Altering items for Gargoyles

I'm making a Throwing Wammy and discovered that I could "Alter" a Quiver for a Gargoyle. I grabbed a Quiver of the Elements and jazam, it was "Altered". However, in doing so, it completely LOST it's Damage Modifier (the reason I wanted it in the 1st place) !

Is this "normal"? Do all the quivers lose their Damage Modifier when "altered"? If so, that stinks...
