Any suggestion on a good messaging utility ?

Often, when playing games, one comes to get asked whether, for better contacting, one uses this or that messaging utility of the many out there.

Of course, the utitlities out there are not all the same and all have their pros and cons.

Does anyone have any suggestion of one that is good to use ?

One that is safe to use, which means one that does not let out one's own IP address, can be set not to accept files or anything which could be a threat to one's own computer security and things like that.

Also, a utility that allows to send and receive messages with the other various messaging utilities out there so that one does not necessarily have to have any specific utility to keep in contact with someone using it.

Anyways, any good suggestions ?

Get AIM or ICQ, then use pidgin so you can message anyone using anything.

websites like Meebo - Connecting AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Facebook, MySpace messengers are all in one messengers that run off websites. i find these to be very useful for communication because it saves you from having to download any specific program.

Thanks for quick reply. But I do not want to use AIM or ICQ because people will try to screw me over. By using the said program opens up ports in my system in order to communicate with others. I do not want to use MSN, because random people adds me and there are a lot of spams. Again please do not suggest something so stupid like AIM or ICQ where it's cearly very dangerous that people might use it to their advantages and hack my computer and put key logger on my PC and steal all my precious UO accounts. You people always try to trick me into using something, and I am not stupid so I wont use MSN/ICQ/AIM/Y!Messenger/Skype/Gtalk ect and get myself screwed over and lose everything. Thanks for your suggestions tho.

I know all about the many Rumors w/ ICQ, all BS. Had it for 13? yrs, Never got an unwanted file, message, or friend add, etc. Set the permissions correctly the First time & you won't have any problem.
But this isn't for You, is it?

I use Trillian ...... that way I can have AIM, ICQ, Yahoo and MSN along with many other popular things. Trillian PRO is easy to use and allows me to save all my messages for future reference..

Also I too have heard rumors of ICQ but I've had it almost 10 years and never had a problem at all. Sure I get a few requests from some folk in weird writting of some sort but if you are smart and ALWAYS check the identity of who's sending you a request before accepting then you are fine. I get those weird requests and I just deny and block every time. You can set it up to not allow any requests at all... which is easier then all you have to do is add people yourself... much safer that way. But I usually know who's sending me a request and when anyway.

But like I said I like Trillian it puts all those in one and that way no matter what your friends use you can add them.

Of course you could always do your own due diligence and simply visit Download.com (run by cnet) and search for chat programs, look at reviews by the editors and users....Ya know, draw your own conclusions.

I have also used ICQ sence it was released and Never, Never have I had a problem. The only people in my ICQ are people I actually play with in UO and it is not linked to FB or any other site or program. If you are smart about using the program and set your security to a level you are comfortable with....I see no problem using ICQ. Like I said---I have for many years!
