Any enhancing issues with new shame stuff?

I have a couple bows and a black staff that spawned with 40 ssi. I'd like to enhance with ash to add 10 more and get to 50. I thought I remember reading somewhere that the ssi got overwritten with just the 10 ssi. Can anyone confirm if this is working?

I made 2 35ssi bows I was able to enhance with ash and get 45ssi. I didn't have a forged metal tool so I broke the 40ssi stuff I tried to enhance to 50ssi.
