Is there a list somewhere of the items that can and cannot be altered?

Just make a like item or buy a normal from an NPC and try. Arty & reward is the changing factor mentioned. I would rather see items that are arty spawn in different "race only" chance (AoF for gargs maybe?). Realy wish they quit changing OOPS items that really has no effect on the game. Latest cloaks and the dyed swampy armor changes come to mind. Man hours spent on those changes could of been spent going to the latest hotspot where a load of players are. Or a lone miner in fel to see who had their head up their arse. Video of their action and banning posted here titled with "When you least expect it, your caught on UO Candid Camera!"

I'm not sure if there is a list anywhere, but it sure is BS that one can alter an item into a gargoyle item, but NOT back to its original form! So now my AoS apron is useless to me if I decide to make the character human again. =/

Imo the reason they won't allow altering garg to human is mainly because gargoyle armor carries 50% more base resist. This means a gargoyle armor altered for human and elf will be more superior than straight human/elf armor. If they allow an arty to be reverse altered its basically adding a code that's allowing garg items to become human while it doesn't matter on human elf arties they simply disable garg to human altering all around.

Different human weapons alters into same gargoyle weapon thus if reverse altering is allow you a new series of codes might have to be added to give you an option of what human weapon you are gonna get when you reverse alter.

If they allow reverse alter I already have some crazy suits combo in mind.

I agree, but we should have the ability to convert items without properties back to their original state.

Simple Solution, If you think you might want to use it on a Non Gargoyle, Dont convert it.

Its much like Evil / Hero dye on siege, You never Dye your Non Throwaway items because you might need em Further Down the Line.

Personally, I'm just looking to be able to use my armor of fortune and janna's staff on my gargoyles.

I know one thing, you can't alter the planeswords for garg use.. that stinks!
