Abyss Trash area ...... Dev's Fix needed

For the last few days I have noticed the Trash area in Abyss devoid of just about anything... I know they ajusted the drop rate but I think they went a bit too far on the turn down. I have my thiefs running on 4 shards and one of my favorite stops is the Trash bin..... I know there was a ajustment for the drop which was ok till I noticed nothing was dropping. Oh i see a bag now and then - like 1 every other day but I spent a few hours waiting to see if anything was going to drop to see the rate. Nothing. Its very disapointing....

Could I ask for it to be ajusted again but a bit up the drop

It hasn't been the last few days but since the publish a month or so back. They did change the drop rate and yes, not much shows up there now at all sadly. Unless someone is grinding out oil cloths or something that is.

There is no point even walking around down there unless your on a busy shard during weekend and even then you won't see much.

Just before I went on jury duty the Trash Area was getting decient drops..... now I am counting in the bags and trash we all would not bother with. This was good, from a odd perspective. You could tell some people were doing Heartwood quests by the bags and tali's. But all in all was not too barren. Now..... I try to go look 2 to 4 times a day just to see what is dropping... nothing. after the 3rd shard and not a stitch of even a bag I was mystified. I came to Stratics and reread the patch.... what it boils down to is the dial was turned down too much. I can see a small drop but this is down to nothing!:sad3:

Hrmm... I go through that area at least twice a day looking for stealables. It goes in waves on my shard, currently seems to be BODS. This week alone I've got BODS for several spined and horned sewing kits, and runic hammers from DC to gold (seems they are looking for POFs). And it seems I find a few interesting bits here and there, weapons or armor that I can unravel to relics.

So, I think it has to do more with your shard's population than anything else.

I don't know could have something to do with folk doing more unraveling than throwing, Maybe?

The system may be working perfectly but the fact is it is dependent on players throwing stuff away. And, as MalagAste stated, players may be unraveling stuff more as opposed to just tossing stuff away.

The change happened immediately when they announced they would be dialing back on the percentage chance for items to go to the Cavern of the Discarded.

Some changes may be due to unraveling, but not to the extent that the change is.

It sounds like a sign that some shards have died out player wise.... if the trash is anything to go by.

Forgot that they dialed it back. Maybe they should turn it back up again.

The problem before they scaled it back was just the sheer volume that appeared. Some days you would find hundreds and hundreds of items (maps, candelabras, boxes, etc.) that literally blocked travel. The poor scripters kept getting stuck on all the garbage!

No offense, but I'm glad it's the way it is now. As someone that goes there to fight the rat spawns it was horrible before. You couldn't even use your object handles option and trying to loot corpses was sometimes impossible due to the sheer volume of crap down there.

I wish they'd either move the rat spawns or what would probably be easier, move the trash pile to another currently deserted location.

But now there is no point going there. You just find trashed bods (99% of which are worthless) or some oil cloths or whatever someone training is grinding out. It has suffered the same fate as many other items/systems/whatever throughout the course of the game's life. It has been nerfed into pointlessness. It seems so hard for them to strike the right balance.

"But I still go there and so does my fifth daughter's cousin's wife and we found a grandfather clock!" That's usually the anecdote that comes next.

But the point is (and this applies to stuff in UO overall, so I guess this is a bit of a general rant), if no one is using a system/item/ability/thing then that is generally because it has no value except to those rare few people who insist it is even though it doesn't really give them any kind of real benefit (I have been one of those people in the past =P).

The name of it is the Cavern of the Discarded. Discarded meaning junk, trash, useless items.

I don't see the problem here. I mean what are you really expecting, to walk into your local landfill and find a priceless treasure?

Driven Insane my point was that nothing was dropping, not that I expect a server birth to pop in the place and make my day. I saw when the area has a good deal of things as well but now there is nothing 99% of the time. Yes I agree its based on players tossing things but even junk is not showing up. Its as if the at first it was on 7 of the trash deposit dial and now its on .5. A happy medium I am sure the Dev wants, and they would not know its to drastic a cut back if no one lets them know about it. I can see it on a very slow shard, perhaps 2.... but 4 and one of them is a semi busy shard. I am not asking them to put it back but dial it up a tiny bit. I am all for the happy medium.

I always just threw my stuff outside my house and it let it decay if nobody took it :)

I prefer to let the explorers of the land to find it than just dump it in a trash bin so it all collected in one spot :p

On LS... in the last couple weeks I grabbed a Crimson Cincture, went on a vendor for around 30k. It has dropped off from a peak, back when all the houses were falling, that's what I marked the increase to - dye tubs, etc. Then it dropped like a rock, but seemed to recover a bit when they made that change

When I first made my way down to the discarded (after being repeatedly killed by an efreet at the entrance for an hour) I thought I had found a treasure trove of goodies. I was a newb again, and picking through the stuff looking for something better than what I had was exciting. But when I trained cartography up in a day I decided to check the area and I felt embarrassed by what I saw. When I went back after the recent change, I found a handful of bows and an empty bag. I agree it needed a fix, but the difference now is night and day.

Maybe the rate could go up. Or, because I think they fixed the rate to kill the way grinding affected the drop, what if the drop was based on the character? The more a person bins stuff the less less likely their items will show up. That'd still keep the numbers low. If they changed it to help players working the spawn, what if the stuff could also spawn in the cities that have sewers and caves.

Yes, it is called the cavern of the discarded. My point isn't what items show up there, but that very little that is actually discarded now shows up there. IMO they were overzealous when they reduced the spawn rate. I like sifting through people's discarded junk but there isn't any junk to sift through anymore unless someone happens to throw away a bag of 125 oil cloths or spyglasses at a time and things like that.

Ok Tina I can give you an idea of the items that usualy show up.
Rings - all kinds of junk stuff
Bracelets same - well lts just say jewelry et all
bags boxes crates chests non item point value player made
junk armor and weapons - before the change you at least saw a few of them
furnature - again player made
plants seeds etc
bods yes they are droped in trash alot or were
regs - all different kinds what ever players drop in
Tali's
The stuff you would find down there even with the removal of items for points, the rune books and runes (this is ok by me) was at times worth looking through. Now thats not saying I have not found a rare goodie or 2 but I dont expect them... those are sweet surprises.
The reason I am asking the Dev to tweek it up a tad is there is nothing of this now.... 4 shards worth of nothing..... in the last 3 days 2 bags and a ring (no mods) is all there has been. I dont think they meant the rate to be this low. I go there not for the trash but for the pot, crown and push me pull u, I might be lucky to get. The Trash is sorta a little fun.

They did ruin it down there with their silly "fix" when the clean up point system went in, really they took that entirely too seriously. It's a game. Let people fight over stuff in the "junk yard"
The part I think that is hugely broken right now is that UO lost a huge amount of the player base since January and things like this are very noticeable. Cruise around what used to be the top 8 shards on an average afternoon and see for yourself. Jeff has tweeted that subscription numbers have gone up, but those of us who actually log into the game and run around to the popular locations know different. Less players means less people throwing things away and therefore the Cavern of Discarded is empty except for the few times you can find someone grinding out a skill.

Well yeah. The whole point of a trash barrel (for me) was a place to put stuff that I want deleted (not redistributed.) It was more convenient and faster for those who didn't want to lag the game by leaving their junk on the ground than, say, stuffing corpses with the items.

Now even if I trash something, there's a chance it still ends up on the ground. ... ? Well, back to stuffing corpses...

Last week my hubby was digging treasure chests, tiring of that activity he switched chars and went to work the rat spawn. There on the ground he found a treasure map - completed by his treasure hunter a short time earlier :D

Prior to the 'fix' I happened to be training up my first ever thief for artifact collecting, and the Cavern was a nice place to stealth around, picking up odds and ends that I thought 'useful', between checking the Abyss stealable locations. The results were quite nice, assorted things that unravelled into useful regents (including many relic fragments), useful talismans that helped round out a couple of crafters, and the occasional nice piece of 'overlooked' - usually things with unusual item tags that got 'missed', I suspect several were when someone grabbed and sorted IDOC loot, as they look at a glance to be nothing of worth so got trashed whle they were concentrating on the more obviously 'valuable' stuff. Usually ctrl-shift for item tags pretty much filled the screen.

After the fix - the Cavern was pretty much emptied of anything. It's not that it was a valuable source of essential materials, or a 'get rich quick' site - it was never that. What has happened, though, is a massive dropoff in the 'recycling rate' for everything, and that's probably an unintended result of the change. Some stuff still ends up there, but only a tiny fraction of the quantities that used to. Might be the plan, but I can't see why such a big impact on a fairly minor sub-system was needed, so I tend to agree it's not 'working as intended'.

I've gotten those since the change, including turn-in items, Yesterday I got 2 undecoded level 1 t-maps, and again wondered as I picked them up, Who throws away 10 blood moss??

Just five minutes ago, I picked up a small BOD for a shadow runic hammer. Sure, would be nice to see a true discarded treasure once in a while, and maybe bump the spawn up a little, but it's not completely worthless.

Exactly my thought but then thats into a trash barrel too is it not????? So when I turn things in there may be a chance it goes there? Used to be I'd turn maps into the Library for points but I realized eons ago that i could do that for years much like my taming and not once ever earn enough points to get anything.... I like my trash points better... I actually USE those and it's not YEARS before I have enough to do anything with them.

I know that the change was made so that turn in point items would be less likely to be turned in more than once, and I can understand that. However, the timing is a bit confusing as the rate was dropped through the floor after spring cleaning, after other changes to spring cleaning point reclaimation, and even after the great IDOC fall of 2012. It seems we have patched tho leak not only after the boat left the dock but after it has been comfortably resting on the ocean floor!

Now, I do not mean to say that a turndown was not needed, but I am confident the turndown was a bit too much IMHO. Shouldn't be too hard to turn back up a tad.

This is par for the course for almost everything new introduced in UO. Just look at the Shame loot... it was great, maybe a bit overpowered, then got way over-nerfed. How many months did it take to get bumped back up?

Dear O'Brian
While I do grant you your intitled to dispose of your trash how you wish to, but might I point out one tad thing that might soften your opinion.
In my artie runs down in the trash area I have found cloth, wood, ingots, regs, bods, gems, armor, weapons, jewlery, stone work, furnature, statues, tools, rocks, clothing, seeds. plants, odd and ends players dont want but that I being a feluccian have a use for. Many a day I have gone down there to see if the items are up to steal and found the ground littered with barbed items someone had tailored up for gains or for getting high mods on and trashed the rest. Sir I take them home to my tailor to unravel and reuse that barbed leather for my own bods..... One mans trash is another mans treasure. I can say with utmost certinly that the dev did not create this area for things to pop up and not get picked up if needed. I for one remember the days back in 97 where the only way a young player got anything was from the "trash" left at the banks on the ground. Many a day young scurried around collecting bags and things sellable to the npc's to help them get along for training costs. I have collected the seeds, and plants for clippings... unraveled armor and jewelry for imbueing items, talsman's for higher numbers for my crafters, and mele. I have recovered stone furniture deeds of colored stone saving me time and trouble for decoing, I am not saying there has not been a rare find there... I have found a few goodies. I didnt get many valentines boxes but the trash area provided me with quite a few a great find in my book. The drop rate went from quite a bit down to so few and far between that its now rare to find anything more then a 1000th of what was dropping before.

I do think the rate should go a bit higher.

If I want something redistributed, then I leave it on the floor at the bank.

Looking at the bigger picture, there is some economic benefit to deleting stuff in a game that is flooded with items and many items are still priced by supply/demand. Deleting something makes a -1 to supply in that formula.

It's the same reason why on production shards, we have to grind and jump through hoops for items, rather than it just being handed to us.

That's the same reason I think house contents should be deleted on collapse, rather than falling to the ground, but that's for another debate on another thread.

It's the same reason (I thought) trash barrels were introduced to the game and points were given for deleting.

Even in the case of giving items to new players, I ask players and guilds to moderate this. Help them, yes. But if you give them the best gear immediately, what do they have to work toward themselves?

If you don't want it, why do you care if someone else wants it?

Im finding a few things my self. What im finding mostly on Siege is the little statues you cant pick up or even hightlight mousing over them. They just stay there. Also Im noticing more of the stretched hides that you cannot walk over. They are stuck there also. Any way to get rid of these things?

Before the publish, the Cavern wasn't functional as it was intended, but NOW it's functional as intended...
so, where's the problem? :)

(And yes, I have two thiefs, and yes they're roaming the cavern, but they don't wait for hours, because there's usually not really great stuff to pick up...)

Then you should know that the crown and the pushmepullu spawn rather different times and days apart and if you havent a clue when the bloody things spawn you have to keep looking to find out that info as for the large pot... thats a bonus for the turn in count...
Now I have gotten the pushme on 2 of the shards abyss trash piles so far so that is the reason I am down there hunting for the elucive stuff.
I do it when I think of it. And that can be 1 to 5 times a day for a few minutes...
Now before I do agree ALOT of things were in the trash area and I did agree perhaps a small ajustment.
Only thing is the ajustment went a tad too far to the OFF side of things.

I think things that are turned in for Cleanup points should have a chance - a small chance - to spawn in the Cavern of Discarded.
