I am on the way of coming back... but iv'e always been a fan of not following the trend (the trend now is to have a GD)

so looking for some alternatives, for fun more than anything else... maybe role play

how about 5x imps? would they be effective? with demon pack instinct?

or 5x wolves?

any suggestions?

It really depends on the rest of your tempate. One off the beaten path tactics is a necro tamer with a pair of fire steeds. Corpskin + firesteed(equine instincts)=mega damage and lots of fun! Ranged heals and fire spells are a nice bonus too!

We now have some realy kool spiders to play with. You can find a good pair in the underworld and they do some nasty damage and and the're SPIDERS! Heh too kool am I right?

Funnily enough Ive just started training a disco/tamer too, after reading these forums and seeing all the alternative templates I decided to go with this:

120 Music (110 Real)
120 Disco (92 Real)
120 Provocation (120 Real)
120 Taming (87 Real)
120 Vet (92 Real)
110 Animal Lore (105 Real)
90 Magery (75 Real)
29 Meditation (29 Real)

Using jewelry (+28 Disco, +28 Vet, +28 Taming) plus Song Woven (+10 Music) Talisman (+5 Taming +5 Lore) and finally Tome of Lost Knowledge (+15 Magery)

Bring my skills to a whopping 829

I was wondering how well this template plays out and if a Gr Dragon is best thing to go with?
EDIT: Made a slight mistake with taming and prov, they are both in the same skill set so swapped it out for vet instead.

I like having a multitude of options available. Why not eh? Have a few different cars in the garage, simply take out what you want to fight with. It is as simple as deciding which weapon or spell book to bring on a hunt. choose what works well for what you are trying to accomplish.

My usual's
----------
Greater - when I need a tank
Rune Beetle / Nightmare - When I want to be engaged and have to do more in the fight
Cu - Who wouldn't like riding a dog, hop off and have it chew a mobs face off?
5 battle chickens - yes they are a bit weaker BUT they are fun!! lower level mobs. Nothing like taking on a mummy with 5 battle chickens.

Somewhat viable and very rarely used is the Bake Kitsune, either in a pair or one alongside a Rune Beetle. Only downside is no mount.

When I was in the early stages with my necro tamer (not that the real taming skill is all that high) I ran with two kitsunes and its quite fun and they do look pretty evil

As long as your tamer is capable of keeping a pet alive, I'd say try whatever pet takes your fancy :)

Once you've decided what you want to spend time hunting with, it's a case of looking at the pet's stats and skills to determine it's strengths and weaknesses. Then find a suitable spawn to try hunting and make sure you're equipped to give good vetting support and strong armour to protect yourself.

I've tried some fairly random pet choices, from battle chickens and assorted farm animals to stronger pets and combos. I'm another fan of bake kitsune, most of my tamers have 2 kits and a frenzy. I also like the nightmare/dread combo and assorted combinations of rune beetle, mare, uni, dragon and kitsune. Or a pack.

Between combining different skill combos and pets, and then employing some pet handling skills and tactics and some craziness, there's a lot of fun if you look beyond the greater draggy.

Anything that AoEs or uses paragon targetting may be a problem for you (no defense and almost no mana regen). Remember you'll be on foot if you use a GD (unless gargoyle). I'd probably try a beetle / mare combo if you can manage controlling two pets and throwing the provo/disco at the same time. The downside is they would be harder to keep alive, but the upside is they'd kill faster than the GD.

Otherwise, it would be fun to play. I'd recommend 110 real taming skill instead of 87. Taking 23 from your meditation won't impact your MR much, especially if you're human. I'd probably go with as much MR on my suit as I could fit and put the other 6 skill into magery.

Simply put, there are no alternatives to the greater dragon.

Anyway you may look into a pack of hell hounds, they hit hard, you can have 5 of them and they have enough hp to handle two or three blows before they pass away, so you have at least a chance to heal them if you're quick enough.

Forget to hunt anything bigger than a demon though.

Since I grew more adept at hoping on/off and sicking my cu, I've hardly used my greater. My tamer/archer and tamer/necro use their cus almost exclusively during PvM encounters. The only tamer that I still use a greater for is my weaver/tamer, simply because I need a meatshield while I WOD.

Alternatively, I knew a disco/tamer who used his pack of frenzies to great effect. Our guild had a huge, multi-day greater dragon tournament to establish the strongest GD in the guild. The frenzied ostard pack killed the tournament champion.

With frenzies, hellhounds, etc., your damage output will be massive, but it does help to have a tank (a sampire friend or a tamer with a GD/cu).

High plains borua have tankability! 600+ hp decent resists 3 slots and for some strange reason very low taming/lore req.

Paired with a low land borua or ruddy borua you have more tank then even a greater Capps around 1200 hp. While they dont have the punch of a GD they do tank very well!

You can take any of the 2 slot pets for damage or in the case of the ruddy/lowland any of the 3 slots. A ruddy+rune is a nice combo. Of course my tame is either a gargoyle or a wraith so....

Ah! We lizardmen call those "guys with pets". No tamer could ever take his scaled friend into a pointless pet fight. How could that be "mutually beneficial"! Shame on you softskin, may Sudiva forgive your sins!

A solid nugget of golden truth from an experienced tamer. What will limit your choice of pets is what you are able to keep alive. What you want to do is match survivability with damage output.

If you are looking for something different, you might want to try raptors. They move very fast and I expect a fully trained pair would be tough and pretty formidable. A chiv dexxer on a swamp dragon with two reptalons would definitely be a different look from what most expect to see, but it might well be worth trying. :)

But the key is keeping them alive. A dead pet does you no good, and if you are constantly having to resurrect your pets they will eventually be weakened to uselessness, and spending more time training pets than actually playing the game with them, is not much fun.

Bake kitsune + rune beetle is a nasty combo; but a old favorite of mine is White wyrm + nightmare

I use my nightmare and rune beetle still... occasionally when I trek into fel it seems like the players there have forgot how to handle a rune beetle.
