. Was one of 2 creature concept designers, and did the concepts for about 30 of the creatures that were introduced at that time, apparently mostly in Ilshnear.

I don't have much experience with Ultima BUT, I felt some of the areas in Ilsh had some creatures in it which somehow didn't feel right. Robot like things, kinda. Is it that sort of thing?

This was in the Lord Blackthorne's Revenge documentation:

New Creature Concepts:
Denis Loubet
Todd McFarlane

Incidently, saw Mesanna in that list, she's been around a while =p

External Lead Tester:
Bonnie "Mesanna" Davis

That's it exactly. It was a marketing gimmick to bring Todd McFarlane in and it was quite obvious he had no clue what UO was or what UO was about.

Ow :( marketing thing? sigh.

But yeah. Thinking about the whole thing, here... maybe he is a natural fit for SW:TOR. Some design ppl are more naturally able to do certain genres more succesfully than others, and if that's the case, one can't really fault them for it. Creativity is what it is and it doesn't always follow road signs.

Methinks whoever set up the mismatch or, didn't provide the right sorts of guidelines to contain the possible damage, would be the one to fault, not the hired talent, kinda.

I'm just biding my time until Guild Wars 2 comes out. With our guild limiting membership to 6k people for the release and we are less then 900 people away from that goal, I and the other officers of the guild, are going to have our hands full lol.

I'm a big Star Wars fan but the game is just not my thing. I hope it works well for the players that do try it. I saw some of it on G4tv and something really bothered me about it. May have been because it was some type of tutorial.

I guess they thought his comic book fans might come over to UO if he was involved or something.

I gave a wrong impression - McFarlane is involved with the artwork of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. And one good thing - there isn't any existing lore for McFarlane to screw with - it's a brand new game, plus R.A. Salvatore is designing the game universe and lore.

And the executive designer was the lead designer on Elder Scrolls Morrowind and Oblivion. It does have a lot going for it. It's being developed by a third party studio, but being released/pushed by EA this coming February.

It's being designed from the start to be turned into an MMORPG if the single-player game sells well. I guess you could consider it to be EA's version of Elder Scrolls Oblivion/Skyrim.

It's got a really nice website that gives you an idea of the lore:

Amalur: An Immersive Fantasy World

It makes me wish EA would push such an effort for Ultima/UO.

Only cool things about starwars are the first 3 movies and the 80's toys .
Im going back to Battleground europe (wwiiol ) in a few weeks when i get a new tower. I left it a few years ago because my aging computer couldnt run it anymore. Its gonna be nice to roam the country side in a tank and blow up some krauts again :p Gonna keep one of my UO aacounts opened though.

btw for those wanting a large playground, this one i think is unequaled. Half scale europe ( western ) no zones. You could walk it from e to w but it would take you days... hehe.

I don't know what you mean by "first three movies," there were only three movies.

Also the Lego sets are pretty cool although they threw in some non-Star Wars stuff under the Star Wars name, something about clones. Real janky.

There weren't any "first three movies", just reviews:

Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace

Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith

Warning: R-rated language and and a careful dissection of just how bad of a director Lucas became.

But getting back on topic, I really hope SWTOR works out as well as Kingdom of Amalur. It could really help UO and the other Mythic MMOs.

SW:TOR seems adult-ish themed to me (like the first star wars movies). If it is or becomes childish (like the later star wars movies) I don't think I could bear to stick around. If I cannot stand Kung Foo Panda, not much chance I can take a star wars equivalent of it.

I don't think I even went to see the latest star wars movie.. just liked the earlier ones I guess.

So yah. We'll be finding out how SW:TOR goes in this regard.

Isn't Skyrim first person though? Kingdoms of Amalur looks like it'll be third person, hm. The Destiny system looks pretty cool, too. Reminds me of something that could easily turn into a MOBA MMO. I'd have to look for a sweet third person iso to replace my UO addiction. Ideally a Dragon Age inspired MMO.

U mad that i posted this here or something?
kelmo was initially responding to people bashing EA, I think. just the nature of people to go OT.

like others have said, BioWare is a game changer. Dragon Age is arguably one of the best games ever made for its genre of play.

P.S. I agree about Dragon Age.. Totally awesome games.
