Yes... and no...

You can report scammers on your shard forum or even U-hall - but you can not mention their name, guild, etc.

I tend to post a general warning to be careful in (whatever situation applies) as it can help others avoid that scam... but I also try not to give details of the scam that might help create a new scammer... It's a tricky line to walk.

Does this mean that I can not list anyone's name or guild even if its to say congrats on so and so?

Just out of curiosity why is it that we can not post the persons name or Guild?

Why would the scammer be protected by the terms and services agreement, when they abuse it and don't follow it themselves?

I understand not mentioning the specifics of the scam, but who cares if someone posts their name to warn others? Just seems silly to me.

In the end EA owns everything about the game, so again, unless EA is involved in the scam (which they are not), why would they care about saying someones name?

Heck a lot of people use their char name for their forum name here on Stratics.. does this mean they need to change their names cause we know them?

Also think about how many people have the same name on a shard. There are some guilds that have many people with the same name.

So I say again, who cares if we post someones name? It's not like it would be slander.

edit:
Also its not like they cant make a new char and transfer all the skill to it and delete the char that people know as a scammer.

Posting a name or a guild to say congrats is fine - that is certainly not a personal attack.

Beyond that, I believe that you answered your own question.

Forum names and in-game names are often different - or they can be the same. There is no unique naming system in game - and there are often many people with duplicate names (how many legolas are out there?). How do you know whose reputation you are slandering? There used to be a Tazar on another shard with a horrible reputation... I caught slack for that for ages.

Coming here to "attack" someone by making accusations is where our rule comes into play. This is not to protect the scammer - it is to protect the innocent with a similar name.

We've all seen the sore-losers that loose a PVP battle, then page a GM over something minor in retaliation... Do you really believe all the "accusations of scamming" are real? I've seen many scamming attempts that get caught in progress only to have the scammer blatantly accuse their victim of being the scammer (shifting blame in public).

We've all seen the scams where you create a new character and name it after one of the shard's most upstanding citizens to use that players good reputation to create evil.

There is just too much opportunity for abuse if we allow it. I have had people impersonate me in an attempt to scam guild/alliance mates, etc.

Maybe if there were a judge/jury system to convict scammers then it would be fair to list those convicted, but as it is, Stratics is not a court of public opinion and we do not prosecute someone based on "facts" that can not be proven on a forum (Screenshots can be altered, chat logs faked, etc.)

It's not a perfect system, but it is the set of rules we agreed to when we signed up for Stratics Accounts.

Sadly with anonymity. People would accuse each other to death. Imagine that.

I we could all just get along....

What you CAN do is say what the scam is to warn others. Which is always appreciated.

But yeah. Problem coming if you could post names of players/guilds is that you will always run into the bad eggs who will purposefully accuse others falsely just to hurt their image.

I sell used cars for a living so I try to keep my eyes open on scams but I still fall for some once in a while. The scammers are just like people in real life who are out to scam you, they change their names and get new tactics all the time. Here is some scams I have heard about or seen done:
Show you an artifact then switch it out for a cursed one or faction one, I also see cursed/faction ones on vendors just a little below the current market prices.
Runic saws/kits/hammers/pof/toknuo dyes with just one use left at near full price.
Replica items with a lot durability already gone.
Show you a great Greater Dragon then switch it for a bad one or show it blessed.
Show you a Dreadmare and sell you a Nitemare(saw a guy waste 30mil on this one)
Put the item on a Fel vendor then have stealthed friend steal it back.
Guy in your guild offers to dye your item for you and you don't see it again.
The trade starts then guy cancels and puts 100000 checks up instead of 1000000 checks.

Maybe have something here set up like ask the Dev Forums.
Report a Scam Forum
You report the scam, and before anyone else sees it has to be looked over for anything like names guild etc to be deleted out to make the post approve able by a mod or admin. After being approved the mod or admin posts it under them, and not the original poster, and locks the thread.

If anyone wants to know the scam that Adora is referring to, feel free to contact me, as Tazar points out, "Do you really believe all the "accusations of scamming" are real? I've seen many scamming attempts that get caught in progress only to have the scammer blatantly accuse their victim of being the scammer (shifting blame in public)" and I could only agree...ask me for an example...I was recently SCAMMED...thought I was too old for this double whopper with cheese. Oh and my ICQ is 394-260-037 not 468-821-183.

Why not just post what the scam is here? You know, to warn everyone? Without names of course.

So what you are REALLY saying is that car salesmen are scammers? I KNEW IT! :mf_prop:

She doesn't because I asked her not to - posting details of it only encourages others to try it out and increases the problem. Please submit but reports where applicable.
