All This New Stuff... But...

The 12th Anniversary is literally days away, and I'm hoping that it will not pass with as little fare as did the 11th (which passed without any fare at all).

Also, I'm curious as to what plans are for 11th and 12th year veteran rewards... the stuff added that got us through year 10 were great, but apparently year 11 wasn't on the schedule at that point.

I have my fingers crossed for some good things going on in both departments.

with the EM's being around i would love to see some kind of Street Party in Brit and then a hunt or something, maybe another invasion of Luna :p

It could be a double celebration...12years and the news of Dawns Corronation!

There was a day, Ra'Dian, when you would have said "... but... the same old problems persist."

Now you're asking for more free handouts. Not just hand outs, but with favoritism for vets over others. It's a good game, eh? Telling newbs that they can't have what old veterans can have for 12 freaking years, unless they pay those old vets through the nose for it. But UO and the player base that's left aren't trying to grow, they are only trying to hang on.

LOL this is funny. I wouldn't buy a vet reward that I, as a younger player, can't use.

Vet rewards had a purpose in the earlier days of Ultima Online. Player retention being the key. And yes, I think it has value as a reward for the number of years of loyalty to the game. It's an earned privilege. Not a gimme at all.

If you are a younger player who looks to the vet reward system as an unique opportunity for a select few, don't hate. It's so uncouth.

Eventually you'd get your turn and a newer player than yourself will look at you with much disdain as well. Probably speak to you in disparaging words too. So you see, you have much to look forward to.

Until then, patience grasshopper.

I think SA is enough for now... if you want free hand outs just go do the puzzle quest.

I started on the first day of UO's release. I've quite twice, and returned simply because everything else is either a grind like WoW and nothing more, or a gank fest like Shadowbane and nothing more. Or just plain crappy. But I'd soon qualify for the 11 year reward. So no, it's not a question of my status.

Vets "earned" it? Sure, ok. Is it good game design to selectively qualify players for rewards? Not in a "sandbox" game, no.

Who selectively qualifies a player other than the player themselves? It's part of the stuff that make Ultima Online unique in comparison to other "sandbox" games. In wish case, there are no comparison, sandbox or not.

After 12 years, it's a bit like pointing out that the sky is blue, isn't it?
Now you're asking for more free handouts. Not just hand outs, but with favoritism for vets over others. It's a good game, eh? Actually, I believe half of my post was referring to not letting the 12 year anniversary pass without any fare. As in, last year... (this part is starting to sound strangely familiar as I type it)... there was nothing celebrating the 11th anniversary (save a post by Jeremy on uoherald.com as I recall). I'd like to see that not happen again this year.

As for asking for "favoritism" and "free handouts" and that, uh... did you perchance wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning or something? I personally think the Veteran Reward system is a very nice way of saying, "Thank you for subscribing to this game for the past X number of years." I'm sure someone (perhaps even you) will come along and say, "But most of the 'old' accounts were bought off of ebay anyway, and no one plays a 12 year old account that has been playing for 12 years." And yet, I've been playing since October 23, 1997.

I don't believe I demanded anything, don't believe I was rude. I would simply like to see an addition to the veteran rewards system for the additional years that some of us have been playing. It's a nice thing to look forward to, you know, something new for supporting the game as long as some of us have.

As far as trying to grow UO, just how exactly would you expect the playerbase to grow UO? I play UO and I play WoW. When I show my friends which games I play, they are immediately interested in WoW; they usually snicker when I show them UO and when I tell them how old it is, they say, "It shows." I mean, okay, look at it this way... there are some very good games for the Commodore 64 and the Atari 2600. Games I might even still enjoy sitting down and playing from time to time. My 13 year old nephew has no interest in them at all. I can't, for the life of me, figure out why (/sarcasm).

So... err... not to put too fine a point on it, but did I **** in your Wheaties this morning or something, Treb?

There was an 11th Anniversary?

And can we please actually get vet rewards sometime soon? For 11th and 12th year? Please? :/

Ewwww... Pee-wheaties..

Joking aside, 11th and 12th year vet rewards would be nice.. And please, no more rehued things?

I know you have clothing 'engraving' tools and such hidden in the code.. Lets see those as rewards...

Just don't let another UO milestone slip into obscurity. Unfortunately, I won't be surprised if they do.

Sorry about your Wheaties then... I didn't realize I'd been sitting on the wrong side of the table.
The fact that there always was such a table has gauled me from the start. I loved all the back stabbing. I loved seeing a house named "secret society" with players building skills on new names in preparation of taking over my idea's plans. Your roleplay buddies always did that, they always had to take things over and make it theirs with their stamp and direction on it. And it killed Yew, almost everyone who left, other than for the boondoggle that was Trammel, left because of them. Because if it wasn't theirs, they had to destroy it in and out of game. Hell, remember Alicia DeLong (I think was the name)? Remember how he/she tried like hell to keep some roleplay activity in Fel? Remember how your buddies completely decimated every event, and verbally abused that player on the message boards? Remember Mythra's efforts in Yew on the Town Council? That player stuck around through all kinds of crap for a long time.

I'm sorry that you moved around that table. It wasn't meant as that big of a slam, just a comment to try to get you to think like you used to.

I'm not certain how the entire Great Lakes roleplay community that existed from 1997 through to present day in various incarnations and with people coming and going all happen to have become "my roleplay buddies," much less how everyone I've ever been associated with somehow stole your ideas and made them their own... to be honest, I have no idea what specific incidences (much less which inspecific incidences) you're referring to.

Last time I remember working with you in-game was when a group of us all met in Trinsic to discuss the pearl necklace, I believe, and the various threads of possibility that went along with it. At that meeting, I didn't go out of character, which was some of a frustration to a couple of people present, but, the irony is, even though I disagreed with some of the ideas (such as Mythic/EA/Origin has ever kept much by the way of a plot bible), you might be surprised to learn that since that meeting, there's been in the private study of my house, be it in Dracona, or now near Compassion Grove, sitting upon my desk is a vase with a rose and a feather, and a pearl necklace that I looted from Melissa.

See, regardless of any of the OOC banter that was going on in the society at various points in time, I enjoy IC interactions, and that meeting was one of those RP turning points that went nowhere, but which I took to heart.

Actually, no, I don't. Dracona didn't become largely involved in the roleplay community until the Dragon Knight/Chaos Knight plotline. Prior to that, I personally got involved a few times, and brought CAD with me to several events -- mostly surrounding Hebban Ollah -- but we were still very periphery. In fact, it wasn't until Dracona hosted the first couple of searches for the first books of Dragonkind upon which the Dragothan religion is based that anyone even, I suspect, took CAD seriously as a roleplay entity. Which was largely our fault because we were the biggest anti-PK guild on the shard (and for a short time, the biggest guild on the shard); CAD, like much of GLRP, took a huge hit after Trammel.

But as far as internal squabbles within GLRP, well, yeah, I know they exist. It's part of why I was successful in the role that I played in-game for several years... because I listened to people, took people seriously, and put community above all else. I won't swear I was always successful, and several times, I know I was misinterpreted, but at the end of the day, I was always -- and yet remain -- community centric.
I'm sorry that you moved around that table. It wasn't meant as that big of a slam, just a comment to try to get you to think like you used to.
I have not changed my style of thought, Treb... I've only enhanced the methods by which I express those thoughts. As for the two things I posted initially here... I was vocal last year about the lack of fanfare for the 11th anniversary, and long before they filled in years 7-10, I was asking them to do so.

See, I also spent many a year in customer service. From a CS perspective, Veteran Rewards are a very nice "thank you" for continued subscription. The game continues to exist because people like you and I have played for so long. Imagine what would happen if all the old-timers quit in the first year and never came back. UO would have long ago suffered the same fate as Earth: Above and Beyond, The Sims Online, or other MMOGs. UO is also not the only game that does this... I believe SWG and a few others offer veteran rewards. They're a light-weight loyalty benefit that, while not necessarily required, do give good face to EA/Mythic on the "Thanks for being a customer," front.

I agree with Ra...... I'd like to see more additions to the rewards....

of course now that we have gargoyles I think they we need to add some gargoyle robes to the rewards. Since gargoyles kinda get the short end of the stick when it comes to arties and things.

I always felt bad for the guards. hehe I know some of those meetings ran on forever, and at least those involved had an active role.

But, I was also very glad those of you who were guarding showed up. It added an air of authenticity to the meetings that we couldn't have done without you folks willing to just stand around.

Plus, you know -- not sure which characters you were/are -- some of you got involved and expressed opinions and thoughts and good stuff like that -- or kicked some evil to the dirt. You know, the fun stuff. hehe

If they make Dawn the monarch of Britannia I will seriously quit this game and never ever come back. Dawn is a terrible bullcrap Mary Sue that I had hoped we were rid of years ago.

Blackthorn: The time has come for a new king. I am, of course, the obvious choice.

Dawn: HEY LOOK AT ME!
Blackthorn: What? Who the hell are you?
Dawn: I'm Dawn and I'm TOTALLY AWESOME!
Dupre: Who let her in here?
Dawn: Look at this poorly-written comic book STARRING ME drawn by one of Todd McFarlane's third-tier artists! Aren't I just GREAT?!
Jaana: They needed a new female lead, so they invented THIS ******?
Mariah: I know, right? I don't think I'm even in UO.
Dawn: My armor shows off my BOOOOBS!
Dupre: Security!

Okay, I'll admit it... I lol'd.
And I agree. What the eff happened when people were like "OMG, DAWN SHOULD BE QUEEN!"? I mean, I didn't vote for her, or even like her for the matter, so where and how was this decision made?

First, I'll start by saying I haven't read all of the posts, however I agree with RaDian that the anniversary shouldn't be overlooked yet again. The 10th was terrible, 11th ignored (where ARE those IN GAME items that were mentioned by at least 2 possibly 3 or 4 official people???) and now no word on the 12th. Even if they didn't give one single item out they should at least note it and maybe have a couple of events.

Vet rewards are nice and I certainly enjoy them, but I'd be pleased to see the anniversary not shoved under the rug once more.

Does anyone remember that Simpsons where Itchy & Scratchy had this really irritating dog named Poochy to the show? They'd be doing their usual thing, and suddenly Poochy would have to ride in and do a slam dunk on a skateboard? Yeah, Dawn is like that.

Dawn was poorly implemented with Third Dawn, and was dropped not because people "didn't like her," but because fiction in UO TANKED due to thePowers That Be ceasing to care about the game and the playerbase. She wasn't used much again until the defeat of Blackthorn in June of '03

Don't blame the character for EA's crapy handling of UO fiction and history. Lets give the EMs time to develop the character fully before bemoaning the fact she is Queen.

Lord British is gone, never to return (or at least extremely unlikely)... The evil tyrant Casca is dead. Britannia needs a leader, give Dawn a chance.
