Any tips for moving to another shard?

Hello - I am seeking advice from anyone who's packed up and changed shards. What's a good strategy to use? I'm thinking to sell everything and just buy it all again on the new shard? Thanks in advance

Why not place your most valuable, and/or hard to replace items in your bank, in your backpack, and in a giant beetle, sell everything else, then use shard transfer token.

Come to Baja, an awesome, friendly and welcoming shard.

You can control up to 5 packies with 0 Tame/Lore. Each packie can hold 125 items and up to 1600 stones. So, full bankbox, full backpack and 5 full packies is 875 items per character. Put the heaviest stuff that is stackable in the bank or use commodity deeds.

Shelleybean, you can take quite a few items with you, so you might want to rethink your plan to buy everything on the new shard.

Bankbox: 125 to 150 items, depending on whether or not you've upgraded
Backpack: 125 items
Pack Animal 1: 125 items
Pack Animal 2: 125 items
Pack Animal 3: 125 items
Pack Animal 4: 125 items
Pack Animal 5: 125 items
Equipped Items: Whatever your character is wearing

That's somewhere between 875 and about 912 items per transferred character, depending on whether you have upgraded storage and what your character is wearing.

Obviously, in order to load up five pack animals, you must have all other pets your character owns safely tucked away in the stable. The pack animals can be ones you just purchased, they do not have to be bonded. You will be able to unload them one at a time within one week after you arrive on the new shard. In the meantime, they sit in a special moving crate. Don't worry about taking them out until you have your new house ready.

It's been a while since I've done a character transfer, but it usually only takes about 20 minutes to go through. I would try to avoid doing it within the hour before either the old or the new server goes down for maintenance.

Red characters always "land" at the Buc's Den healer. Blue characters land at various inns in Trammel.

Your character is hidden and naked when you arrive. While you're standing there hidden, you can open your transfer crate and find the container that has the items you had in your backpack and also the container with your equipped items. You do NOT have to remove everything from your backpack container in the transfer crate when you arrive. I usually just move to my actual backpack a few rune books, spell book/chiv book, and whatever else I normally carry. The rest of the items that I put in my backpack just to make the transfer stay in the transfer crate until I'm somewhere safe. As mentioned above, you have a week to get them out of the transfer crate. After that they go poof. (Which can be a handy way to get quest items out of your backpack that you never got around to paging about for removal. Just don't ever take them out of the transfer crate!)

Be sure you check first to make sure you have enough empty character slots on the new shard to handle the number of characters you will be transferring. Be sure to tell the pack animals to follow you before you start the transfer. Take your time going through the character transfer gump so you don't make a mistake. You have to be in either an inn or a house you're friended to when you start the transfer. You might want to have a friend hang out with you before you start the transfer so he/she can tell you if your character and the packies actually poofed when the transfer started. Might ease your mind a bit that the transfer process started off without a hitch.

This is what I did.

I "liquidated" everything I could into cheques. ("Liquid" is useful on a new shard in a way that items may or may not be.)

Then, I loaded up my bank.

I brought only cheques, my treasured black horse, equipment, combat resources (such as bandages), and stuff I felt I could sell on the new shard. (An EM sash from my old shard, for example.)

I made a note of what all of my macros were, so I could immediately rebuild them upon "spawning" on the new shard.

I then went and got very lucky finding a housing plot for a small storage shack. I just accepted the fact that my old house on my old shard would fall, and everything in it would become fodder for IDOCers.

If I forgot something, I did not fret, because I had brought over a lot of "liquid" I could use to replace anything I had forgotten.

Make sure you're self-sufficient and can handle a fight should you happen to spawn in the middle of an invasion spawn.

Then make the move, and don't look back.

Basically I took the "lean" approach.

You don't have to re-create your macros.

If you're using the Legacy Client, after the first time you log in and log out the character on the new shard, you'll find a folder for that character under My Documents\EA Games\Ultima Online Legacy\User Data\[account name]\[shard name]. Just copy and paste the macros2d.txt file from the character's folder on the old shard to the character's folder on the new shard (let it replace the macros2d.txt file that exists in the new shard folder) and you're done. Next time you log in, your character will have all its old macros.

You should be able to do the same sort of copy/paste procedure if you use the Enhanced Client, you'll just be following a different path to do it.

If you use UO Assist, you can do something similar to copy your character's old macros and hot keys over to the new shard. The path is C:\Program Files\UOAssist\UOA-Settings\[account name]\[shard name]\[character name].

Tina is correct on her post for the packies. Id also recomend the use of soulstone frags to take say other character skills you want and just remake them. Name and all, the stats can be advanced easy on a new character. with a small handful of stones you can move those 5 packies of your best, bank and yourself and move with the whole lot of your characters in your bag safe and easy. Good luck on your move!

My hubby Killswitch and I and 2 other ppl just transfered from legends to Great Lakes. We bought 2 transfer tokens each and alot of soulstones we got all our stuff transfered and our same chars on the new shard with the use of soulstones. Anything left behind on legends stored in bank boxes on chars we left there which was nothing important. We are very happy with our choice:thumbup1:

I'd like to thank everyone for advice. My boyfriend and I would be making this move together and we have a LOT of stuff and property. We have a lot of pros and cons to weigh before making a final decision.

Let me know if you end up on gl so I can look around for an open plot for a house for you.

The item cap for a transfer is exactly 900, ive tested it.

As far as transfering, I would recommend what someone already suggested, sell as much of your stuff as you can with the exception of those items you need, want, or are of some significance to you.

This is a HUGE understatement. Y'all have no idea how much stuff she and I have accumulated...
Most of the suggestions are right on.
Couple were left out.

1. Choose your new shard wisely on a NEW TOON. Once done, go ahead and see if you can find a plot for a home. A lot of peeps on a lot of the shards will hook a new inhabiter up with enough gold to place said plot!

2. Can use more than one token, so buy a couple if need be. That doubles your items that you can move, triples with 3 tokens, etc etc!
If I moved, Id take it ALL baby!!

3. If you choose Atlantic, and why not since its the best, lemme know when and where you can be found and Ill be glad to help locate a starting plot and fund said placement!

PM me if ya need/want!
Goodluck on your move!

The best way? Bring nothing and start from scratch.
Thats what i did, played europa for about 6 years and just thought id try a new shard one day. Went to GL as i had a few medioka chars there and played for a bit [during the invasion wich was fun and good for gaining].
Then decided to go to Atl. Left my castle and everything on europa and my bank boxes on GL and started from 0 on atl with a crafter, worked my tailoring up with donations from people at the bank, started doing bods, then leveled a smith an again done bods till i had enough to create a good pvm char. Now i have 5 fully finished chars on Atl and a fair stack of gold [same as back on europa and Gl].

Have been tempted to start all over again somewere else now :)

900? hmmm....

125 x 5 on packies = 625
125 in backpack = 750
150 in bank (with upgrade) = 900
17 in worn items = 917.

At least I think there are 17 clothing slots on a human/elf - maybe slightly different for a gargoyle.

I've noticed that as a fighter, both times i've switched shards in the past, my knowledge and ability with my own templates increased by leaps and bounds.

Thanks shug & koolaid for offers of assistance. I've also received a few pms from people offering to help. Everyone has been very kind and giving us a lot to think about. :grouphug: When the shards come back up I'll probably do a bit more looking around on prospective shards. I'm leaning a bit more toward starting out slowly on a shard first to see if it's a good fit. Place a house and bring over one good character and some gold. If we really like it, then we can figure out our next step.

Keep in mind that probably half the stuff you have you can toss. If you are keeping things like full sets of pumpkins or whatnot then you're hoarding a bit too much. :p

The best way to do it is to divvy things up in two groups, what is replaceable, replaceable at a loss, and what is irreplaceable. Obviously you'd want to keep what is irreplaceable, and try to keep most of/all of what is replaceable at a loss. Set up a bunch of well organized vendors and sell everything else at 10-20% less than the going shard rates. Drop a hundred runes a day at all different times. Give it a week, drop prices lower for the next week etc. Really try to pare down. Anything you can't get a set amount for just toss (for instance if you have 50 snowflakes and are trying to get 10k per, just don't bother). No one buys those virtue armor pieces except maybe the cloak, plants are great but you can grow em on your new shard, so clip em for dyes or bag them up to sell, etc etc.

Also, put all your regs in the same piles and deed up the 60k lots. Same for ingots/leather/wood/cloth/anything stackable/deedable. Get it all together. BODS can take up huge amounts of storage space, especially when you use vendors to store em. Put all your trash bods in books in lots of 100 to sell, in fact sell any bods you have that wont give bronze or better hammer or horned/barbed/cbd/etc.

That's not true. The transfer token does make you naked, but it creates a seperate pack of the items you were wearing.

Personally, I would scout around on a blank character. Things I look for are: prices in Luna, activity at Luna and Brit bank during different times of day, open house spots. You could also read the forums for each shard you are considering to see if they have what you're looking for.

I've transfered several characters to other shards for pvp but if I were to make a permanent move I don't think I could just bring a character with nothing. You could, as Lonestar says in Spaceballs "Take only what you need to survive".

Anyway good luck! And if you're looking for community, consider Chesapeake. We have very active player-run towns.

DVI is correct. I have upgraded bank storage, but I have to keep it below that with 5 packies and a backpack full. Can only transfer with 900 items max.

Check the market/vendors of your new shard before you go - see what is and isn't easily available. Here on Europa we're lucky to have a big mix of vendors from high-end artifacts to house deco and everyday necessities, but its not always the same on other shards. It'll help you decide what to take also :)

Shelly I have moved to different shards a few times
every time it is a learning experience and I hope you find
it the same for yourself

Everyone here has gave great advise but one thing I always
did to help me when going through the massive amount of
stuff from years of hording was secure 5 empty chest that were
my moving chest for each packie.
Then as I went thru my stuff I would pick what I couldnt live
without or things that had already been put into deeds I put
in the chest when one was full I moved to the next.
That way I knew how much room I had left.
That just always made it simplier for me.

Good luck in your adventure

I've transferred many times with items on my character. When you start the transfer, the worn items automatically go into the transfer-crate in their own back-pack to be retrieved on the new shard.

Keep what you need, sell what you don't.. then make the move.

I would create a temporary character on the desired shard to get a feel if its really a good move for you too.
