Alien Landing Lights?

I am new to the Enhanced Client and noticed something I've never seen in the Classic Client--greenish, glowing, pulsating upside-down cones of particle effects seeming placed at random all over the place. They don't show up with handles.

What the hell are they?

They sound like waypoints.
Do they correspond to "dots" on the map?

They correspond to markers on your map.

Don't step on them, they're abduction points. You'l find yourself teleported to a dark spaceship where you'l be experimented on.
