An idea I would like to throw out on the table.

I have noticed tents popping up around my house recently and it gave me the idea for this.

Bring tents back into the game, but I would suggest to do it like this.

1. Allow one tent to be placed on an account that already has a house.

2. Create a timer for which this tent will fall (a few hours to one day).

Optional 3. Build tents so that they may be faced in the desired direction, like to have the opening be on the east, west or north.

This could greatly help player run events that are done in the throughout the map.

For example, if someone wanted to have an event selling in game items, they could place these tents and operate the temperary shops within them. (I am talking about direct sale, no vendors.)

Groups who hunt in the wilderness can benefit from these as a temperary base.

They could be used in various RP scenarios as well such as fair's or adventures and exploration.

Let them keep their container (or you can get rid of it).

It seems like this is something that players will use and enjoy which doesn't seem like it would require much change to the code to complete (could be wrong).

Please feel free to discuss.
:)

Dev's said they're not bringing back tents during the most recent town hall meeting.

Indeed, I imagine its a security issue with tents having no foundation, So anyone can walk in private or not.

What might be a better solution is adding tent walls and roof to the customization menu.

Well anyone one could walk in and what? Sit your chair? *snickers* As long as any containers could be secured like normal,I can't imagine a problem.

Ohh good idea. A sort of reward for having the camping skill.
If we wanted to reflect on that further, we could suggest that a player with GM camping can build a temporary tent in of which several players could log out. This could further possibly make the camping skill actually be of use and therefore be used on actual templates.

And yeah, the tents arn't really for security (beyond the one box). Naturally anyone who is determined to go inside a tent will be able to get into the tent, just like IRL.

They would be more for show or as a sort of sub-check point or gathering place for players.

I wrote up a big idea about it like 5 years ago in fact, along with some other camping expansion.

They would be great for player events, and rping etc.

How about the simple, easy, solution....

Add Tent part tiles to the House Customization menu, and a footing/entrance tile set to allow you to hide the presence of the steps?

Yes, but the idea is to be able to put one up in a location different from where your house is. But you are right, that would be the easiest solution.

I like your idea, that would be a cool addition to housing.

Tents would be cool, but too easy to exploit in PvP

I'd like to see tents used as part of a camp feature for harvesting resources. Like a mining camp, lumberjack camp, etc. Along with campfires.

That would fit in really well with the Sandbox style of UO. But I'm just not sure how it would be implemented.

Hum... you know at first I was like Heck no don't put tents back in the game...

But now that you mention it tied to the Camping skill... I'm warming to the idea.

That's interesting... thinking this isn't such a bad idea.

They said no to tents being players houses.

If this was a temp thing, something ppl could utilize with-in a certain timeframe, and the box that spawns with the tent being only accessable to the person that placed the tent, It could be used usefully in the way Zuckuss described. Heck, to keep the pvp hacks out of the idea, make it truly a vendor idea and make it only place in non-fel facets.

If tents were used to make special camp sites, what could the purpose be?
-Increased skill gain?
-Luck in a radius?
-Increased recovery rates?

Or if they were used for resource gathering,
-increased harvesting amounts?
-Higher level of harvest specials? (Gems, bark, etc.)

If UO were to go into player cities, these might be a thing related to that too. City owned resource points.
